Condor celebrates the end of the Boeing era

Condor Airlines will bid farewell to its last Boeing 757-300 in November, marking the end of the Boeing era at Condor.

To conclude the day on the return flight to Frankfurt, the worldโ€™s โ€œhighest inflight party” will be held, complete with a live DJ turning the cabin into one one the most extraordinary dance floors in the world, a euphoric and unforgettable celebration in the skies.

โ€œBy bidding farewell to the Boeing 757, an era at Condor comes to an end,โ€ said Christian Schmitt, COO of Condor. โ€œAt the same time, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Condor with a more modern, efficient, and more sustainable Airbus fleet. Condor has also evolved beyond just a leisure airline, offering a more competitive, best-in-class inflight product along with an expanded route network. Thus, our B757 farewell flight truly combines the nostalgia of the past with a joyful look into the future, symbolized by one of our newest city destinations, Vienna.โ€

Finnair has been rated to receive the highest star rating, a Five Star Global Official Airline Rating from the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) for 2026. The airline ratings are based on certified airline passenger feedback, and passengers rated more than one million flights across nearly 600 airlines worldwide.

โ€œThis recognition holds special significance for us as it reflects the voices of our customers. It’s a testimony of our team’s commitment to making our customers’ journey better every day,โ€ says Eerika Enne, Head of Inflight customer experience at Finnair.

This marks the fourth consecutive year Finnair has received the Five Star Global Official Airline Rating based on neutral, third-party passenger feedback. APEX is a network of the world’s leading airlines, suppliers, and related companies.

โ€œIโ€™m proud of the work our team has accomplished โ€“ and continues to pursue โ€“ to ensure this goal is met in the future as well. We sincerely thank our customers for this acknowledgement and for choosing Finnair,โ€ Enne continues.

Understanding customer needs is at the core of Finnairโ€™s approach, and focus areas include operational reliability, which was 99.3 % in August 2025, and a seamless customer journey from digital channels and customer care to the inflight experience and cabin design. Finnair has recently renewed the cabins of all its long-haul aircraft, opened a new, larger lounge on the Schengen side of Helsinki Airport, and is currently renewing the cabins of its Embraer aircraft.

This is the third consecutive year SAS has received this honor. In addition, SAS was awarded the Frequent Traveler Peopleโ€™s Award for Best Airline Loyalty Credit Card EMEA at the FT Awards.

These achievements highlight SASโ€™ strong commitment to delivering excellence both in the air and through its loyalty program. Being chosen directly by frequent travelers worldwide underscores the strength of SASโ€™ EuroBonus program and the value it provides to members. This recognition validates that travelers truly appreciate the benefits, ease of use, and features of the SAS Amex Elite loyalty credit card. It also highlights the trust and appreciation SAS enjoys among its most loyal customers in the EMEA region

โ€œThe recognitions reflect SASโ€™ dedication to delivering outstanding travel experiences and putting passengers first,โ€ says Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS. โ€œBecause both awards are driven by our customersโ€™ voices, they are especially meaningful to us and a true honor. Being placed among the top 7% of airlines worldwide is also a testament to the hard work of our employees. We are proud of this achievement and remain committed to continually enhancing the travel experience for our customersโ€

Based on nearly one million passenger reviews of 600 airlines worldwide, the APEX recognition places SAS among the top 7% of airlines rated globally. Over 3.1 million loyalty program members from 184 countries cast their votes in FT Awards this year.

Air Niugini takes delivery of its first Airbus A220

Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, has taken delivery of its first A220-300 aircraft, on lease from Azorra. The airline becomes the 25th global operator of the A220, which is now flying with carriers on five continents.

The aircraft, dubbed “People’s Balus”, departed the Airbus Final Assembly Line in Mirabel for a delivery flight to Port Moresby, with scheduled stops in Vancouver, Honolulu and Fiji. The delivery represents a significant milestone in Air Niuginiโ€™s fleet modernisation programme, with  eight A220-100s on direct order with Airbus and three A220-300s being leased from Azorra.

The aircraftโ€™s special livery marks the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of Papua New Guinea. The intricate design was brought to life by a dedicated Airbus team of 120 painters who worked to apply 11 distinct colours using a special airbrushing technique.

This delivery highlights the A220โ€™s strong  position in its segment, combining the longest range (6,700km) with the lowest fuel consumption in its class, – 25% less than previous-generation aircraft. The A220-100, which serves the 100-135 seat market, is a crucial component of this modern airliner family, while the larger A220-300 is tailored for the 120-160 seat segment. This Air Niugini A220-300 is configured to accommodate a total of 138 passengers, a testament to its flexibility and suitability for the carrier’s network.

The A220 is poised to become the centrepiece of the airline’s regional and international fleet, providing a new level of operational efficiency and passenger comfort. Its unmatched efficiency, coupled with a spacious cabin and the range to connect various destinations, positions it as an exemplary fit for the carrier’s network and its overarching objectives for long-term growth.

