Southern Air to operate three Boeing 747 freighters for MASkargo, then 777Fs

Southern Air (2nd) (Anchorage) and MASkargo (Malaysia Airlines Cargo Sdn Bhd) (Kuala Lumpur) announced that they have entered into a multi-year, multi-aircraft wet lease agreement.

Southern Air initially will provide MASkargo with three Boeing 747 Freighter aircraft along with crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI). MASkargo also has an option to lease up to five aircraft, which will provide it additional flexibility to meet its customers’ growing demand for additional lift capacity and to develop the ability to service new markets.

This new partnership provides MASkargo the opportunity to expand into our next wave of Southern Air Boeing 777 Freighter deliveries.

The Boeing 747s that Southern Air is delivering to MASkargo will showcase Southern Air’s new livery.

MASkargo (Malaysia Airlines Cargo Sdn Bhd) is the air cargo division of Malaysia Airlines and operates four Boeing 747-200Fs, two 747-400Fs and one Airbus A300-600 freighter.

Malaysia Airlines to acquire 17 Airbus A330s

Malaysia Airlines (Kuala Lumpur) has placed a firm order with Airbus for 17 A330 widebody aircraft. The contract firms up a previously announced Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for 15 A330-300 passenger aircraft, plus an additional order for two A330-200F Freighters for operation by the carrier’s subsidiary MASkargo. Deliveries of the passenger aircraft will begin in the first half of 2011, with the first freighter joining the MASkargo fleet later the same year.

Seating 283 passengers in a high comfort two class layout, the A330-300 will become the mainstay of the carrier’s medium haul passenger fleet and will be used on services to destinations across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to the Middle East. In the freight market, MASkargo will fly the aircraft on sectors of up to 3,200 nautical miles, with the capability to carry payloads of almost 70 tons.
