Delta opens a new Sky Club at FLL

Delta Air Lines has made this announcement:

Soaring floor-to-ceiling windows with runway views, thoughtful interior touches, regional artwork and a central, mezzanine-level location are just a few of the highlights that guests can look forward to in Deltaโ€™s newest Club.

Opening June 23 in Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), the new Delta Sky Club is among the latest enhancements to open for guests in Terminal 2, which is nearing the completion of a multi-year modernization project. The $153 million modernization project, expected to be substantially completed this fall, will include a 33,000 square-foot terminal expansion with new waiting areas and seating, more dining and shopping options, and security checkpoint enhancements, among other upgrades.

The Club is also one of the first Delta Sky Club locations to safely reintroduce its signature hot food offerings after suspending those options at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fresh and healthy fare will include breakfast favorites, regional specialties and an all-day selection of soups, salads, sandwiches, quick snacks and indulgent desserts. The Clubโ€™s award-winning beverage program will offer a rotating selection of seasonal, premium cocktails for guests over 21 to enjoy from the bar.

With the support and guidance of Deltaโ€™s Chief Health Officer, the continued mask requirement and increasing vaccination rates nationwide, hot food items in self-serve food stations will roll out to additional Clubs in stages, beginning with Deltaโ€™s hub locations and the newly opened Fort Lauderdale Club. A phased roll-out for the entire network will continue through the end of the year, in adherence to local and state regulations.

As Delta Sky Clubs begin to look more familiar to guests, they can rest assured knowing guest health and safety is at the forefront of every decision. Delta Sky Clubs continue to wipe down high-touch areas, offer hand sanitizer dispensers and require employees and guests to wear face masks at all times, in accordance with federal law. Clubs will also supply gloves as an optional layer of protection for guests at self-serve food stations.

With the opening of the Fort Lauderdale Club, all of Deltaโ€™s Clubs will be reopened by the end of June. After relaxing in Deltaโ€™s newest Club, South Florida travelers can catch one of Deltaโ€™s 32 average daily departures from Fort Lauderdale to 10 cities, including eight Delta stations that offer onward connections: Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit, New York-JFK, New York-LaGuardia, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Raleigh Durham, Salt Lake City and new daily service to Los Angeles. Delta Air Lines and Kenya Airways boost connectivity between U.S. and Africa

Delta Air Lines and Kenya Airways PLC have expanded their codeshare agreement, increasing the choice of destinations offered by Delta in Africa and extending Kenya Airwaysโ€™ reach in North America via the U.S. gateway of New York-JFK. The new agreement enhances the airlinesโ€™ already extensive codeshare network to offer seamless travel to a total of 39 cities across Africa, the U.S. and Canada.

The enhanced agreement enables Delta customers flying nonstop on the airlineโ€™s services from New York-JFK to Accra, Ghana, to connect with Delta-marketed codeshare flights to Monrovia, Liberia, and Freetown, Sierra Leone, operated by Kenya Airways. Delta-marketed codeshare flights will also be available on Kenya Airwaysโ€™ services from Nairobi to Cape Town, South Africa; Harare, Zimbabwe; and Kigali, Rwanda.

From New York-JFK, Kenya Airways has placed its code on Deltaโ€™s services to Washingtonโ€™s Ronald Regan National Airport, offering customers increased access to the U.S. capital, as well as to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Delta and Kenya Airways are both members of the SkyTeam alliance. Frequent Flyers can earn and redeem miles on both airlines, while Elite Plus travelers benefit from SkyPriority services.

Delta accelerates hiring as customers return to travel

Delta Air Lines is working quickly to increase staffing in Reservations and Customer Care, Airport Customer Service and Cargo, Flight Operations and Tech Operations in support of customersโ€™ speedy return to travel.