The airframe integrates 40% advanced materials, resulting in a lighter-weight aircraft. The A220 also incorporates optimised aerodynamics with a newly designed nose and tail cone, both of which contribute to reducing drag. In fact, the A220 has the smallest fuselage wetted area -the surface directly in contact with the air- in its class.

The A220 is powered by Pratt & Whitneyโ€™s latest-generation GTFโ„ข engines, offering a 25% reduction in carbon emissions per seat compared with previous-generation aircraft. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a target for all aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

As of the end of August 2025, Airbus has secured more than 940 orders for the A220 from over 30 customers, and has delivered over 440 aircraft. The A220 is already flying on more than 1,800 routes to more than 480 destinations worldwide, confirming its leading position in the small single-aisle market.

WestJet and CAE sign contract to bring world-class aviation professional training facility to Calgary

Ongoing education and talent development to meet future demand of expanding aviation hub

CALGARY, AB, Sept. 10, 2025 /CNW/ – WestJet and CAE announced today the signing of a 15-year training agreement under which CAE will establish the Alberta Training Centre of Excellence (the Centre) for Aviation and Aerospaceโ€”a cutting-edge aviation training facility in Calgary, subject to customary contingencies. Slated to open in 2028, the 126,000 square foot facility will house eight full-flight simulators, with capacity for expansion, alongside cabin trainers and state of the art digital learning tools. WestJet will be the Centre’s primary commercial airline customer and be the first to schedule initial and recurrent training for pilots and cabin crew on Boeing 737MAX, 737NG, 787 Dreamliner, and De Havilland Dash 8-400 (Q400) aircraft.  In partnership with Mount Royal University (MRU), the facility will be the first of its kind in Canada to combine state-of-the-art training equipment with collaborative research and development initiatives.

WestJet logo (CNW Group/WESTJET, an Alberta Partnership)

“WestJet’s commitment to being the first commercial airline customer at the Alberta Training Centre of Excellence is testament to our investment in our current and future WestJetters and in Calgary as an aviation hub,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, Chief Executive Officer of the WestJet Group. “This 15-year contract is a significant commitment that will ensure our people receive the highest standard of training for years to come, and we’re very pleased to join forces with CAE, a global leader in aviation training and fellow Canadian company, to bring this project to life.”

“Today marks a proud moment for CAE and for Canadian aviation,” said Matthew Bromberg, CAE’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The Alberta Training Centre of Excellence represents what’s possible when industry, academia, and government come together with a shared vision for innovation, safety, and workforce development. As global demand for aviation professionals accelerates, this centre positions Canada to remain at the forefront of training excellence. I am grateful to our partners for their trust and collaboration in shaping the future of aviation.”

“We’re honoured to take our longstanding partnership with WestJet to new heights and thank them for their continued trust and confidence,” said Michel Azar-Hmouda, CAE Division President, Commercial Aviation. “The Alberta Training Centre of Excellence marks a major milestone in CAE’s growth in Western Canada and underscores our commitment to being where our customers need us most. This achievement is also a testament to the collaboration and support of our government and industry partners, whose contributions helped bring this vision to life. We look forward to welcoming pilots and cabin crew to this state-of-the-art facility, proudly supporting these professionals for the moments that matter.”

A centerpiece of Calgary’s aviation hub

This initiative marks CAE’s expansion into Western Canada and anchors Calgary as a strategic hub for aviation workforce development. The high-quality training environment will support WestJet’s growing workforce, as well as personnel from other carriers, and will also serve the next generation of commercial aviators from Mount Royal University (MRU).

The facility is also expected to generate new jobs in construction, education and training, and will support both WestJet and CAE’s commitment to safety and operational excellence while driving economic opportunity and global connectivity for travel, trade and commerce.

Construction will begin later this year, with training operations and ongoing research and development initiatives launching upon completion in 2028.

Meeting the demand for aviation talent

WestJet’s long-term expansion strategy depends on a robust talent pipeline, and MRU’s collaboration with WestJet at the Alberta Training Centre of Excellence will expose prospective professionals to commercial aviation through an Airline Transition Program (ATP) to be launched soon. The program will combine specialty training for MRU aviation students from WestJet with allocated simulator training time at the facility.

CAE will lead the design, development, and ongoing operation of the Centre, with MRU taking a leading role as the primary post-secondary collaborator by contributing academic research expertise and supporting mentorship and career-integrated student learning opportunities in partnership with both CAE and WestJet.

The agreement to develop the Centre of Excellence builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between WestJet and the Government of Alberta, signed in 2022, to drive economic recovery and growth through the aerospace, aviation and logistics sectors in the province.

Government of Alberta โ€“ “The Training Centre of Excellence is about more than supporting one project. It is about securing Alberta’s place as a leader in aviation for decades to come.
