Delta anticipates weather-related flight cancellations despite changes to 5G roll out

Delta Air Lines is planning for the possibility of weather-related cancellations caused by the deployment of new 5G service in the vicinity of dozens of U.S. airports, starting as early as Wednesday. The FAA, which regulates airlines, has issued numerous notices that restrict flight activity near airports where this new deployment of 5G service in the C-band spectrum could cause limited interference with altitude instruments on aircraft under various weather conditions that aircraft safely operate in today. As such, Delta is taking the necessary steps to ensure safety remains the priority in compliance with FAA guidelines.

Telecom companies agreed Tuesday to limit the scope of Wednesday’s planned 5G deployment and will delay implementation around certain U.S. airports. While this is a positive development toward preventing widespread disruptions to flight operations, some flight restrictions may remain.

โ€œWe appreciate the decision to limit the rollout of this service near airports,โ€ E.V.P. and Chief of Operations John Laughter said Tuesday. โ€œWe believe industries can grow, innovate and co-exist for the benefit of consumers. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re continuing to work with the FAA, the FCC and the telecom industry to find a practical solution that will allow for the rollout of 5G technology while preserving safety and avoiding flight disruptions.โ€

Delta is committed to proactively communicating with customers whenever possible about a cancellation or delay due to low visibility weather conditions that impact a 5G-affected airport.

  • Waivers:ย Delta will issue fare-difference waivers in advance of cancellations. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of those waivers as an option to reschedule their travel to a day and time that may not be impacted.
  • Automatic Rebooking:ย If a flight is canceled, affected customers will be automatically rebooked on the next available flight. Whenever possible, Delta teams strive to cancel flights far enough in advance to notify customers before arriving at the airport.
  • Itinerary Updates:ย Delta will send updates on itinerary changes directly to a mobile device or by email. Customers need to provide their contact information during booking or via My Trips online to enable this communication.
  • Self Service:ย Customers are encouraged to download and use theย Fly Delta appย or visitย delta.comย to check their flight status and manage their rebooking with convenient self-service options.

When cancellations become necessary as a last resort, Delta works to make changes that impact the fewest customers with the shortest delays. We apologize to customers for any disruption to their travel plans. As always, Delta people are working at airports, on board and behind the scenes at the airlineโ€™s Operations and Customer Center to help our customers get where they need as safely and quickly as possible, no matter the circumstances.

Delta has joined other airlines in seeking a delay by the Federal government of the deployment of this new 5G coverage into the C-band spectrum until more protections and assurances against potential interference with aircraft radio altimeters exist. Radio altimeters are a critical piece of technology that inform many aircraft functions and gives pilots what they need to fly airplanes safely, especially during critical phases of flight.

The impact on air travel could be immediate and significant, directly impacting passenger travel and cargo shipping. โ€œThe nationโ€™s commerce will grind to a halt,โ€ the CEOs of major carriers, including Delta CEO Ed Bastian, wrote in a letter coordinated by Airlines for America to government officials, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the chair of the Federal Communications Commission.

Delta has been evaluating its aircraft systems to ascertain whether those planes are safe to fly near airports where the 5G service is being rolled out. At the same time, we are committed to remaining fully compliant with the guidance of the FAA.

“Safety is, and always has been Delta’s number one priority โ€“ without it, nothing else matters,โ€ Laughter said.

Delta reports fewer cancellations as Omicron impact diminishes, more winter weather forecast

Delta Air Lines issued this statement:

Deltaโ€™s operation stabilized over the past week, with significantly fewer disruptions to our flight schedule, most of which were attributed to winter weather.

As impacts from the Omicron variant lessen, less than 1% of our scheduled flights were canceled Wednesday across Deltaโ€™s mainline and Delta Connection operations. As of noon Thursday, just three mainline and no Delta Connection cancellations were processed for the dayโ€™s schedule.

Over the past week, about 60% of all cancellations systemwide were due to weather. One-third were attributed mainly to the effects of omicron. Over that same period, our mainline completion rate has been 99%, and 94% for Delta Connection. We are once again leading our competitors in completion reliability for the month of January.

โ€œThe stabilization that weโ€™re seeing right now is really a testament to the resilience of the Delta people,โ€ said E.V.P. and Chief Customer Experience Officer Allison Ausband. โ€œAt a time when we were anticipating the highest levels of demand that weโ€™ve seen in two years, we were also challenged by omicron and the complexity of winter weather systems in many areas of the country. But our people persevered, backed up their colleagues as they focused on their health and getting well, and stayed focused on taking care of all of our customers to get them to their destination safely and comfortably.โ€

Even as Omicron effects on our Delta family begin to slowly subside, another winter weather system is expected to cause disruptions through the MLK holiday weekend, potentially impacting our Atlanta (ATL), Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) and Northeast hubs with ice and snow.

