American Airlines previously announced on October 30, 2017 it would close its MD-80 pilots base at St. Louis in September 2018. After that, all McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82s/83s will be based at the Dallas/Fort Worth base.

The carrier has announced it will retire a further 19 DC-9-82s/83s by the end of 2018. The remaining 26 MD-80s are expected to be retired by the end of 2019.

AA operated a peak of 362 MD-80s in 2001.

The MD-80s are being replaced by new Boeing 737-8 MAX 8 aircraft.
