Hurricane Ian is now Category 3, winds 120 MPH, targeting the Sarasota/Bradenton – Venice area, airports closing

Hurricane Ian is now a Category 3 Hurricane. It is currently centered north of the western tip of Cuba. It will slowly grow stronger and head towards Florida and later Georgia.

The forecast track has shifted a bit more to the east.

Airports on the west coast of Florida will be closing as high winds and heavy rains approach the area. Separately we are keeping track of the status of all major commercial airports in Florida.

1100 (11 am) update: The forecast track has shifted a bit to the east and south. The new most-likely landfall area is around Venice, FL (south of Sarasota).

1400 (2 pm) September 27, 2022 update:

Hurricane Ian continues to build in size and wind speeds. Top winds are now 120 MPH around the eyewall. The storm continues to head NNE with a prospective landfall around Venice, FL (between SRQ and PGD).

St. Petersburg/Clearwater International (PIE) has already announced it will close at 1300 (1 pm) today.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) will suspend operations today at 1700 (5 pm).

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) is expected to close later today.

The airport issued this statement:

The airport will close prior to and during the storm event, based on the last carrier flight out of SRQ. We will provide an update when the airport terminal plans to close and reopen.

Punta Gorda (PGD) is seeing their last departures midday today. The airport made this announcement:

Punta Gorda Airport and its runways will remain open as long as conditions are safe.  However, if winds are sustained at ~45 MPH, aircraft operations and tower operations will cease, and we continue to follow recommendations from Charlotte County Emergency Management.

PASSENGERS 

  • PGD is not responsible for notifying passengers of Allegiant’s flight changes.
  • If you have an upcoming flight, check your email for updates from Allegiant.
  • Visit Allegiant Travel Alerts page or email hurricane.help@allegiantair.com.
  • Allegiant has cancelled the inbound flight for Tuesday, 9/27/22, and cancelled all flights for both Wednesday, 9/28/22, and Thursday, 9/29/22.
  • All Allegiant aircraft will be repositioned out of PGD by no later than 2 p.m. Tuesday, 9/27/22.

Fort Myers International Airport (RSW) is currently open and monitoring the storm.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is currently open and will close at 10:30 am Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

The airport issued these statements:

All flights to Key West have been cancelled for today.

Miami International Airport (MIA) remains open although encountering heavy rain. Cancellations are left to the airlines.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) remains open and continues to monitor the storm.

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) remains open and is monitoring the storm.
