Customers may book and fly with confidence
MONTRรAL, Aug. 19, 2025 /CNW/ – Air Canada said it will gradually restart its operations today after reaching a mediated agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) through a process overseen by a mutually agreed-to mediator, William Kaplan. Mediation discussions were begun on the basis that the union commit to have the airline’s 10,000 flight attendants immediately return to work, allowing the airline to resume the operations of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which have been grounded since August 16.
Air Canada (CNW Group/Air Canada)
“The suspension of our service is extremely difficult for our customers. We deeply regret and apologize for the impact on them of this labour disruption. Our priority now is to get them moving as quickly as possible. Restarting a major carrier like Air Canada is a complex undertaking. Full restoration may require a week or more, so we ask for our customers’ patience and understanding over the coming days. I assure them that everyone at Air Canada is doing everything possible to enable them to travel soon,” said Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.
The first flights are scheduled for the evening of August 19, but customers are advised that the airline’s return to full, regular service may require seven-to-ten days as aircraft and crew are out of position. During this process, some flights will be cancelled over the next seven to ten days until the schedule is stabilized.
Only customers with confirmed bookings whose flights are shown as operating should go to the airport (check your flight’s status on aircanada.com or on the Air Canada mobile app before going to the airport). Air Canada will offer options to those with cancelled flights, including obtaining a full refund or receiving a credit for future travel. The carrier will also offer to rebook customers on other airlines, although capacity is currently limited due to the peak summer travel season.
As is customary, Air Canada will not comment on the agreement until the ratification process is complete. During any ratification or under the binding arbitration process, a strike or lockout is not possible, meaning customers can plan, book and travel with Air Canada with certainty.

MONTRรAL, Aug. 18, 2025 /CNW/ – Air Canada is suspending its guidance for third quarter and full-year 2025 operating results due to the effects of the labour disruption by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the resulting suspension of all flights.
Air Canada (CNW Group/Air Canada)
On August 17, 2025, the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) directed Air Canada to resume airline operations and for all Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to resume their duties by 14:00 EDT on August 17, 2025. The CIRB further ordered that the term of the collective agreement between Air Canada and CUPE that expired on March 31, 2025, be extended to include the period beginning on April 1, 2025 and ending on the day on which the new collective agreement between the parties comes into effect. The CIRB also imposed final binding arbitration to resolve the outstanding terms of the collective agreement. The arbitration procedure would be addressed in the coming days and weeks.
Later, on August 17, 2025, CUPE illegally directed its flight attendant members to defy the direction from the CIRB to return to work resulting in Air Canada suspending its plan to resume limited flying by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge.
Given the effects of the labour disruption and related impact on operations, Air Canada is suspending its guidance for third quarter and full-year 2025 operating results provided in its July 28, 2025 news release.
Air Canada deeply regrets the impact the labour disruption has had on its customers, its stakeholders and the communities it serves.

The New Terminal One will set a new standard for design and service, aspiring to obtain a Top 5 Skytrax ranking.
The New Terminal One is being built on sites now occupied by Terminal 1 and the former Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, where it will anchor JFK’s south side. Construction is taking place in phases with full completion in 2030. The first phase, including the new arrivals and departures halls and first set of 14 new gates, is expected to open in 2026. At completion in 2030, the New Terminal One, with a total of 23 gates, will be 2.6 million square feet, making it the largest terminal at JFK and nearly the same size as LaGuardia Airport’s two new terminals combined.

Board orders union and its officers to immediately cease all activities that declare or authorize an unlawful strike
Individual flight attendants directed to resume their duties
CUPE leadership told to publicly call halt to unlawful activity
MONTREAL, Aug. 18, 2025 /CNW/ – Air Canada today said the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has declared ongoing strike activity by the company’s 10,000 flight attendants is illegal and has ordered the leadership of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to direct its members to return to work.
Air Canada (CNW Group/Air Canada)
Following a hearing on August 17, the CIRB declared that CUPE’s strike is unlawful. It ordered the union leadership, which authorized the strike, to immediately tell its members to end the work stoppage. It also directed individual members of the union to cease all unlawful activities and return to work. In its ruling the board declared:
The union and its officers are ordered to immediately cease all activities that declare or authorize an unlawful strike of its members and to direct the members of the bargaining unit to resume the performance of their duties;
The members of the union’s bargaining unit are directed to resume the performance of their duties immediately and to refrain from engaging in unlawful strike activities;
The union and its officers shall provide written public notice, either through its website or other means, to all members by 12:00 pm EDT on August 18, 2025, that it has revoked its declaration or authorization of strike activities and that all members are required to resume the performance of their duties.
Air Canada’s intended restart of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which have been grounded since August 16 by CUPE’s labour disruption, was prevented on August 17 by the CUPE leadership’s unlawful strike activities. The airline now estimates 500,000 customers’ flights have been cancelled as a result. Air Canada regrets this impact on its customers and is fully committed to returning to service as soon as possible. Customers can find more information about their future flights and travel options at www.aircanada.com

National Airlines (1st) Boeing 727-35 N4614 (msn 18815) MIA (Jacques Guillem Collection). Image: 966039.
National Airlines possessed one of the more striking and expessive liveries of the late 1960’s and 1970’s. The orange and yellow stripes and “Sun King” logo (in my opinion one of the best ever designed for an airline) made it crystal clear that NAL was very much “Florida’s Own Airline,” based in Miami for many years before arch-competitor Eastern moved its corporate headquarters there in 1975. Late in 1971 National launched its famous (or, for some, infamous) “Fly Me” advertising campaign which included virtually every NAL aircraft receiving a female name painted somewhere near their jet’s forward passenger loading doors. Boeing 727-25 “N4614” was no exception, being christened “Ann.” This practice continued until 1977 when “Fly Me” was finally replaced by “Watch us Shine” as the offical corporate slogan and by 1979 most, if not all, of the names had been removed. This photograph depicts Ann at Miami, possibly undergoing some line maintenance, and looking like she has just received a repaint. Time is unknown, but it is quite possible this image dates to the period shortly after “Fly Me” ads began appearing in October of 1971. N4614 continued to fly National’s domestic routes until the airline’s ill-fated merger with Pan American in January of 1980. At that time the Boeing trijet received a new name: “Clipper Reporter.” After passing through periods of ownership by several other operators the 727 was reported as being scrapped in Ottawa, Ontario in 1995.

JetBlue will also add a second Saturday flight to Grand Cayman (GCM) and Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI) during the season.
