Randy’s Journal: A Boeing Blog – 777 Soars past 2,000 orders

Boeing has released this article by Randy Tinseth:

Happy New Year, everyone. If you are an aviation fan like me, 2019 promises to be another exciting year with the rollout and first flight of the new Boeing 777X, and the start of production of the largest and most efficient 737 MAX, the MAX 10. There will be other major events, Iโ€™m sure, and they will build on what was a very productive 2018 for us at Boeing.

On Tuesday, January 8, we will share our full-year orders and deliveries results. While all of the numbers are being checked and double checked, I can confirm an exciting milestone, one that Iโ€™ve been watching for the past month.

The amazing 777 โ€“ already the best-selling widebody jet of all time โ€“ has accomplished something no other widebody airplane has ever done: Surpass 2,000 net orders.

In December, we won 17 net orders for the 777 from BOC Aviation and two unidentified customers, bringing the program to 2,013 orders since its launch. The total includes popular models such as the 777-300ER (Extended Range) passenger jet, the long-range 777 Freighter, and the new 777X.

Beyond the overall sales total, the 777โ€™s order performance in 2018 โ€“ and in recent years โ€“ really shows the familyโ€™s incredible staying power as the leader in the long-haul market. After clinching 40 net orders in 2017, the 777 won 51 net orders in 2018 and 209 orders over the past five years.

As of the end of November, the 777 has won more orders in 2018 than each Airbus widebody jet: the A350, A330 and A380. I donโ€™t know what the final tally is for those programs, but it would fit a trend: Over the past decade, the 777-300ER has outsold the airplane in its class โ€“ the A350-1000 โ€“ by more than 3 to 1, while the 777 family has outsold the A350-1000 by more than 5 to 1.

The fact that the 777 is still climbing should come as no surprise. The 777 is a powerful platform that continues to deliver unmatched passenger and cargo capabilities.

I still remember the 777-200LR (Longer Range) that took me and dozens of others on the record-breaking flight in 2005 from Hong Kong to London (flying eastbound). That flight โ€“ 22 hours and 22 minutes โ€“ demonstrated the 777 modelโ€™s amazing ability to connect virtually any two cities around the globe.

Hong Kong to London, 2005

More than a decade later, the 777โ€™s range continues to carry passengers directly where they want to go in world-class comfort. Consider this: Of the 20 longest commercial routes today, 10 off them are still flown by a Boeing 777. (By the way, five more of them are onboard a 787 Dreamliner). And 60 percent of all trans-Pacific capacity is still made possible by 777s. (Note: a rapidly-growing 20% is carried by 787s).

Simply put, the 777 continues to please passengers while making money for leading carriers around the world, fueling the steady stream of orders.

And the 777 Freighter has also been a big driving force behind our 2018 sales success as we finalized orders with DHL Express, FedEx Express, ANA Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, Turkish Cargo and Qatar Airways, to name more than a few.

As the largest and longest-range twin-engine cargo airplane in the world, the 777 Freighter simply has no competitor with its ability to fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) and a payload of 112 tons (102 metric tonnes or 102,000 kg).

The staying power of the 777 is providing a good transition to the new 777X, which will further extend the familyโ€™s performance, economics and range capability. Over the next few months, we will have more opportunities to go deeper into the special characteristics of the 777X โ€“ including an all-new high-span composite wing, its incredible range and 12-percent fuel efficiency advantage over its competition.

Whether itโ€™s the current 777-300ER and 777 Freighter or the future 777X, I am excited to see how far this airplane family can goโ€ฆ

Belugas on board โ€“ SEALIFE Trust and Cargolux join forces for an epic journey to the worldโ€™s first open water whale sanctuary

Cargolux becomes the official transport partner working with SEA LIFE Trust and project partner, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), to help move two beluga whales, Little Grey and Little White, 6,000 miles from China to Iceland in Spring 2019.

A specially branded plane has been unveiled which features Little Grey and Little White on a Boeing 747-400ERF freighter (LX-ECV). The plane will help transport the two whales along with a care team to the worldโ€™s first open water sanctuary for beluga whales.

The SEA LIFE TRUST on January 7, 2019 announced that Europeโ€™s leading all-cargo airline Cargolux will sponsor the flight to help relocate Little Grey and Little White the beluga whales 6,000 miles from China to Iceland in spring 2019.

The complex journey will see the two belugas move from Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai, China, via land, air and eventually by sea to the large sanctuary in a natural bay at Heimaey, one of the Westman Islands, located off the southern coast of Iceland.

