British Airways trials robots to guide customers through the airport

British Airways has made this announcement:

British Airways trials robots at Heathrow Terminal 5

  • British Airways announces it will trial state-of-the-art, fully autonomous robots in 2020 to carry out simple tasks
  • Airline wants to enable its airport hosts to concentrate on more complex customer queries
  • Automation across Heathrow Terminal 5 has seen customers enjoying fewer queues and a faster, smoother journey through the airport
  • Robots are the latest innovation investment from British Airways; this year the airline also explored artificial intelligence, driverless baggage vehicles and 3D printing to further improve punctuality for customers

In the latest stage of British Airwaysโ€™ investment in airport automation, the airline has announced that from 2020 it will trial AI-powered autonomous robots at its home at Heathrow Terminal 5 to help some of the 90,000 customers who travel through the terminal each day navigate through the airport, freeing up the airlinesโ€™ award-winning airport hosts to help customers with more complex queries.

The cutting-edge robots from tech company BotsAndUs are programmed to interact with passengersย ย in multiple different languages using the latest translation technology to answer thousands of questions, including real-time flight information.

Additionally, using geo-location technology and dozens of advanced sensors to constantly monitor a 360หšradius, the robot will move around the airport terminal freely and safely, escorting customers to specific locations such as the airlineโ€™s dedicated Special Assistance and Family Check-In zones.

To complement its investment in technology and automation, last year British Airways launched a multi-million pound investment in enhanced training for colleagues as part of its First Contact Resolution Programme at Heathrow. The programme empowers customer service agents to use their expertise, initiative and judgment to solve customer queries on the spot using a suite of specialised apps on iPads. Following the overwhelmingly positive response to the new service from customers at Heathrow, the airline is now rolling the programme out across its worldwide network.

As part of British Airwaysโ€™ ยฃ6.5 billion investment for customers, 2019 saw the carrier install 80 brand-new automated check-in machines and 80 advanced automated bag-drop machines at Heathrow Terminal 5 and, with the airlineโ€™s customer service agents always on hand to help, the airline has seen an increase in customer satisfaction and a dramatic reduction in queues.

British Airways has also completed its roll-out of self-boarding technology across every international gate at Heathrow Terminal 5, leading to fewer flight delays. The gates are the first step towards customers being able to biometrically board international flights from the UK. The airline originally pioneered the use of biometric self-boarding gates on flights within the UK from Heathrow and more than 3.5 million customers have now boarded their flights this way. The airline also introduced biometric facial recognition technology on flights to London from Orlando, Los Angeles and New York, JFK transforming the airport experience and halving the amount of time it takes to board an aircraft.

British Airways and China Southern Airlines launch joint business

British Airways has signed a joint business agreement with China Southern Airlines, for travel from January 2, 2020.

The agreement will benefit customers of both airlines by opening more destinations between the UK and China, with a greater choice of flights and enhanced frequent flyer benefits. British Airways trials 3D printing

British Airways made this announcement:

Photo: British Airways. 3D printing.

  • British Airwaysโ€™ tech experts say the possibilities for 3D printing in aviation are limitless and share predictions of how 3D printers could transform the industry
  • In the future machines could routinely be used to create aircraft parts, reducing delays for customers
  • Initiative is part of airlineโ€™s flightpath to net zero carbon emissions by 2050

British Airways is exploring the possibility of using 3D printers to create aircraft parts in the future. These printers would be located at airports around the world to reduce delays for customers and emissions caused by transporting items.

The airlineโ€™s innovators predict that non-essential cabin parts will be first on the list to be generated, including pieces of tray tables, entertainment systems and toilets. While these components do not impact the safe operation of the flight, they can reduce the number of seats or toilets available for customers and cause delays as engineers wait for the parts to be flown to wherever the aircraft is.

Ricardo Vidal, Head of Innovation at British Airways, says this area of technology has never been more important to ensure sustainability and a seamless travel experience:ย  โ€œWe work with start-ups and innovation partners from around the world to explore and implement the very latest technologies, from artificial intelligence to speed up turnaround times to biometrics, helping us to deliver a seamless airport experience for customers. 3D printing is yet another advancement that will keep us at the forefront of airline innovation.โ€

3D printing is an essential step towards the sustainable future of aviation, as the printers can produce parts that, while as strong and durable as traditional components, weigh up to 55 per cent. Every kilogram removed saves up to 25 tons of CO2 emissions during the lifespan of an aircraft.

British Airwaysโ€™ exploration of 3D printing follows the airlineโ€™s BA2119: Flight of the Future programme in celebration of itโ€™s centenary. Itโ€™s research into the future of the customer experience suggested that within the next decade, biological scanners gathering travellersโ€™ physiological and nutritional needs could suggest food and drink to meet individual requirements and print these on board the aircraft. In addition, the research predicts that jet lag could become be a thing of the past, with 3D printers producing personalised health supplements.

British Airwaysโ€™ top ten predictions for how 3D printing could be used by airlineโ€™s in the future:

British Airways expands “First Contact Resolution” program worldwide

British Airways has made this announcement:

  • British Airways is extending its First Contact Resolution program to colleagues around the world followingย aย successful roll out at Heathrow
  • First Contact Resolutionย enablesย staff to assist and resolve any customerย issue at the airportย rather than refer travelers to Customer Relationsย teams, saving customersโ€™ time and worry
  • The initiative demonstrates the airlineโ€™s continued commitment to provide unique British Airwaysโ€™ customer service

Following the successful launch of British Airwaysโ€™ First Contact Resolution Program at Heathrow last year, the airline is now rolling the program out across every airport it operates to.ย  First Contact Resolution empowers airport hosts to use their expertise, initiative and judgment to solve customer queries on the spot, without waiting for management approval. This allows them to provide instant solutions and peace of mind for customers and send fewer issues to Customer Relations colleagues.

All staffย worldwide areย nowย being further empowered to use their skills and initiative to do the right thing for any customer at that moment. The worldwide rollย outย is a direct result ofย the successful startย of the programme at Heathrow – earlierย this year British Airways won the title of Best Airline Staff in Europe at the prestigious Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The rollย out of First Contact Resolution is a part of British Airwaysโ€™ย ยฃ6.5 billion investment in customer experience over five years. This includes taking delivery of 73 new aircraft including A350 and 787s, refurbishing long-haul aircraft with new cabins, introducing new, redesigned lounges, new dining across all cabins, new bedding and amenity kits for First, Club World and Worldย Travellerย Plus, best quality onboardย WiFiย for every aircraft and access to power at every aircraft seat. The airline recently introduced its Club Suite, a new business class seat with direct-aisle access on its A350 aircraft, which is being rolled out across the British Airways’ long-haul fleet.
