Garuda Indonesia (Jakarta) is vowing to hire only local national pilots in the future according to this article by the Jakarta Globe. The airline is also freezing the compensation paid for foreign pilots. Foreign pilots make more money than the local pilots within Garuda.
The company agreed with the Garuda Pilot Association to not extend the contracts of foreign pilots. In addition, pilots will now be able to retire at age 56 rather than 60. In July 2011, about 650 local pilots from the Garuda Pilots Union (APG) launched a 24-hour strike over wage inequality between Indonesian and foreign pilots.
