Deltaโ€™s new Airbus A321neo debuts on Boston routes beginning in May 2022

Delta Air Lines’ customers will soon begin seeing the first routes to feature the airlineโ€™s new Airbus A321neo aircraft. The experience-rich, fuel-efficient narrowbody jet arrived in Atlanta last week, and beginning tomorrow, customers may purchase tickets on the first flights the aircraft isย designated to operate.

A321neo-operated flights are set to depart from Delta’s hub at Boston Logan International, bound for San Francisco (SFO), Seattle/Tacoma (SEA), San Diego (SAN) and Denver (DEN). The new aircraft will first depart for San Francisco on May 20 and then debut on existing flights to Seattle beginning August 11.

Delta will continue to take delivery of additional A321neos through the fall, and those new aircraft will also serve San Diego and Denver from Boston (new routes that launch July 11) starting August 20.

The aircraftโ€™s comfortable cabin configuration features thoughtful touches throughout, including a new, domestic First Class seat design with larger, improved privacy space, a sturdier tray table, and more stowage space for personal items, as well as enhanced memory-foam seat cushions in all cabins.

Customers can enjoy Deltaโ€™s industry-leading seatback entertainment on board, with the airline introducing an expanded library of content on new delivery A321neos with 50 percent more hit movies, TV shows and music than other aircraft in its fleet. Access to fast-streaming Wi-Fi and power ports are available at each seat, along with spacious overhead bins and state-of-the-art HEPA cabin air filtration systems throughout.

Deltaโ€™s newest fleet also helps to reinforce the companyโ€™s position as an industry leader in environmental sustainability. Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTFโ„ข engines, the A321neo offers 20% better fuel efficiency over Deltaโ€™s current A321ceos.

Delta takes delivery of its first Airbus A321neo

Delta Air Lines marked the latest milestone in its fleet renewal and expansion efforts with the first delivery of its newest narrowbody, the Airbus A321neo, on Wednesday.

Delta expects to welcome 26 state-of-the-art A321neos to its fleet this year, with a total of 155 purchase commitments through 2027.

โ€œBy adding the latest and largest Airbus single-aisle aircraft to their fleet, the team at Delta Air Lines continues to demonstrate its priority for operational efficiency while pleasing their customers with the most spacious single-aisle cabin in the sky,โ€ said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International.

The 194-seat airplane will include 20 domestic First Class seats, 42 Delta Comfort+ seats and 132 Main Cabin seats, all with memory-foam cushioning for improved customer comfort. While todayโ€™s delivery signals a new chapter, the A321neo complements an already extensive fleet of A321ceos. Once all of the A321neo orders are fulfilled, Deltaโ€™s A321 family will grow to 282 aircraft. The A321neo will be manufactured at the same facilities in Mobile, Alabama, and Hamburg, Germany, where the A321ceos have been built.

After Deltaโ€™sย Technical Operations teams prepare the new models for service, Deltaโ€™s first A321neo is scheduled to enter into service in May.

Delta is outfitting nearly all its domestic mainline aircraft with Wi-Fi

Delta Air Lines has made this announcement:

Streaming your favorite content, finishing an important business presentation or shopping for the perfect gift shouldnโ€™t be things you can only do from your sofa or your desk. Thatโ€™s why Delta is outfitting nearly all its domestic mainline aircraft with Wi-Fi more like what you would find at home by the end of 2022.

โ€œNew Wi-Fi on Delta is faster and more reliable than ever before,โ€ said Glenn Latta, Managing Director โ€“ In-Flight Connectivity. โ€œWeโ€™ve put this connection through countless tests and scrutinized every detail to ensure customers are getting speed and reliability that exceeds their expectations.โ€

Since CEO Ed Bastian outlined Deltaโ€™s vision for the future of travel at CES 2020, connectivity has only become more important to customers. Even amid a global pandemic, the airline doubled down on making that vision a reality by investing in new technology on board that will unlock a new era of connected travel in the years ahead.

Deltaโ€™s Wi-Fi by the numbers

  • New Viasat Wi-Fi is on average up to twice as fast as service offered in 2019
  • More than 300 aircraft are equipped with fast-streaming Viasat Ka-Band Wi-Fi today, and a total of 500+ aircraft planned to offer it by the end of the year
  • 16.9M devices were connected, 200,000 flights flown and 427,000 hours spent browsing on Viasat-equipped aircraft alone since June 2021
  • All 127 A321ceos, 130 Boeing 737-900s and select 757-200 fleets outfitted in 2021, an average of 50 aircraft outfitted per month between June and December 2021
  • More than 50% of domestic enplanements are served by Viasat connectivity

โ€œAs we look for new ways to bring an at-home experience to more customers, we see personal device streaming as an โ€˜andโ€™ for our customers who purchase Wi-Fi access, not an โ€˜orโ€™,โ€ said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, Managing Director โ€“ In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity. โ€œItโ€™s why we recently added new partners like Spotify, HBO Max and Peloton to continue to enrich Delta Studio as a platform and offer even more of the content our customers love. And good news: they can expect to see more of this in 2022.โ€

Read on for three things to know about Deltaโ€™s fast and reliable Wi-Fi.

