WestJet operates its inaugural flight from Calgary to Paris

WestJet made this announcement:

With the departure of flight 10, WestJet on May 17 became the only airline to operate a nonstop route between Paris and Calgary.

The airline’s newest route, along with its codeshare partnership with Air France, provides historic new access between Western Canada and Europe. Canadian business and leisure travellers now can fly to and from 11 cities in greater Europe including Rome, Venice, Athens and Lisbon through WestJet’s Air France codeshare partnership from Paris. This flight is the second of three 787 Dreamliner inaugurals that are central to WestJet’s global strategy and selection of Calgary as its initial Dreamliner hub.

All flights between Calgary and Paris are operated on WestJet’s newest aircraft, the 320-seat, 787-9 Dreamliner.

Star Alliance unveils a refurbished lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle

Star Alliance has officially completed the refurbishment of its lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport. The 980 square metre facility offers seating for more than 220 guests and features stylish elements inspired by Parisian design and architecture.

The lounge is available to First and Business Class customers as well as Star Alliance Gold members travelling from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport – Terminal 1 on the following Star Alliance member airlines: Aegean, Air China, ANA, Asiana, EGYPTAIR, Eva Air, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Christian Dräger, Star Alliance VP Customer Experience, commented: “The newly renovated Star Alliance Lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle ties in seamlessly in our strategy of making the customer journey better. We are delighted to be able to offer our guests travelling from or transiting through Paris now with an unparalleled hospitality experience in a well equipped environment, where they can sit back, relax and enjoy their journey.”

The lounge, which was first opened in 2008, is located behind passport control at the highest point of the terminal building – levels 10 and 11 – and provides a panoramic view of the airport from the upper floor. Open daily from 05.30am to 10.00pm depending on the flight schedule, the refurbished lounge offers a range of facilities catering to the diverseneeds of today’s frequent travellers. A particulary striking feature is the landscaped garden, which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful outdoor area reminiscent of the green spaces of Paris before their flight.

The lounge also offers an exclusive zone for customers travelling in First Class on Air China, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways operated flights.

Customers are offered a wide range of complimentary drinks and can choose from a selection of international hot and cold menus featuring some typically French delights.

Comfortable and quiet work spaces are located on both levels and complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the lounge. Specific attention was paid to a significant increase of power sockets to make sure guest can stay connected at all times. Shower facilities, state-of-the-art television screens and a wide selection of international newspapers and magazines round off the service.

The lounge at Charles de Gaulle Airport, Terminal 1 is among seven other Star Alliance branded lounges, which are located at Amsterdam (AMS), Buenos Aires (EZE), Los Angeles (LAX), Nagoya (NGO), Rio de Janeiro (GIG) Rome (FCO) and Sao Paulo (GRU).

In total, 21 Star Alliance member carriers operate from Paris – CDG, offering 142 daily flights to 41 destinations in 25 countries: Aegean, Air Canada, Air India, Eva Air, Air China, Ethiopian Airlines, Adria, Lufthansa, Lot Polish Airlines, Swiss, Egyptair, All Nippon Airways, Austrian, Croatia Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airlines, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Cobalt is coming to Paris CDG and Birmingham

Cobalt Aero is adding two new routes for the winter season. The Cypriot carrier will add the Larnaca – Paris (CDG) route on December 4, 2016 and Larnaca – Birmingham on December 10, 2016.

Air France to restore two long-range routes next summer

Air France (Paris) will be enhancing its flight schedule for summer 2016 with two additional routes. Starting in June 2016, Air France will begin service from New York (JFK) to Paris-Orly, in addition to the four daily frequencies to Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Beginning in April 2016, Air France will operate three weekly flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport.

The daily New York-JFK to Paris-Orly service will be operated by Boeing 777-200 aircraft, equipped with 309 seats – 35 in Business, 24 in Premium Economy and 250 in Economy.

This route is part of the transatlantic joint venture with Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) and offers customers the possibility of arriving at Paris’ second busiest airport. It also enables passengers to easily connect with Air France’s domestic network on arrival at Paris-Orly.

AF37: Leaves New York-JFK at 18:05, arrives at Paris-Orly at 7:05 the following day;
AF32: Leaves Paris-Orly at 11:00, arrives at New York-JFK at 13:10.

Air France is supporting the resumption of commercial exchange with Iran and will serve Tehran from Paris-Charles de Gaulle three times a week (on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) starting in April 2016.

AF738: Leaves Paris-Charles de Gaulle at 10:30, arrives in Tehran at 18:40;
AF755: Leaves Tehran at 7:15, arrives at Paris-Charles de Gaulle at 10:55.

Background of the New York – Paris Route

The route was launched on July 1, 1946, by Douglas DC-4. The flight lasted 23 hours 45 minutes and carried 33 passengers on board.

In 1960, Air France served New York from Paris-Orly by Boeing 707 in 8 hours 15 minutes.

In 1970, JFK airport welcomed Air France’s Boeing 747-100, then the Concorde (1977), a romance that lasted more than 25 years. In 2009, New York was the first to welcome the Airbus A380.

Background of the Paris – Tehran Route

On April 29, 1946, Air France launched a scheduled route Paris – Marseille – Tunis – Benghazi – Cairo – Beirut – Baghdad – Tehran, with a flight every two weeks.

The nonstop Paris-Tehran route was suspended in October 2008.

Air China to start Chengdu – Paris flights

Air China (Beijing) will start Chengdu-Paris nonstop service from December 12, 2015, which will make Paris the fifth European destination Air China serves from Chengdu after Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Moscow, and enable passengers from Chengdu to arrive in Paris within just around 11 hours.

