At the beginning of October 2025, the Latvian airline airBaltic marks the 30th anniversary of the route between its home base in Riga, Latvia, and Helsinki, Finland. This was the airlineโ€™s second-ever direct service, following the first commercial flight from Riga to Stockholm, Sweden, on October 1, 1995.

Icelandair Joins JFK Terminal 6 for Operations in 2026

A history in Air Canada fashion

The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), in partnership with the Professional Clothing Industry Association Worldwide (PCIAW), recently held its first ever PCIAW Fashion Show at the APEX/IFSA Global EXPO 2025 in Long Beach. A team of Air Canada employees took this opportunity to give everyone a glimpse of the airlineโ€™s long history by showcasing its uniforms throughout the years. This curated runway event highlighted six different eras in Air Canadaโ€™s history: 1938, 1953-1964, 1969-1973, 1996-2004 and 2017 to present. Representing each era were Air Canadaโ€™s Los Angeles-based employees as well as Montreal based flight attendants.

1938: First era

Representing Trans-Canada Airline (TCA), as Air Canada was known when it was founded in 1937, Kerem walked down the runway proudly showcasing the very first page in Air Canadaโ€™s fashion history. โ€œI truly love how fashionable, comfortable, and professional it feels.โ€

How does it feel wearing the very first flight attendant uniform? โ€œIt’s such an honour because it carries so much history. If I had to pick favourites, this one and the blue uniform stand out to me. They’re feminine, elegant, and beautifully detailed. It was a joy to wear!โ€ Although very fashionable, this version of the uniform is the shortest lived in Air Canada/TCA’s history and only lasted from July to October 1938. It was replaced with a similar design; a summer grey version and a winter blue version starting that October until 1949.

1953-1964: Blue era?

Amber proudly represented our โ€ฆ blue era. How did Amber feel about the blue? โ€œI just loved the blue uniform! It was comfortable from the minute I put it on, and its tailored fit really made it stylish.โ€ Her favourite part of it? โ€œThe hat may have been my favourite part of this uniform, it truly added the final touch!โ€

1969-1973: Colorful era

Designed by Leo Chevalier, a Quรฉbec trailblazing fashion designer, this version of uniforms from the early 70s was definitely Air Canada’s most colourful era โ€“ and a visual representation of the seventies cultural era! What did Silvia think of the uniform she modelled? โ€œIt was great but wouldn’t want to wear it today!โ€ It was very much of its time, indeed. โ€œI preferred the one Vanessa wore (1973-1978), it seemed very comfortable, more casual but still elegant.โ€

After the initial launch in 1969, an important milestone is the introduction of pants! It was the first time in Air Canada’s history that pants were included in the uniform. 

1973-1978: Versatile era

Vanessaโ€™s impression of the fashion show? โ€œWalking the runway in such an iconic uniform was definitely the highlight! I felt proud showing off a piece of Air Canada history.โ€ Coincidentally, the pieces she was wearing were also presented and introduced at a fashion show in Vancouver in May 1978. Cosplaying the 70s, Vanessa got to model the most versatile version of our uniforms. 

Employees back then could choose from over 50 pieces of uniform, mix and match and make it their own. The list included a long-sleeved and short-sleeved jacket, five different skirts, two pairs of pants, two sweaters and four different blouses. To accessorize, they had a belt, scarves, berets, toques, folding umbrellas, leather bags and โ€ฆ a rainhat! 

1996-2004: Modern-trend era

This new version debuted at the โ€œNew Uniform Fashion Showโ€ on January 29, 1996. What makes this one special? It marked the first time the uniforms of all Air Canada employees changed simultaneously. 

Would Tsige wear the 90s uniform today? โ€œI really liked the dress, it was so comfortable,โ€ she said. Aside from the shoulder pads, which are very much of their time, this version of the uniform was a very modern look for Air Canada.  

2017-present: True-to-brand era

And finally, our current uniform! Imagined by Canadian designer Christopher Bates, it was recognized with a few awards including the NAUMD 2018 Best of the Best Award for Outstanding Uniform Design and the PCIAW 2018 Award for Outstanding Corporate Design. How was it for Veronique to represent her own uniform in the fashion show? โ€œWalking to the stage representing the actual Air Canada uniform, it was an honour for me. This was a wonderful and fulfilling experience.โ€

These werenโ€™t just uniforms. They were symbols of adventure, ambition and grace. Each look carried the legacy of those who wore them with pride. The show was a celebration of history, of fashion, and of the people who made it iconic. To bring them out of the archives was a very special moment for everyone involved and it was an important one: Because some symbols deserve to be remembered forever.

