Southwest Airlines is coming to Newark on March 27, 2011

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has announced it will serve Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with eight daily nonstops flights, six to Chicago Midway and two to St. Louis beginning on Sunday, March 27, 2011.

This announcement is the first wave of the carrier’s new schedule at Newark International. Southwest will announce additional Newark flights to begin in 2011 before the end of the year.

In addition to the eight daily nonstop flights to and from these cities, Southwest Airlines’ new service will offer direct or connecting service to more than 45 destinations including: Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Houston, and San Diego. In August, Southwest Airlines announced its intent to serve Newark Liberty International through a lease deal with Continental Airlines contingent upon the closing of the already approved Continental and United airlines’ merger, and certain governmental approvals. With this agreement, Southwest Airlines has the right to operate up to 18 daily roundtrip flights at Newark International.

In other news, Southwest has announced pricing for its Southwest Airlines WiFi HOTSPOT service. Southwest will offer WiFi onboard its fleet at a special introductory flat rate of $5 per flight for any device or flight length. Southwest is able to offer this price point and tailor the Customer Experience with the satellite-based technology provided by Row 44. To view a video of how WiFi is installed on the Southwest fleet, visit http://www.swamedia.com. Southwest partnered with Row 44 and began testing WiFi on four aircraft in 2009. Today, Southwest has 32 WiFi-enabled planes.

Customers on a WiFi-enabled aircraft will be greeted with the newly designed WiFi HOTSPOT placard onboard the aircraft. When opening the Southwest Airlines WiFi HOTSPOT browser, Customers will be taken to a home page that houses content free of charge. Free content includes a flight tracker, games, shopping on Skymall and Home Shopping Network, and access to http://www.southwest.com.

Customers will receive an e-mail prior to their flight informing them they will be on a WiFi-enabled aircraft. Southwest plans to have 60 WiFi-enabled aircraft by year end and the entire fleet of 737-700s (346 aircraft) enabled by the end of 2012.