Reservations and Customer Careย has handled record-breaking customer volumes all year, reaching 96 percent of 2019 levels as more leisure travelers return to the skies and need assistance. With staffing that was diminished by 50 percent when Delta people took voluntary early retirement or separation packages that helped the airline survive pandemic-driven challenges in 2020, call wait times have caused customer frustration. The Res & Care team is working quickly to return to service excellence levels that customers expect.

Res & Care will have 1,300 Reservation specialists trained and ready to serve customers by fall. The division will also welcome back about 200 Delta alumni in short-term contractor roles by the end of July to deliver the Delta Difference, as only Delta people can. The team has also contracted with a trusted travel agency partner to assist with customer service messaging over the next several months. Res & Care continues to partner with teams across the company to quickly diagnose tech issues and find real-time solutions to optimize the customer experience.

Delta encourages customers to delay calling if their travel need is not urgent or if their departure date is more than a week away. Instead of calling, customers can also use delta.com and the Fly Delta app to change or cancel a flight, find baggage information, manage SkyMilesยฎ and more. A recent update to the self-service option within the app now allows customers to select and change an existing trip within 24 hours of departure using Same-Day change and browse from an array of alternative flight options.

Airport Customer Service and Cargoย hiring has been underway for several weeks with more than 200 hiring events resulting in 2,000 new hires on board and another 1,200 hires in the recruitment pipeline, who are expected to start with Delta very soon. Additionally, nearly 1,200 positions are being recruited to support Global Cleanliness in key locations, including Atlanta, Detroit and Salt Lake City. The division is also supplementing key customer service issues such as wheelchair staffing. Theyโ€™re continuing to discuss staffing levels with our partners โ€“ TSA, FAA, ATC โ€“ to provide our customers with a positiveย  experience across the travel journey.

Also, effective July 1, ACS and Cargo will sunset the Ready Reserve program, transitioning 7,000 people to CSA benefit-eligible roles and creating more flexible staffing options with an employee group that can work 20-40 hours based on operational demand.

Flight Operationsย will begin hiring pilots beginning this month, starting with candidates who currently hold conditional job offers from before the COVID-19 pandemic and have already been through our screening and interview process. Delta plans to hire more than 1,000 pilots before next summer, supporting Deltaโ€™s efforts to grow our domestic and global network to meet customer demand.

Flight Operations also announced theย reopening of the application for Propel Advanceย โ€“ Deltaโ€™s pilot career path program for employees who wish to pursue a career as a pilot.

In-Flight Servicesย will begin recruiting and hiring in Fall 2021. Additionally, about 1,300 Flight Attendants are returning from LOAs/PLOCs this October. With these additions, we will see the lowest schedule values in nearly a decade. Additionally, the division plans to bring back more than 1,600 candidates who were previously in training or had a conditional job offer prior to the pandemic.

Tech Opsย plans to hire as many as 1,000 new mechanics, technicians and other team members by the end of 2021 to support the growing operation โ€“ ensuring that Delta continues to lead the industry in on-time arrivals and zero-cancellation days. The roles are a combination of operational and support roles for the TechOps division, including merit, Technician and related positions within Avionics, Maintenance Operations and Engineering. The airline is also hiring for positions that support its MRO business and subsidiary businesses, Delta Flight Products and Delta Material Services โ€“ all in an effort to continue delivering the world-class products and experience customers have come to know and love from Delta.

Aeromexico obtains court approval extending the exclusive period to file a plan

Grupo Aeromรฉxico, S.A.B. de C.V. informs that the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, presiding over Aeromexico’s Chapter 11 voluntary financial restructuring process, has approved a 75 calendar day extension of the Company’s exclusive period to propose a plan of reorganization. ย The Court approved the extension because, among other reasons, of the good progress the Company has made with its restructuring.

Aeromexico will continue pursuing, in an orderly manner, its voluntary financial restructuring through Chapter 11, while continuing to operate and offer services to its customers and contracting from its suppliers the goods and services required for operations. The Company will continue to strengthen its financial position and liquidity, protect and preserve its operations and assets, and implement necessary adjustments to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.

