Eurowings hires 750 new flight attendants and pilots

Eurowings is preparing for a strong travel season with backlog effects despite the current Omicron wave. Over the next twelve months, Germany’s largest leisure airline will fill around 750 new positions in the cockpits and cabins of its two AOCs, Eurowings Germany and Eurowings Europe. With this, Eurowings is systematically continuing the course it embarked on last year. During the most difficult crisis in air traffic, the airline successfully completed a comprehensive realignment, focusing more strongly on tourist destinations and the growing private travel business. As a result, the Lufthansa subsidiary was one of the very few airlines in Europe to hire staff again as early as 2021 – around 750 new crew members in the cockpit and cabin, including numerous employees from Lufthansa Group airlines who had lost their jobs. Now Eurowings is set to grow further, both nationally and internationally: in 2022, the airline will add around 550 additional flight attendants and 200 pilots at locations throughout Europe. Staffing levels will also be increased in business areas on the ground, for example at Eurowings Technik in Cologne and Düsseldorf, in sales and in the customer experience division.

Strong catch-up effects expected in 2022

Following a winter once again dominated by Covid, the tourism industry expects strong catch-up effects for vacation travel in the 2022 season. As Germany’s largest leisure airline, Eurowings will offer travelers more choice than ever before in its summer flight schedule, with over 140 destinations. The clear front-runner here is Europe’s popular vacation island Mallorca. Eurowings will fly to Mallorca from more than 20 airports up to 380 times a week in the summer of 2022.

Eurowings expands training offers

Training young people continues to be a high priority for Eurowings after two years with the pandemic. At the company’s locations in Cologne and Düsseldorf, ten applicants will start an apprenticeship or dual study program at Eurowings this year. In cooperation with the maintenance and repair company Nayak-LM Germany GmbH training for aircraft mechanics specializing in maintenance will start at Eurowings Technik in Düsseldorf for the first time. In addition to this, training for industrial clerks is also available for the first time in the airline’s technical operations. At the same time, Eurowings is expanding its range of dual-study programs: in addition to the established business informatics course, the airline is also offering dual-study placements in aviation management and applied computer science for the first time.

Eurowings is once again among the most punctual airlines in Europe

Eurowings was once again among the most punctual and reliable airlines in Europe in 2021. Last year, Germany’s largest vacation airline delivered 90 percent of its guests to their destinations on time – even improving the proportion of on-time flights compared to the pre-Covid year 2019 again, by seven percent.

With new record figures, the airline is confirming a positive trend that has now taken Eurowings to the top of the European competition in the key customer parameters of punctuality and reliability. The performance can be attributed to a comprehensive package of measures with which Eurowings has been ensuring the best possible stability in flight operations for years. Passengers greatly appreciate the recent top performance, which is reflected in consistently high Eurowings customer satisfaction scores

“In the second year of the coronavirus pandemic, we were again able to offer our guests punctual and reliable flight operations – just as they rightly expect from us,” says Eurowings COO Jens Ritter. “I am very proud of the performance of our Eurowings teams, which has enabled us to stand out as a value airline offering fair prices with strong performance and flying at the top of the field.”

At the same time, 2021 was an extremely challenging year for aviation. In a highly volatile period, Eurowings ramped up its flight operations from less than 20 to more than 70 aircraft, virtually from scratch. The Lufthansa subsidiary also had to make up for deficits on the part of system partners. “In 2022, we will continue our undiminished commitment to stable performance and the best possible service – because the satisfaction of our guests is our greatest incentive.”

Confirmation of punctuality by independent portals

Independent portals also regularly confirm that Eurowings has a very good operational performance. Cirium, formerly Flight Global, lists Eurowings among the ten most punctual airlines in Europe in its Performance Review 2021. The British data provider Official Airline Guide (OAG) regularly evaluates the punctuality of more than 100 international airlines. In the evaluation for December 2021, Eurowings takes first place and is the only European airline in the top ten.

The travel industry expects strong catch-up effects for the 2022 summer season after the winter, which was again characterized by Coronavirus. Germany’s largest holiday airline Eurowings will therefore offer more destinations in the 2022 summer flight schedule than ever before.

