China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines move a step closer to a merger

China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) and Shanghai Airlines (Shanghai) moved a step closer to a merger on December 30 when both carriers received governmental approval to merge. China Eastern is acquiring its rival Shanghai Airlines for $1.3 billion. This approval now clears the path for Shanghai to be merged into China Eastern. The Shanghai brand will disappear during 2010.
