American Airlines is moving ahead with its planned retirement of its last McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82s/83s (MD-82s/MD-83s) by the end of 2019.
According to Ross Feinstein and his report on social media, AA retired eight MD-80 aircraft in one day (N7547A, N424AA, N7550, N7584A, N426AA, N979TW, N555AN and N70425). The fleet is now down to 34 aircraft.

Please stop calling them DC-9-80’s…they are MD-80’s. That designation belongs as the primary…not the one in parenthesis. Gezzz.
I am sorry, you are wrong Matt. Officially they are DC-9-82 and DC-9-83 aircraft (look at the data plates on the aircraft). MD-80s are a marketing term. I include both. The original FAA type certificate also stated DC-9-82 and DC-9-83 and were originally marketed by AA as “Super 80s”. The term MD-80 came later by McDonnell Douglas. Bruce