The secluded bay will be the worldโ€™s first open water sanctuary for beluga whales in a ground-breaking global marine welfare project. The bay, which measures up to 32,000 sqm with a depth of up to 10m has been chosen to provide a more natural sub-Arctic environment and wild habitat for these amazing whales to call home.

Andy Bool, Head of SEA LIFE Trust, said: โ€œThis is a complex but truly inspiring project to be working on and we are extremely grateful to Cargolux for their generosity in becoming our official transport partner and helping us move Little White and Little Grey to their new, more natural home. Cargolux has years of experience working on many of the most logistically intricate projects and their teams have been working with our animal care team, veterinarians and marine experts to ensure we provide the very best journey for Little Grey and Little White.โ€

Bool continues: โ€œWe have also been working with Little Grey and Little White for months preparing them for the journey which includes specialist equipment and bespoke stretchers as well as a whole host of leading animal experts who will work around-the-clock as the whales make the journey to their new home.โ€

Richard Forson, Cargolux President and Chief Executive Officer added: โ€œCargolux is honoured to have been entrusted with two such incredible whales. This is a ground-breaking project and one which our animal transport experts are proud to be part of. We are meticulously preparing for the move this spring to ensure a seamless journey for Little Grey and Little White.โ€

This undertaking is a natural follow-up to the increasing amount of measures that the airline has taken to raise awareness about the necessity to promote conservation, preserve the environment, and fight illegal animal trade. Cargolux has a history of engagement for environmental consciousness, and animal welfare in particular. As a signatory of the UN Global Compact and a company committed to the UNโ€™s Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals, conservation and sustainable development rank high on Cargoluxโ€™s list of priorities. Partnerships such as this one are of prime importance for the airline and reflect its engagement and that of its employees.

How will Little Grey and Little White travel from China to Iceland?

The complex logistical challenge of transporting two beluga whales by air, land and sea is being carefully planned by a team of global experts with experience in transporting marine mammals. The 6,000-miles journey will take around 24 hours to complete – from the time Little Grey and Little White leave Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai and arrive at the sanctuary on Heimaey Island.

  1. The journey will begin at Changfeng Ocean World in Shanghai. Each beluga will be individually lifted onto specially designed stretchers measured to their physical requirements and carefully placed into specially built transportation boxes before they are lifted out of the aquarium by crane and placed carefully into two lorries
  2. Little Grey and Little White will then travel by road, from Changfeng Ocean World to Pu Dong International airport, where a specially chartered cargo plane will be waiting on the runway to fly them to Keflavik Airport in Iceland
  3. Following the flight, Little Grey and Little White will be transferred on to two individual lorries on a two hour drive from the airport to the ferry port and then transported by ferry from the airport to Heimaey, a crossing that takes around 30 minutes
  4. Once the ferry has docked on Heimaey Island, the lorries will drive a short distance to the town of Vestmannaeyjar where Little Grey and Little White will be transferred to the beluga sanctuary landside facility and placed into a special care pool so they can be assessed following their journey.

Project overview:

Created in partnership with WDC, the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary is one of the biggest developments in captive whale and dolphin care and protection in decades and the first of its kind to be created for cetaceans.

Cathy Williamson, WDC policy manager, concluded: โ€œWhales and dolphins are highly intelligent creatures and are not suited toย being ย held in a small pool performing tricks. It is hoped that this project will help to encourage the rehabilitation of more captive whales into a more natural environment in the future, and one dayย bring an end to the use of whales and dolphinsย for human entertainment. We are hugely grateful to Cargolux for helping to make this a reality.โ€

Visitors to Heimaey will be able to learn more about Little White and Little Grey and the sanctuary in a landside visitorย centreย which will be completed in 2019. It will offer limited and discreet viewing of the whales. This will be very carefully controlled to ensure the two whales will not be disturbed in their new and very natural environment.

Backed by a donation from Merlin Entertainments and supported by the worldโ€™s largest chain of family aquariums, SEA LIFE, the sanctuary will comprise of a stunning natural sea inlet in Klettsvik Bay and include a landside care facility and visitor centre.

JetBlue reflects on 15 years of operations in Boston

Since its arrival in Boston in 2004, JetBlue Airways has played an instrumental role in transforming air travel for the Commonwealth and customers traveling through Boston Logan International Airport. JetBlue, which today celebrates its 15th anniversary of operations at Logan, has significantly grown its footprint in the market, leading the way in number of nonstop destinations served, customers carried and total daily departures.