1. Connecting to Wi-Fi and Free Messaging is simple

Connecting to onboard Wi-Fi is easier than ever. Once onboard, customers can select the โ€œDeltaWiFi.comโ€ network in their deviceโ€™s settings. After connecting, customers will be automatically directed to a landing page where Wi-Fi can be purchased. For a flat rate of $5 per flight customers can stay connected to streaming-quality speeds for the duration of their trip โ€“ from the plane pushback to park.

If you havenโ€™t connected to onboard Wi-Fi in the past, save time with the Fly Delta app by pre-connecting to the โ€œDeltaWifi.comโ€ network directly prior to travel. The app will automatically remember youโ€™ve connected previously, saving you time the next time you travel.

Customers can use their smartphones to stay connected to friends and family through iMessage, Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp at no extra charge with Free Messaging on all Wi-Fi-enabled routes.

2. Spot the decal to know if an aircraft is fast-streaming ready

Customers on Viasat-equipped routes should look for a decal on their planeโ€™s exterior upon boarding (see below). Deltaโ€™s entire Airbus A321ceo, Boeing 757-200 and 737-900 aircraft are outfitted with the new Wi-Fi system as of January 2022.

Additional installations planned for 2022 include select aircraft from Deltaโ€™s Airbus A321neo, A220-300, A320ceo, A319 and Boeing 737-800 fleets โ€“ nearly all of Deltaโ€™s domestic mainline routes by the end of 2022. Keep an eye out for indicators during booking that will denote where โ€œNew Wi-Fiโ€ is available.

3. Use an existing Wi-Fi subscription

The best way for frequent customers to access Wi-Fi onboard is through a subscription via Intelsat (formerly Gogo). Wi-Fi subscriptions purchased through Intelsat can be used on Viasat-enabled flights as well. With one subscription, customers can enjoy seamless access across all Wi-Fi enabled Delta routes.

Delta contributes more than $1M to Ukraine relief, opens giving channels for customers

Delta Air Lines has contributed $1 million to the American Red Cross and Global Red Cross Movement in support of humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine, which are delivering needed supplies, first aid training, evacuation assistance and more.

The airline also has given $100,000 to theย United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to assist in providing humanitarian aid to people affected by the crisis.

Delta encourages customers and employees in the U.S. to get involved by contributing financially to the American Red Cross. For those outside the U.S., contributions can be made through theย International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies website.

Deltaโ€™s contributions โ€“ and those made by Delta people, customers and others โ€“ ย are used for humanitarian relief efforts, including the following from the American Red Cross:

  • Distributing more than 90,000 food and hygiene parcels to families on the move across Ukraine, including Mariupol.
  • Providing first aid training to more than 12,000 people in metro stations and bomb shelters.
  • Delivering more than 32 tons of food, blankets, medicine, medical supplies, trauma kits and household items.
  • Assisting with the evacuation of people with disabilities.
  • Distributing critical care items to over 7,000 people seeking safety from shelling in bomb shelters.

โ€œThe most important way to help is financial giving, as the American Red Cross and the Global Red Cross Movement have the resources and infrastructure to obtain and deliver goods, supplies and trained volunteers to the places and people that need it most,โ€ said Tad Hutcheson, Deltaโ€™s Managing Director of Community Engagement.

The current needs are tremendous, with the most critical including water delivery, support to health facilities and medical care for families wounded, according to the American Red Cross, which is Delta’s longest-standing nonprofit partner.

The partnership has allowed the airline, its customers and employees to help people in need worldwide since 1941. This contribution is in addition to Deltaโ€™s $1 million grant to the American Red Cross as an Annual Disaster Giving Program partner. For more information on the services of the Red Cross and how they are responding to this crisis, please visitย redcross.org.

Plant-based menu options to debut onboard Delta

Delta Air Lines has made this announcement:

The best journey is the one that leaves you feeling better upon arrival than departure. Delta is supporting a healthier you with plant-based food options in airports and on board, unique loyalty partnerships that reward you at home, and in-flight entertainment to relax and unwind during your journey.

