British Airways strives to remove a quarter of a billion single-use plastic from flights by the end of 2020

British Airways has announced aย newย target to removeย more than 700ย tons of single-use plasticย on board its flightsย in 2020, amounting to more than a quarter of a billion individual itemsย of plastic and equivalent toย more than 30,000 suitcasesย full of single-use plastic*,ย even more thanย the numberย ofย bagsย customersย checkย in with the airlineย atย Heathrowย on an averageย day.

Theย airlineย has alreadyย rolledย outย initiativesย to removeย 25 millionย individual itemsย of single-use plasticย on board each year, equivalent to 90 tonnes,ย andย has nowย setย itself an ambitious targetย to increase this byย more thanย 700%.

British Airwaysย hasย beenย workingย closelyย with its suppliers toย identifyย alternatives toย single-use plasticย items, and this yearย itย will replaceย as many as possibleย with recyclableย orย re-usableย itemsย orย itemsย fromย sustainableย sources.ย To date, the airlineย hasย achieved the following plastic reductions:

  • Swapped plastic stirrers with bamboo alternatives
  • Reduced plasticย packaging on Club World amenity kits
  • Swappedย plastic wrapping for all beddingย and blanketsย for paper wrapping (currentlyย being rolled out across all cabins)
  • Removed plastic wrapping on headsetsย and insteadย placedย theseย inside paper charity envelopesย in World Traveller cabins
  • Water bottles on board are made from 50% recycled plastic
  • Removed inflight retail plastic bags

The target also includesย finding alternatives toย single-useย plastic cutlery, tumblers, cups, toothpicks and butter packaging on board.ย The airline described theย process of making theseย changes as complex, withย a significant amount of research required to ensure that theย alternativeย products sourcedย areย crediblyย sustainable,ย offer the same hygiene levels as their plastic counterpartsย and do not outweigh the items they replace.

Kate Tanner, British Airwaysโ€™ย Customer Experience Managerย said:

โ€œOur customers have told us that they want to see these changes and weโ€™reย pleasedย to have made real strides in our journey to becomingย more sustainable.ย Weโ€™veย spent aย long timeย researchingย howย toย make sustainable changes without causing environmental impact elsewhere.ย For instance, weย areย lookingย at the amount of water and detergent needed to wash metal cutlery and how often it needs to be replaced versus using plastic or bambooย cutlery.

โ€œWeโ€™ve looked atย how we ensure blankets and other items can be kept cleanย without a plastic coveringย and the lifespan of all the new items compared to the existing ones.ย Someย potentialย replacementย optionsย mayย be heavier, whichย would thenย have an impact onย the weight of the aircraft and therefore on our emissions, so we must ensure weย areย makingย the rightย choices on all replacements.โ€

The airline hasย a teamย of more than 170 War on Waste cabin crew championsย whoย promote bestย practiceย among crew andย identifyย potential new initiativesย to improveย waste reductionย and recyclingย practicesย on board.ย British Airwaysย says it now expects its suppliers to offer sustainable alternativesย as standardย and will be making continual changes to its onboard products as they become available.

To markย the new target British Airways commissionedย eco-artist Sarah Turner to create a giant suitcase made fromย a thousand pieces ofย waste plastic, including 160 spoons,ย more than a dozenย plastic stirrers, drinks lids, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, catering dishes and coversย andย bottles.ย The sculpture, which represents the 30,000 suitcases worth of plastic waste being removed, is currently on display at British Airways’ Headquarters near Heathrow.

British Airways is committedย toย reducing its environmental impact.ย In October 2019, the airline committed to achieving net zeroย carbon emissions by 2050.ย ย From January this year, British Airways began offsetting carbon emissions on all its flights within the UK and is investing heavily in new, more fuel-efficient aircraft and in the development of sustainable aviation fuels.

NOTES:

  • *Figure based on suitcases weighing 23kg.
  • The target of removingย upwards ofย 700 tonnesย of single-use plastic equates toย more thanย 30,000 suitcasesย (23kg)ย โ€“ more than theย combinedย weight of all baggage checked in withย British Airwaysย at London Heathrow each day.