The design, chosen by public vote earlier this year, celebrates Puerto Ricoโ€™s culture and heritage with bold imagery including the jรญbaro figure on the tail, tropical fruits and flora along the fuselage, and the phrase โ€œSomos Boricuaโ€ emblazoned on the belly. The aircraft was revealed at San Juanโ€™s Luis Muรฑoz Marรญn International Airport in a ceremony attended by community members, local leaders, and JetBlue crewmembers.

The livery symbolizes JetBlueโ€™s deep ties to Puerto Rico, where it has operated since 2002 and now serves as the islandโ€™s largest carrier. Leaders including Puerto Ricoโ€™s governor, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Discover Puerto Rico, and Aerostar praised the initiative as both a cultural tribute and an economic driver, reinforcing the islandโ€™s role as a premier travel destination.

This marks JetBlueโ€™s second Puerto Ricoโ€‘themed livery, following Bluericua in 2018. The project also included a partnership with the Ricky Martin Foundation, where local children created their own tailfin designs, highlighting the next generation of Puerto Rican creativity. JetBlue further supported the foundation with a donation to youth programs.

JetBlue continues to expand its presence on the island, operating more than 45 daily flights this winter from San Juan, Aguadilla, and Ponce, and recently increasing service on the Fort Lauderdaleโ€“San Juan route. The airline employs nearly 800 crewmembers in Puerto Rico and opened its first crew base outside the continental U.S. in San Juan in 2024, underscoring its longโ€‘term commitment to the islandโ€™s economy and community.

British Airways is expanding its transatlantic network with the launch of a new direct service from London Heathrow to St. Louis, Missouri.

The new route makes British Airways the only UK airline to offer direct flights to St. Louis โ€“ a destination known for its history, culture and character. From its iconic Gateway Arch to its vibrant neighbourhoods, expansive green spaces and thriving food and music scenes, the city offers something for every customer.

Flights will begin on 19 April 2026 and operate four times per week throughout the summer season.

The launch coincides with the 100th anniversary of Route 66 โ€“ the legendary highway that begins in Chicago and winds through St. Louis on its way to Los Angeles. The cityโ€™s stretch of the โ€œMother Roadโ€ is packed with Americana charm, from vintage diners and neon signs to historic motels and roadside attractions, offering the perfect starting point for travellers seeking a classic US road trip experience.

Beyond its Route 66 heritage, St. Louis is home to Forest Park โ€“ one of the largest urban parks in the US โ€“, a range of free museums and a thriving craft beer scene, making it an ideal destination for both short breaks and longer adventures. The city also boasts a proud sporting legacy, with teams including the St. Louis Cardinals (Major League Baseball), Blues (National Hockey League) and City Soccer Club (Major League Soccer), earning the title of โ€œUltimate Sports Cityโ€ by ESPN The Magazine.

Customers have a choice of three cabins โ€“ World Traveller (economy), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and Club World (business class) โ€“ with return fares from ยฃ529, on sale today.

Customers in Club World will be able to experience the airlineโ€™s latest business class seat, Club Suite, on selected flights, offering personal space with direct aisle access, a full flat bed and a 17โ€ high-resolution screen for entertainment. The cabin also features a brasserie-style dining experience, with a choice of freshly prepared starters, mains, desserts and cheeses.

St. Louis becomes the airlineโ€™s 27th US destination, with British Airways flying to more cities across the country than any other UK airline. With this new route, customers have access to one of the worldโ€™s most extensive global networks. The service will also benefit from the Atlantic Joint Business partnership with American Airlines, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus and LEVEL, offering seamless connections and competitive fares across Europe and North America.

The launch of St. Louis flights follows British Airwaysโ€™ recent frequency increases to popular US destinations. From Summer 2026, the airline will reintroduce its double-daily service to Miami and daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth, increase flights to Las Vegas from 10 to 13 per week, and fly to both San Diego and Austin 14 times per week. New York (JFK) will operate exclusively from London Heathrow, with nine daily flights, including a new service operated by the airline’s 777-200 fleet, featuring First and Club Suite โ€“ offering a more premium experience for every customer travelling on its flagship route.