โ€œWeโ€™ve taken a careful approach to ensuring each customer feels taken care of during their journey on Delta because connecting the world also means caring for those in it โ€“ and helping them feel their best no matter where they are,โ€ said Dr. Henry Ting โ€“ Chief Health Officer.

Delta partners with leading consumer brands to bring its well-being mission to life across the customer journey. From plant-based food options by Impossible Foods and Black Sheep Foods, to a first-of-its-kind loyalty offer with Instacart, and curated in-flight entertainment with Peloton and Spotify, Delta is introducing more mindful, personalized and health-conscious moments at every step to ensure customers travel well.

EVEN MORE FOOD OPTIONS THAT ARE BETTER FOR YOU AND YOUR WORLD

Alongside the reintroduction of hot meals on board this spring, Delta is serving new plant-based dishes on board featuring products from Impossible Foods and Black Sheep Foods. Beginning this month, customers in premium cabins on select flights can order a variety of Impossibleโ„ข dishes like a green chili spice rubbed Impossibleโ„ข Burger with caramelized onion jam and Manchego cheese.

An Impossible Burger is among Delta's newest menu offerings for Delta One and First Class customers.

Other plant-based dishes include Black Sheep Foodsโ€™s lamb-style meatballs with spinach rice and feta, and cauliflower cakes with creamy pesto orzo. Plant-based meats like Impossibleโ„ข Burger are as delicious as meat from animals and better for the environment, using far less land and water, and emitting significantly less greenhouse gases as conventional meat from animals.

ORGANIC, SUSTAINABLE AND LOCALLY SOURCED FOODS ACROSS YOUR JOURNEY

Delta now offers Kateโ€™s Real Food bars in all cabins, the USDA Certified Organic and nutrient-packed snack that promotes health and wellness by focusing on real ingredients.

In select Delta Sky Clubs, the airline partners with local artisans to highlight handcrafted, regionally made food and beverage products through its Fresh Farm program. These ongoing weekly activations began in late 2021 and will soon be found in Deltaโ€™s west coast hubs (Seattle, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles). In both Sky Clubs and onboard, customers can enjoy menu items in fresh and hot meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients.

At Delta’s Seattle hub, a new experience for international travelers

Delta Air Lines followed Alaska Airlines in celebrating the IAF at Seattle/Tacoma:

International customers arriving at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will soon experience more comfort and convenience than ever, as the airport unveiled a gleaming new facility at a reception for media as well as community and business leaders.

โ€œDelta customers will surely enjoy the benefits that this gorgeous, state-of-the-art International Arrivals Facility will bring to their travel journeys,โ€ said Eric Phillips, S.V.P. โ€ Airport Customer Service and Cargo, who participated in the event. โ€œAs Seattleโ€™s largest global airline and the largest future user of the IAF, Delta is committed to enhancing the customer experience in ways that will serve Seattle well into the future, while also helping to meet the growing regional demand for international service out of this gateway for business and tourism.โ€

Delta has been closely engaged with the Port of Seattle on the construction of the IAF since teams broke ground in 2017. The airline serves more international destinations from Seattle than any other carrier; by August, Delta will offer nearly 45 weekly nonstop flights to Amsterdam, London, Paris, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo. Deltaโ€™s transatlantic flying from Seattle has grown particularly significantly, with almost 50 percent more seats available today compared to 2019. Delta offers more than 140 daily departures to nearly 50 destinations from SEA overall.

The 450,000 square foot facility, slated to open to customers this spring, will increase the airportโ€™s number of internationally capable gates from 12 to 20 and more than double passenger capacity to 2,600 passengers per hour (up from 1,200 today). Located east of the current A Concourse, the new space will feature baggage claim and customs processing areas as well as a new security corridor that will allow dual use of gates on the A Concourse for international and domestic arriving flights.

New amenities such as nursing rooms and pet relief areas will provide a more comfortable experience while passing through customs, and enhanced technologies will ensure faster passport check clearance, reducing the average customer connection time by approximately 15 minutes.

A Delta Boeing 767-300 flying over Seattle, Washington.

And while the buildingโ€™s modern features and conveniences take center stage, the IAF also provides a memorable front door to the Pacific Northwest by highlighting regional art, a focus on sustainability, and dramatic views: the facility features an 85-foot-high aerial walkway โ€“ creating a connection to the S Concourse โ€“ that offers a great look at Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Mountains.

Delta suspends its codeshare agreement with Aeroflot

Delta Air Lines has suspended its codeshare agreement with Aeroflot. Aeroflot and other other Russian businesses are being isolated due to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

โ€œWe have removed our code from Aeroflot-operated services beyond Moscowโ€™s Sheremetyevo Airport and removed Aeroflotโ€™s code from Delta-operated services from Los Angeles and New York-JFK,โ€