American Airlines and British Airways mark the official start of the JFK Redevelopment Plan

Today, Atlantic Joint Business partners American Airlines and British Airways joined New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) to announce the start of construction on a $344 million investment at New Yorkโ€™s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) Terminal 8 at the Association for a Better New York luncheon in Midtown.

โ€œOur investment will put the 14 daily flights from JFK to London that we offer in partnership with British Airways in the same terminal and give customers premium check-in space, new joint lounges and a larger variety of retail and dining options,โ€ said Robert Isom, President of American. โ€œWe will be adding more than 70,000 square feet to customer and operational spaces to create a truly world-class experience at JFK.โ€

Additionally, airline team members who power the terminal operations will also benefit from closer, faster and easier connections to Americanโ€™s joint business partner British Airways by the additional co-located long-haul aircraft gates and an enhanced baggage system.

โ€œAs we progress with the JFK modernization project, we are giving Terminal 8 a new look and layout in line with the modern, world-class standards that will define the airportโ€™s ultimate transformation,โ€ Cuomo said. โ€œWhen this work is completed, Terminal 8 will accommodate more passengers who will be able to enjoy a better travel experience and will make the work of airport staff more efficient and more seamless.โ€

American and British Airways are the first airlines to mark the start of the transformation of JFK into a state-of-the-art global hub. The upgrades and additions at Terminal 8 will bring improvements in the overall customer experience, including the addition of five widebody gates and four adjacent widebody hard stands (ramp parking where customers are transported to/from terminal via bus), enhanced baggage systems, new lounges, premium check-in space and upgraded concessions and retail options. Additionally, customers arriving in New York will enjoy the ability to more conveniently connect onto other American Airlines flights, and customers departing New York will gain the flexibility of 14 daily flights to London all departing from the same terminal. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

American and British Airways offer the most flights between JFK and Londonโ€™s Heathrow Airport (LHR), a route Business Traveller calls โ€œthe most important and lucrative route for business in the world,โ€ in addition to up to 70 flights a day to London from 26 destinations in the United States.

โ€œThis is an exciting development in our move to Terminal 8, alongside American Airlines, our Atlantic joint-business partner,โ€ British Airwaysโ€™ Chairman and CEO Alex Cruz said. โ€œWe are one step closer to offering an even better customer experience for passengers traveling to, from and through JFK. We look forward to our continued work with the Port Authority and American Airlines in order to build a world-class transatlantic travel experience.โ€

American in New York

New York is a key hub for American, with the airline serving three New York-area airports โ€” JFK, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). At JFK, American flies up to 115 peak day departures that serve 40 destinations in nearly 20 countries. LGA offers an additional 167 daily flights that serve more than 38 destinations, including Americanโ€™s popular Shuttle service between LGA and Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD) and Washington, D.C. (DCA). American also announced extended summer seasonal service from LGA to Aruba (AUA) and continuing service to high-end leisure destinations like Glacier National Park Airport in Kalispell (FCA), and Bozeman, Montana (BZN), based on this yearโ€™s success. Collectively, the airline flies more than 300 daily flights between the three New York airports.

Last month, American started new nonstop service from JFK to Georgetown, Guyana (GEO). The new route follows the recent addition of service to Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ); San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO); and Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR).

Last year, the airline announced the expansion of its exclusive Five Star Service options for its top customers traveling through JFK. American also offers an unmatched premium travel experience on flights between JFK and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on its Airbus A321T aircraft that features fully lie-flat seats, a chef-curated menu, as well as premium wines and amenity kits in Flagship First and Flagship Business.

More than 8,000 American team members call New York home and help support a variety of community and civic programs, including City Year New York, the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Since 2017, American has increased corporate giving to charitable organizations across the city by nearly 40 percent.

Investment in hub airports across the United States

Americanโ€™s JFK hub is not alone in getting an upgrade. American and its airport partners have spent and committed billions of dollars to projects in its other hubs at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Miami International Airport (MIA), DCA and ORD. Recent investments at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) added more gates and an upgraded Admirals Club lounge. At LAX, the airline broke ground on a $1.6 billion project in October 2018.
