Theย Nagorno-Karabakh Republicย (NKR)ย orย Artsakh Republicย is aย de factoย independentย republicย located in theย Nagorno-Karabakhย region of theย South Caucasus. It controls most of the territory of the formerย Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblastย and severalย Azerbaijani districtsย adjacent to the borders of Azerbaijan withย Armeniaย to the west andย Iranย to the south.
The predominantlyย Armenian-populated region ofย Nagorno-Karabakhย became a disputed area betweenย Armeniaย andย Azerbaijanย when both countries gained independence from theย Russian Empireย in 1918. After theย Soviet Unionย established control over the area, in 1923 it formed theย Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblastย (NKAO) within theย Azerbaijan SSR. In the final years of theย Soviet Union, the region re-emerged as a source of dispute betweenย Armeniaย andย Azerbaijan, culminating in a large ethnic conflict and, eventually, in theย Nagorno-Karabakh Warย that was fought from 1991 to 1994.