The flights, CA457/8, are operated four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The outbound flight departs from Chengdu at 01:30 and arrives in Paris at 06:20. The return flight departs from Paris at 12:15 and arrives in Beijing at 06:00 the second day. The flights are to be operated with Airbus A330-200.

Air France to release a new round of cuts after failing to reach an agreement with its pilots

Air France (Paris) plans to announce a new round of cuts after failing to reach a new agreement with its pilots according to the Wall Street Journal. The airline was seeking to find cost savings of $190 million annually for the next three years but the pilots refused to fly more hours for the same pay.

Cargolux celebrates 45 years of flying with a “You name it, we fly it” logo jet on newly-delivered Boeing 747-8R7F LX-VCM

Cargolux Airlines International (Luxembourg) on September 28 took delivery of brand new Boeing 747-8R7F LX-VCM (msn 61169). The new delivery was flown to Luxembourg (above) and is in service between Luxembourg and Los Angeles via Prestwick.

The new Jumbo freighter is painted in a whimsical “You name it, we fly it” special livery created by Belgian cartoonist Philippe Cruyt. The logo jet is helping Cargolux celebrate 45 years of flying. The logo jet displays some of the odd things the airline has flown in its history.

Cargolux Airlines, Europe’s largest all-cargo airline, celebrates its 45th anniversary with a special aircraft livery, created by Belgian cartoonist Philippe Cruyt, that was applied to its 13th 747-8 freighter delivered. The aircraft, LX-VCM, named ‘City of Redange-sur-Attert’, was handed over at Boeing’s Seattle plant on September 28 and arrived in Luxembourg on September 29 with a full load of cargo.

History

Over the last 45 years, Cargolux has grown to become Europe’s largest all-cargo airline with 828,658 ton of cargo flown in 2014 and a fleet of 25 747 freighters.

On March 4, 1970, Luxair, Loftleiðir, Salén and some private interests founded Cargolux and started operations from the newly established home base at Luxembourg airport with a handful of Canadair CL-44 freighters. The young carrier’s first flight on 10 March 1970 was routed Luxembourg – Stockholm – New York and carried a cargo of strawberries and iceberg lettuce.

The airline was created to operate all-cargo ad hoc and sub-charter flights and the first years of operation proved that there was a need for the type of service that Cargolux was offering to its customers.

The CL‑44s soon gave way to bigger DC-8 freighters (above) and, in later years, Cargolux introduced the wide-body Boeing 747 freighter into its fleet, amidst much skepticism in Luxembourg and within the industry. However, the success of the operation eventually proved critics wrong. In later years, Cargolux became the first operator and launch customer of the 747-400F and the 747-8F. With more than 85 offices in over 50 countries, Cargolux today flies to over 70 destinations worldwide and employs over 1,700 people.

Selected Milestones

1970: Cargolux Airlines International is founded by Luxair, Loftleiðir Icelandic, the Salén Shipping Group and private Luxembourg interests.

1974: The maintenance division of Loftleiðir Icelandic is integrated into Cargolux, whose staff increased from 80 to 180 over night.

1978: The final CL-44 is phased out. Cargolux now operates an all-jet fleet.

1979: Boeing delivers Cargolux’s first Boeing 747-200F, the second one arrives a year later.

1983: Cargolux’s CHAMP (Cargo Handling And Management Planning) computer system is introduced.

1984: The last DC-8 freighter is sold, while a third 747-200F is added to the fleet in 1986.

1988: Cargolux ranks among the 15 largest cargo carriers in the world, measured in freight tonne kilometers flown.

1990: Cargolux celebrates its 20th anniversary with an order for three new Boeing 747-400 freighters.

1993: With the delivery of the first two Boeing 747-400 freighters, Cargolux becomes the first airline in the world to operate this state-of-the-art aircraft.

1995: Cargolux celebrates its 25th anniversary. The fleet of modern 747-400 freighters is steadily expanded over the coming years; the 16th and last unit is handed over in 2008.

2005: Cargolux and Boeing announce the development of a new, advanced version of the 747 freighter, later to become the 747-8 series. Cargolux is a launch customer for this new 747 type with an initial order for 10 aircraft. The company later orders five more 747-8Fs.

2009: The Cargolux Maintenance Division moves into its new maintenance hangar that offers modern facilities and space for two 747/A380-sized aircraft. Cargolux enters into a strategic partnership in Italy to create Cargolux Italia for intercontinental all-cargo services from Milan’s Malpensa airport.

2011: Qatar Airways takes a 35% equity interest in Cargolux, but decided in November 2012 to sell its stake. The State of Luxembourg acquires these shares on an interim basis. Some six years after signing the initial order, Cargolux is taking delivery of its first two Boeing 747‑8 freighters on 19 and 21 September.

2014: Cargolux achieves a number of crucial goals, including the conclusion of a commercial cooperation agreement with HNCA, who acquire 35% of the Cargolux shares and the successful introduction of services to and from Cargolux’s new hub in China, Zhengzhou.

2015: Cargolux celebrates its 45th anniversary. The airline operates the largest fleet in its history and routinely records one of the highest daily aircraft utilization rates in the industry. Cargolux now operates seven weekly frequencies between Luxembourg and Zhengzhou and introduces its first dedicated transpacific service between Zhengzhou and Chicago.

With the acceptance of 747-8F LX-VCM, Cargolux operates one of the youngest and most efficient freighter fleets in the industry.