JetBlueโ€™s Historic Growth in Boston

JetBlue first began service in Boston on January 7, 2004, with the airline operating about 4,500 flights from one gate in the first year. While every major U.S. airline had a sizable presence at the time, no single carrier was the clear market leader. With the โ€˜JetBlue effectโ€™ in action, the airline shook up the market with its low-fare approach, driving down prices and introducing a slew of new destinations for Logan travelers. Fast forward 15 years, JetBlue has become the leading carrier in Boston, with nearly 70 nonstop destinations served, more than 150 daily flights and close to 55,000 annual departures, making up 30 percent of Loganโ€™s overall traffic. JetBlue has also grown its roster of airline partners since entering Logan, offering up global destinations for customers on 20+ international carriers.

โ€œWhen we first entered Boston, JetBlue was very young. Fifteen years later, itโ€™s exciting to see how far weโ€™ve come and where weโ€™re heading,โ€ said Marty St. George, executive vice president of commercial and planning, JetBlue. โ€œBoston is our home, and weโ€™re committed to providing the low fares, award-winning service and amenities that have made JetBlue the number one choice for travel at Logan.โ€

โ€œMassport applauds JetBlue for their 15 years of offering exciting travel opportunities for the entire New England region,โ€ said John Pranckevicius, acting CEO, Massport. โ€œWe look forward to continuing our strong partnership with JetBlue while providing our business and leisure customers with even more options for travel in the future.โ€

JetBlue in the Community

JetBlue prides itself on supporting the causes, teams and places its customers and crewmembers are most passionate about. Since 2011, JetBlue crewmembers have contributed more than 48,500 hours of service to a variety of causes and nonprofits throughout New England, such as KaBOOM!, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Wings for Autismยฎ and Make-A-Wishยฎ Massachusetts and Rhode Island, among many others.

JetBlue is also the proud official airline sponsor for all four major sports teams including the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins and New England Patriots, along with the annual Boston Marathon and venues including TD Garden, The Wang Theatre, The Shubert Theatre and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Looking Ahead

JetBlue is on track to reach 200 daily departures in the coming years. Working closely with Massport, the airline continues to make investments to maintain its leadership position in its second-largest focus city. JetBlue plans to expand its footprint from 24 to 30 gates by 2021. Starting in 2020, JetBlue will also steadily replace its Embraer E190 fleet with the larger and more fuel-efficient Airbus A220, providing more seats in the market at a lower operating cost.

United Airlines’ first Boeing 787-10 begins regular service, flying coast to coast

Today, January 7, 2019, United Airlines’ first Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner began regular service as UA2418, departing from Los Angeles International Airport traveling to Newark Liberty International Airport. United is the first carrier in the world to operate all three Dreamliner models (above), including the 787-8, 787-9 and now the longest model, the 787-10.

The Dreamliner’s entry into scheduled service continues United’s comprehensive fleet plan, while providing an improved experience for customers. The aircraft is United’s first Dreamliner model delivered with the airline’s signature Polaris business class seats, and new Unitedยฎย Premium Plus seats. Boeing’s Dreamliners are known for dramatically improving the on board experience for customers with lower cabin altitude, better humidity, cleaner air, smoother ride and better sound quality. Additionally, the new Dreamliner provides better fuel efficiency than older aircraft, contributing to United’s commitment to reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2050.

As previously announced, United expects its second Dreamliner to enter service between its hubs in San Francisco and New York/Newark in February, and begin international service in March.

Ryanair UK is born with an AOC

Ryanair has made this announcement as Europe and the UK brace for Brexit:

Ryanair on January 3, 2019 confirmed that the UK CAA has issued Ryanair UK with a UK AOC, which will allow this UK airline to operate UK domestic and UK to non-EU routes in a post-Brexit environment, if necessary.

Ryanair continues to call on the UK and EU to agree a transition deal from March 31, 2019, so that any disruption to flights and British consumer summer holidays in 2019 can be avoided.

Ryanairโ€™s Juliusz Komorek said:

โ€œWe welcome the Civil Aviation Authorityโ€™s decision to grant our UK based airline, Ryanair UK, with a UK AOC, allowing Ryanair to operate UK domestic routes and UK to non-EU routes in a post-Brexit environment.

The risk of a โ€˜no dealโ€™ Brexit in March is rising, and despite our robust post-Brexit structures, including our post-Brexit plan around European ownership, we continue to call for the UK and EU to agree a transition deal from March 31, 2019, so that any disruption to flights and British consumer summer holidays in 2019 can be avoided.โ€