“While the rapidly spreading omicron variant has significantly impacted staffing levels and disrupted travel across the industry, Delta’s operation has stabilized over the last week and returned to pre-holiday performance,” Bastian said.ย  “Omicron is expected to temporarily delay the demand recovery 60 days, but as we look past the peak, we are confident in a strong spring and summer travel season with significant pent-up demand for consumer and business travel.”

Revenue Environment

“The commercial strengths we spoke about last month at Capital Markets Day are evident in our December quarter results.ย  We ended December with revenues nearly 80 percent recovered to 2019 levels on strong demand and pricing during the holiday period, our premium products continued to perform well, we saw encouraging trends in business and international travel and our diverse revenue streams remained resilient,” saidย Glen Hauenstein, Delta’s president.

“The recent rise in COVID cases associated with the omicron variant is expected to impact the pace of demand recovery early in the quarter, with recovery momentum resuming from President’s Day weekend forward.ย  Factoring this in to our outlook, we expect total March quarter revenue to recover to 72 to 76% of 2019 levels, compared to 74% in the December quarter.”

Operating revenue, adjusted ofย $8.4 billionย for the December quarter 2021 improved 2 percent, orย $149 millionย from September quarter 2021.ย  Compared to the same period in 2019, operating revenue, adjusted was 74 percent restored, in line with the company’s mid-December guidance update on system capacity that was 79 percent restored compared to December quarter 2019 levels.

Compared to the September quarter 2021, system yields improved 7 percent on a system load factor decline of 2 points to 78 percent.ย  As a result, total unit revenue, adjusted improved 6 percent sequentially.

Revenue-related Highlights:

  • Domestic revenue recovery progresses on strong holiday demand:ย Domestic passenger revenue was 78 percent restored compared to December quarter 2019, a 6 point sequential improvement in the rate of recovery versus the September quarter 2021 driven by robust leisure demand, improving corporate travel and strong holiday bookings. International passenger revenue recovered to 50 percent of December quarter 2019 levels, an 8 point improvement sequentially.
  • Premium cabins continue to outperform main cabin:ย Domestic and short-haul Latin premium product revenue recovery outpaced main cabin by approximately 10 points, flat sequentially, with Domestic premium revenues 84 percent recovered compared to December quarter 2019.
  • Business demand continues to improve:ย Business travel continues to progress with domestic passenger volumes approaching 60 percent restored during the December quarter 2021. This includes both managed corporate and Small and Medium Enterprises.
  • American Express remuneration exceeded 2019 levels:ย American Express remuneration ofย $1.2 billionย in the quarter was up 11 percent compared to December quarter 2019 and up 8 points sequentially. Co-brand spend was 121 percent of December quarter 2019, driven by strong holiday retail spend and T&E spend that exceeded December quarter 2019. Co-brand card acquisitions were 86 percent recovered compared to December quarter 2019.
  • Cargo revenue achieves five consecutive quarters of positive growth:ย Cargo revenue increased toย $304 million, a 63 percent improvement compared to the December quarter 2019 and up 24 points sequentially on strong holiday demand and yields.

Cost Performance

“The Delta team executed incredibly well in 2021, delivering another profitable quarter in an environment that remains dynamic,” saidย Dan Janki, Delta’s chief financial officer.ย  “With omicron impacting our near-term outlook, we expect losses in January and February months with a return to profitability in the month of March.ย  Despite expectations for a loss in the March quarter, we remain positioned to generate a healthy profit in the June, September and December quarters, resulting in a meaningful profit in 2022.”

For 2021, total operating expense, adjusted ofย $29.2 billionย decreased 27 percent compared to full year 2019, driven by lower salaries and related benefits, fuel and volume and selling-related expense.ย  Non-fuel CASM for 2021 increased 11.4 percent versus 2019, on 29 percent lower capacity over the same period.

Total operating expense, adjusted ofย $8.1 billionย in the December quarter 2021 increased 3 percent sequentially, driven by both higher fuel and non-fuel costs from the continued restoration of the airline.

Fuel expense, adjusted ofย $1.6 billionย in the December quarter 2021 increased 4 percent, or $55ย million compared to the September quarter 2021.ย  Adjusted fuel price ofย $2.10ย per gallon was up 8 percent compared to the September quarter 2021 driven by higher market prices and partially offset by continued refinery contribution and an improvement in RINs pricing and volume obligations.ย  During the December quarter 2021, fuel efficiency, defined as gallons per 1,000 ASMs, improved 4.3 percent versus the same period in 2019 as a result of our fleet renewal efforts.ย  In addition, carbon offsets expensed during the quarter drove a 3ยข impact on fuel prices as Delta supports its commitment to carbon neutrality by pursuing high quality, verified offsets.

