ANA produces a fiscal first half net profit of $301 million

ANA puts the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner into revenue service

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) made aviation history today (October 26) by operating the first ever revenue passenger flight of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The specially chartered flight took off from Tokyo (Narita Airport) with more than 240 passengers of board just after midday and landed four and a half hours later in Hong Kong.

Built mainly from carbon fiber composite material, the Dreamliner raises the bar for fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. The 787 uses 20% less fuel, meaning it is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes while cutting carbon emissions.

The Dreamliner’s other innovation include:

1. Passenger-friendly cabin air pressure – Passenger comfort will be improved by maintaining air pressure inside the cabin at the equivalent of an altitude of 6,000 feet (1,800m), noticeably lower than the 8,000 feet (2,400m) maintained on conventional aircraft. The plane’s composite materials also allow for humidity to be maintained at a more comfortable level for passengers.

2. Auto-dimming windows – The 787’s windows are 30% larger than those on the Boeing 767. A higher eye level means passengers can maintain a view of the horizon throughout the flight while smart glass “auto-dimming” windows use electro-chromatic technology to reduce cabin glare at a touch of a button while allowing passengers to still see outside.

3. Largest overhead compartments yet – approximately 30% larger than those on the Boeing 777, the overhead compartments are the largest in the industry and have enough space to hold four large-size carry-on bags.

The 787 Dreamliner has strong links with Japan, with Japanese manufacturers providing approximately 35% of all the aircraft parts, including key sections of the wings and fuselage.

ANA has ordered 55 Dreamliners from Boeing and has already received two planes, with a total of 20 expected to be delivered by the end of FY2012. The Dreamliners will eventually help ANA save $130 million through fuel savings.

Scheduled services featuring the Dreamliner will begin on November 1, 2011 to domestic Japanese destinations and international services on ANA will commence in the following two months with flights initially to Beijing and Frankfurt.

ANA takes delivery of its second Boeing 787 Dreamliner

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) accepted the second Boeing 787 Dreamliner yesterday (October 13). The pictured 787-881 N1014X (msn 34497) became JA802A on delivery. The second Dreamliner is expected to fly to Japan this weekend.

The Dreamliner’s first regular domestic service will be the Tokyo (Haneda)-Okayama route starting on November 1, with a flight on the Tokyo (Haneda)-Hiroshima route also departing the same day.

The new type will also be introduced on the Tokyo (Haneda)-Beijing route in December, marking the aircraft’s first regular international service.

The Dreamliner’s first regular domestic service will be the Haneda-Okayama route starting on November 1, with a flight on the Haneda-Hiroshima route also departing the same day.

ANA will also operate a special charter flight between Tokyo (Narita) and Hong Kong on October 26 and 27. It will be the world’s first passenger flight of the Dreamliner. On the following days (October 28 and 29), excursion flights departing from and landing in Narita will allow more customers to experience the increased level of comfort associated with a flight in the Dreamliner.

ANA will commence the first long-haul international route to Europe using the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on January 21, 2012 when it begins its Tokyo (Haneda) to Frankfurt service.

Air Nippon first officer mistakes the rudder trim knob for the cockpit door lock, sends the 737 in flight almost upside down

Air Nippon (ANA) (Tokyo) and ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) are investigating an incident on September 6 on flight EL 140 between Naha and Tokyo (Haneda) with 117 passengers and crew on board a Boeing 737-700. Apparently the first officer mistook the rudder trim knob for the cockpit door lock to allow the captain back into the cockpit. According to this report by GMA News and Gizmodo, the action “caused the jet to roll and drop 1,900 meters in 30 seconds”. According to internal investigations, “the narrow-body aircraft continued to roll until it reached 131.7 degrees to the left, leaving it almost belly-up”.

Two flight attendants were injured.

Boeing hands over the first 787 Dreamliner to ANA

Boeing (Chicago) and ANA (All Nippon Airweays) (Tokyo) yesterday (September 25) as planned signed the formal documents completing the contractual delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner. Celebrations to mark this historic milestone begin today in Everett with a delivery ceremony followed by flyaway of the airplane on Tuesday. The signing comes after a series of flights, inspections and the transfer of funds.

Celebrations for Boeing employees begin Monday at 6 a.m. (0600) (Pacific time) outside the 787 factory in Everett with the static display of ZA002, one of the flight test airplanes painted in ANA’s livery. ANA and Boeing executives, employees, partners and government officials will gather at 9 a.m. (0900) for the delivery ceremony in the same location. The pictured “Airplane 24”, painted in ANA’s special livery, will join the display during the ceremony. Flyaway of the airplane to Tokyo is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 6:35 a.m. (0635) from Paine Field.

ANA, Boeing set date for first 787 Dreamliner delivery

Boeing (Chicago) and ANA (All Nippon Airways) announced on August 26 they will celebrate the delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner on September 26 in Everett (Paine Field). The actual contractual delivery occurs on September 25. Events throughout the day on September 26 will commemorate delivery of this game changing airplane to its launch customer.

ANA’s first Dreamliner will arrive in Tokyo on September 28, following a September 27 departure from Everett (Paine Field) and will be greeted by ANA employees, media and Japanese partners.

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) will launch Tokyo (Haneda)-Frankfurt and Nagoya-Hong Kong flights in the second half of fiscal year 2011. The 787 Dreamliner will be operated on this new FRA route.

Boeing rolls out of the paint shop the first delivery 787 for ANA

Boeing (Chicago) yesterday (August 6) rolled out Boeing 787-881 JA801A (msn 34485) out of the paint shop at Everett (Paine Field). The Dreamliner bears a special livery signifying the core element’s of ANA’s service brand – innovation, uniqueness and the inspiration of Japan.

ANA’s first 787 features a short-haul international interior design with business- and economy-class cabins.

Boeing plans to deliver the first 787 to ANA in September. ANA will operate its first 787 revenue flight as a charter flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong.