Air France and SNCF to operate an additional 7 “Train + Air” services

Air France made this announcement:

For over 25 years, Air France and SNCF French Railways have been offering their customers a service allowing them to combine train and air travel in the same reservation. Called “Train + Air”, it is used every year by more than 160,000 customers to and from Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly airports.

As of today, Air France customers can book a combined “Train + Air” trip on 7 additional routes, for travel as from 19 July 2021:

  • between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Aix-en-Provence TGV, Bordeaux Saint-Jean, Marseille Saint-Charles and Montpellier Saint-Roch;
  • between Paris-Orly (via Massy TGV station) and Avignon TGV, Marseille Saint-Charles and Valence TGV.

This extension of this network increases the number of stations offered by Air France as part of the “Train + Air” service to 18: Aix-en-Provence TGV, Angers Saint-Laud, Avignon TGV, Bordeaux Saint-Jean, Champagne-Ardenne TGV, Le Mans, Lille Europe, Lorraine TGV, Lyon Part-Dieu, Marseille Saint-Charles, Montpellier Saint-Roch, Nantes, Nimes, Poitiers, Rennes, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, Strasbourg and Valence TGV.

Thanks to “Train + Air”, customers have a single reservation for their entire journey and a guaranteed seat on the next available flight or TGV INOUI train, free of charge, if their flight or train arrives late.

As part of the Flying Blue frequent flyer programme, they also earn Miles on the rail leg. In addition, Air France customers travelling in the La Premiรจre or Business cabin also travel in first class on SNCF trains.
Digital tests on the CDG and/or Massy TGV – Lille and CDG and/or Massy TGV – Strasbourg routes
To make this combined “Train + Air” journey even simpler, Air France and SNCF are currently testing a new, fully digitalized service, for customers departing from Lille Europe and Strasbourg who have a connection on an Air France flight at Paris-Charles de Gaulle or Paris-Orly.

British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) demands action from the UK government

British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) issued this statement:

BALPA urges Government to act now as research shows devastating effect on UK airlines and airports

UK aviation industry is the โ€˜hardest hitโ€™ in Europe by restrictions on international travel, an analysis of official European air traffic data for June 2021 by The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) has revealed.

The analysis of data from European air traffic agency โ€˜Eurocontrolโ€™ย  has been published by BALPA โ€“ the trade union for British pilots – ahead of a national Travel Day of Action on Wednesday (June 23).

The number of flights into and out of the UK has collapsed by three-quarters (73%) in the latest official data, compared to 2019. The data shows that Gatwick and Manchester airports are the worse affected in Europe, with Heathrow and Stansted close behind.

According to world trade body the International Air Transport Association, 860,000 jobs in UK aviation travel and tourism have been lost or are on furlough and are at risk of being lost.

The Government claims to have given ยฃ7bn in support to UK aviation but most of this is either standard furlough payments or loans which the industry will struggle to pay back with virtually no income. By contrast, European and US Governments have given direct financial support to their airlines which the UK Government promised but has failed to deliver.

Brianย Strutton, BALPA Acting General Secretaryย responded to the release of these latest statistics:

โ€œItโ€™s official. The UK aviation industry is the hardest hit in Europe, caused by the UK Governments ludicrously cautious restrictions on international travel. Hapless Ministers give all the appearance of deliberately attacking aviation and tormenting the public with their mixed messages over summer holidays. BALPA is demanding that the UK Government gets its act together and opens the US routes and European holiday travel destinations that it has blocked with no published evidence at all.

โ€œIf the country is going to build back better from the pandemic and build new international links with partners for trade and travel, we are going to need a thriving aviation industry. There is no time to hide behind task forces and reviews. This week pilots will be calling on the Government to act now to save jobs by taking a transparent, evidence-based approach to travel restrictions, extending the furlough scheme and helping airlines and airports weather this storm through direct financial support.โ€

BALPA pilots will join colleagues from across the aviation and travel industry to take their message to MPs in Westminster, and MSPs in Holyrood, as part of the nationwide Travel Day of Action on Wednesday, June 23, 2021. Pilots will also join action at Heathrow, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester airports.