Non-fuel cost, adjusted ofย $6.5 billionย was up 3 percent sequentially on a 4 percent decrease in capacity.ย  This was driven primarily by people-related and seasonal costs.ย  Compared to the December quarter of 2019, non-fuel unit costs (CASM-Ex) were 8.3 percent higher, including a 1.2 point impact primarily due to omicron disruptions the last two weeks of the December quarter.

Non-operating expense for the December quarter 2021 wasย $658 millionย including equity method losses, mark-to-market losses on certain investments and losses on the extinguishment of debt.ย  Non-operating expense, adjusted wasย $175 million.

Balance Sheet, Cash and Liquidity

“During 2021, we made significant progress restoring our balance sheet, reducing gross debt byย $6 billionย and fully funding our pension plans on a PPA basis,” Janki said.ย  “Reducing debt remains a top financial priority as operating cash flow improves to support the return of our balance sheet back to investment grade metrics by 2024.”

At the end of the December quarter 2021, the company had total debt and finance lease obligations ofย $26.9 billionย with adjusted net debt ofย $20.6 billionย and a weighted average interest rate of 4.2 percent.

Operating cash flow during the December quarter 2021 wasย $555 million.ย  Free cash flow was negativeย $441 millionย for the quarter with gross capital expenditures reinvested in the business ofย $948 million.

The company’s Air Traffic Liability wasย $6.4 billionย at December quarter-end, approximately flat compared to the end of the September quarter.

Delta ended the December quarter withย $14.2 billionย in liquidity, includingย $2.9 billionย in undrawn revolver capacity.

Delta unveils custom aircraft livery to celebrate 8-year commitment as official airline of Team USA

Delta Air Lines has made its official announcement:

Delta Air Lines on Friday unveiled its custom Team USA aircraft livery honoring the global carrierโ€™s commitment to connect athletes with their dreams as the official airline of Team USA. The Team USA-inspired A330-900 celebrates Deltaโ€™s new eight-year partnership with Team USA, which runs through the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

โ€œDelta and Team USA share a deep belief that connecting the world makes us all better,โ€ said Tim Mapes, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Delta. โ€œThis one-of-a-kind livery celebrates our partnership, which has been built on shared values and the inspiring athletes of Team USA, whose indomitable spirit lies at the heart of both our โ€˜Keep Climbingโ€™ message and the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.โ€

Watch a time-lapse video of the creation of the Team USA livery.
The custom livery was designed by Shane Edwards, Deltaโ€™s Product and Experiential Design Manager, in collaboration with the airlineโ€™s in-house creative team, Window Seat. Unique Team USA design elements that are incorporated throughout the livery were developed by Carey McKay, Delta Art Director and Graphic Designer, and will also be featured in various Delta visuals, materials and platforms both in flight and on the ground.

โ€œThe team opted for a clean, classic design to promote the partnership between Team USA and Delta,โ€ Edwards said. โ€œThe Team USA logo is prominently featured, along with a blue gradient that represents the sky and ‘rise to the top’ with a grounding red element representing the resilience needed to get there.โ€

The custom paint design, which will start flying Dec. 18, will be assigned primarily trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes. Serving Deltaโ€™s commitment and path to a more sustainable future, the A330-900 is a key part of Deltaโ€™s widebody fleet renewal plan and is 21% more fuel efficient per ASM than the 767s it replaces in the fleet. The plane encompasses Deltaโ€™s enduring support for Team USA and its pursuit of excellence.

To further its commitment to Team USA, Delta has also proudly partnered with six inspiring athletes on their journey to the Beijing Winter Games. Delta and Team USA have a shared drive to be the best, and the airline will support these athletes both on and off the field of play, celebrating their stories of resilience and perseverance as they pursue their Olympic and Paralympic dreams.

Delta is all about helping peopleโ€™s dreams take flight, whether youโ€™re an Olympic or Paralympic athlete or an everyday traveler. This plane is one of many ways Delta will bring the Olympic and Paralympic spirit to life in the air and on the groundโ€”and as an athlete, Iโ€™m honored to be a part of this journey.โ€

As Team USAโ€™s official airline, Delta will manage travel for U.S. Olympians and Paralympians to Beijing 2022, Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026 and LA28, where it also is an inaugural founding partner. The first Beijing-bound flight will depart in January from Los Angeles International Airport and operate as a charter in order to meet Chinese government entry requirements. Deltaโ€™s charter flights are the only way Team USA athletes and staff will travel to Beijing 2022 from the U.S.

โ€œEven through a global pandemic, Team USA athletes have endured and thrived in pursuit of the Olympic and Paralympic dream,โ€ said Bill Wernecke, Managing Director โ€“ Charter Operations. โ€œWe are proud to carry this extraordinary team into competition and we look forward to being the first to welcome them home.โ€

The partnership with Team USA furthers the global airlineโ€™s longstanding support for sportโ€”and its proud history supporting Team USA at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Delta served as a past sponsor of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in its hometown in the Atlanta 1996 and Salt Lake City 2002.