Pilots are calling for the UK Government to:

  • Allow international travel to return safely and in a risk managed way by properly implementing the Global Travel Taskforceโ€™s plan for a transparent traffic-light system, by expanding theย Greenย list in line with the evidence and making restrictions more proportionate, whilst keeping a strong red list to guard against variants.
  • Bring forward a package of tailored financial support, including extension of furlough support,ย recognisingย that the travel sectorโ€™s ability to trade and generate income is much slower than first anticipated and more gradual than for businesses in the domestic economy.

American Airlines cancels hundreds of amid staff shortages

From CBS Evening News:

“American Airlines, canceled hundreds of flights over Father’s Day weekend.

In a statement, American Airlines blamed the disruptions in part on “unprecedented weather,” saying, “We never want to disappoint, and feel these schedule adjustments will help โ€ฆ minimize surprises at the airport.”

“With all due respect, weather is always going to be there. That’s not going to cause hundreds of cancelations unless there’s a typhoon,” CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg said.

“You have problems with staffing, you have problems with trainings, you have a problem with logistics, and the numbers are just getting worse and worse,” Greenberg continued.

American Airlines says the remainder of their furloughed pilots won’t be fully ready to fly until at least the end of the month.”

Delta to hire 1,000+ pilots by next summer, opens more European routes

From CNBC:

“Delta Air Linesย told staff on Monday that it expects to hire more than 1,000 pilots by next summer, the latest move by an airline to cater to a rebound in travel demand.

Delta in April said it wouldย resume hiring midyear as bookings began to recover from the coronavirus pandemic slump, starting with about 75 pilots from June through August.”

In other news, Delta has announced flights to Amsterdam, Lisbon and Frankfurt are now open to U.S. travelers:

  • The Netherlands, Germany and Portugal reopen to U.S. travelers
  • Delta operating more flights to Amsterdam than any other U.S. airline
  • Italy eliminates COVID-tested travel protocol; fully vaccinated travelers can enter without additional requirements
  • See full schedule for open Europe destinations

After more than a year of restrictions on international travel, Europe is reopening for U.S. leisure and other non-essential travelers โ€“ with the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal being the latest countries to welcome back those seeking new adventures or reconnecting with loved ones.

Beginning June 24, the Netherlands will open to all U.S. travelers without testing, vaccination, or quarantine requirements. Portugal announced its reopening on June 15, requiring travelers to present a negative 72-hour PCR/NAAT test or a negative 24-hour antigen test upon entry.

Italy has also eased its entry requirements alongside Germany โ€“ customers can provide either proof of vaccination, a negative antigen/PCR/molecular test result within 48 hours from arrival or proof of COVID-19 recovery. As such, Delta has ended its pioneering COVID-testing protocol for all Italy flights effective June 21, and upcoming flights will now follow the standard entry requirements.

Customers venturing across the pond can easily connect to Deltaโ€™s Amsterdam hub with over 50 weekly flights from nearly every U.S. hub by July 7: Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York-JFK, Seattle and Salt Lake City โ€“ making Delta the largest U.S. airline serving the Netherlands. Deltaโ€™s longtime partnership with KLM has also helped the airline maintain AMS service since the beginning of the pandemic, keeping a vital gateway open for essential travelers connecting across Europe.

On Aug. 1, Delta returns to Lisbon with daily service from New York-JFK, more than a year since pausing flights due to COVID-19.

Delta will also continue operating nonstop daily service between Atlanta and Frankfurt. Customers can connect from almost 150 U.S. cities to Deltaโ€™s largest hub, providing multiple opportunities for a one-stop departure to Germanyโ€™s busiest airport.