Anyone who wants to use the cold Christmas days to plan their holiday for 2022 can now choose from more than 140 attractive direct Eurowings connections. With around 2,500 weekly flights, the Eurowings offer has already almost reached the level of the time before Corona. The clear front-runner is the Balearic island of Majorca, which was once again Europe’s most popular sunshine island last year: Eurowings will fly to Majorca from more than 20 airports up to 380 times a week in the summer of 2022, thus further expanding its position as the number one in Balearic traffic. All connections can already be booked with a few clicks via eurowings.com or the Eurowings customer app. The program for 2022 includes a whole series of attractive summer destinations that the Lufthansa subsidiary will fly to for the first time from one of its major bases.

In the summer of 2022, Eurowings will be flying from Hamburg to the Portuguese cities of Lisbon and Porto and the Spanish destinations of Alicante and Bilbao for the first time. In addition, travelers will be able to fly directly from the Hanseatic city to Verona in Italy and Gothenburg for the first time.

From Stuttgart, Eurowings is expanding its offer with a focus on destinations in southern Europe: Porto (Portugal), Adana and Kütahya-Zafer (Turkey), Preveza (Greece), Tbilisi (Georgia) as well as Tivat (Montenegro) and Tunis (Tunisia) are in the program for the first time. The Romanian city of Timisoara is also back on the flight schedule.

From Düsseldorf, Eurowings will offer the new destinations Bergamo, Funchal and Tromsø in the 2021/22 winter flight schedule also in the 2022 summer flight schedule. For the first time, Eurowings will also fly from Düsseldorf to the Greek port city of Volos in the Thessaly region. The Serbian capital Belgrade is a new addition to the schedule. In addition, the airline will once again fly to Kosice (Slovakia) and Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina).

From Cologne/Bonn, Germany’s largest holiday airline is now also flying to the Canary Island of Tenerife and to Alicante in the summer. After the Corona break, the popular Turkish destinations Izmir and Kayseri are also back on the Eurowings flight schedule from Cologne/Bonn.

Eurowings to fly to four new destinations in Northern Europe starting in December

Just in time for the Christmas season, Eurowings has added four very special winter destinations in Sweden, Finland, and Norway to its flight schedule: beginning in early December, the airline will be flying to four new destinations in Northern Europe from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. In the regions around Tromsø (Norway), Luleå and Kiruna (both in Sweden) and Rovaniemi (Finland), which is known as the home region of Santa Claus, fascinating landscapes, and nature experiences such as the polar night, the northern lights or extravagant leisure experiences such as dog sledding or icebreaker trips await travelers from Germany.

From Düsseldorf to Tromsø in Norway

From Düsseldorf, Eurowings’ largest base, Eurowings will take off for Tromsø in Norway for the first time on 4 December. The city lies 344 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, at the latitude of northern Alaska. As a travel destination, the region is particularly attractive because of the northern lights. The Düsseldorf-Tromsø route will be offered every Saturday at prices from 47.99 euros, and also on Tuesdays as of 21 December. An Airbus A319 will be used on the route.

From Düsseldorf to Rovaniemi in Lapland

Also from Düsseldorf, Eurowings will be flying to Rovaniemi in Finland on Sundays beginning on 5 December. The city is near the Arctic Circle, a little further south than Tromsø. In addition to these regular flights, the airline will be flying its passengers from the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia to Rovaniemi on 23 and 30 December 2021 as well as on 4 and 6 January 2022. Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland and is primarily known to tourists from Germany for its northern lights’ tours. However, in addition to the cozy Santa Claus village about eight kilometers north of central Rovaniemi, visitors to the city can also explore the science center and the impressive Arktikum museum, with spectacular architecture and exhibitions on the history of the far North and life in the region. Flights from Düsseldorf to Rovaniemi start at 59.99 euros for a one-way ticket.

From Stuttgart to Kiruna and Luleå in Sweden

The Swedish cities of Kiruna and Luleå are newly accessible from Southern Germany in the 2021/22 winter flight schedule: Eurowings will fly to both destinations from Stuttgart. Flights to Luleå will start on 19 December 2021. Luleå is located in the north of Sweden and captivates with its mystical polar lights and crystal-clear icy landscapes. The area offers attractive leisure experiences such as snowmobile safaris, aurora tours or trips with the icebreaker. Eurowings will be flying the Stuttgart-Luleå route on Wednesdays and Sundays with an Airbus A319 starting in mid-December, with prices starting at 47.99 euros for a one-way ticket.

Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, is the second new destination from Stuttgart. The polar night here lasts from 12 to 31 December. Visitors to the region can look forward to activities such as skiing, dog-sledding and snowshoeing. The ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi is also a visitor magnet: it is rebuilt every year starting in October and opens in December. Eurowings will be flying to northern Sweden every Saturday from 18 December 2021, with prices starting at 47.99 euros for a one-way ticket.

Eurowings aims for more sustainability on board

Germany’s largest holiday airline will be offering a new, more sustainable catering concept on board in the future. Eurowings is increasingly taking the sourcing of products into account and is focusing on a more intensive cooperation with suppliers of sustainable, preferably regional products.

“Avoiding plastic waste is another important part of our more sustainable in-flight product. By 2025, 100 percent of our plastic packaging and in-flight products will be made from renewable or recycled materials” said Lorenza Maggio, Vice President of Customer Experience & Marketing at Eurowings.

Eurowings already uses wooden stirrers and cardboard cups instead of their plastic alternatives, and largely does without cellophane packaging in its Wings Shop offerings.

Also high on the agenda: reducing the amount of food waste. To achieve this goal, Eurowings has decided, among other things, on an exceptional campaign: the airline is introducing a “Happy Hour” on the last flight of each day. Guests will be able to purchase fresh food such as sandwiches or snacks at a 50 percent discount. With the help of artificial intelligence, Eurowings will acquire data from each flight and continuously adjust the loaded amounts to the actual demand in order to reduce waste.

As part of Lufthansa Group, Eurowings has also committed to reducing its carbon emissions to 50 percent compared to 2019 by 2030 and to becoming carbon-neutral on board and on the ground by 2050. But sustainability does not stop at carbon emissions. Social and societal issues are another important part of Eurowings’ sustainability strategy. Accordingly, the airline also considers social sustainability in the selection of its cooperation partners and products on board.

More choices and sustainability in the Wings Bistro

Eurowings passengers will have a wider selection of vegan and vegetarian snacks and meals in the Wings Bistro going forward – vegan rolls with selected regional ingredients, for example.

Eurowings has been successfully cooperating with the company “share” for several years now. With each bottle of water purchased on board, passengers invest in clean drinking water supply for people in Zimbabwe or Kenya. New on board: the “Lemonaid” brand – each lemonade purchased not only supports fair trade, but also social projects in the countries where its ingredients are originally grown. For those who prefer to enjoy a hot beverage, Eurowings now also offers “ChariTea” brand organic tea. As before, the tried and tested “bring your own cup” concept remains in place – passengers who bring their own cup not only reduce the use of plastic, but also receive a 50-cent discount on the drink they ordered.

New sustainable products in the Wings Shop

With “STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME!”, Eurowings has found another partner that meets strict sustainability criteria for manufacturing its products: the climate-neutral skincare range does not use any synthetic ingredients or animal testing. The purchase of a product supports the “Good Water Projects”.

Passengers will also find “Bracenet” on board: high-quality, upcycled bracelets which are handcrafted in Hamburg from old fishing nets recovered from the ocean.

Beyond this, Eurowings passengers have the opportunity to make an active contribution on board by donating one euro that directly benefits the aid organization “help alliance” when they purchase a meal or product. Each donation provides two children with a full, healthy meal at school each day.

Eurowings’ commitment to more sustainability does not end with the products offered on board. It can also be seen in the production of the new bistro and shop cards: in addition to a shiny new design, they are also more eco-friendly and are made of 100 percent FSC-certified recycled paper. The carbon equivalents emitted during production are completely offset.

Eurowings to add 13 brand-new Airbus A320neos and A321neos in 2022

By far the most efficient and quietest short- and medium-haul jet in the world will soon be flying in Eurowings colors: 50 per cent reduced noise emissions, 15 per cent less fuel consumption with equally reduced CO₂ emissions. These are the impressive facts about the Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft that will be successively delivered to Eurowings from 2022. According to the list price, the order for 13 brand-new aircraft represents an investment of around 1.5 billion dollars. Thus this makes it the most expensive sustainability project in the almost 30-year history of Eurowings.

Germany’s largest holiday airline has been preparing the arrival of the new aircraft generation thoroughly – together with experts from Eurowings Technik – for months.

According to the current planning, the first Airbus A320neo will enter into service with Eurowings in spring 2022. The first aircraft of the larger A321neo model will follow in spring 2023. Eurowings has ordered a total of eight A320neo (180 seats) and five A321neo (232 seats).

50 per cent quieter and 15 per cent less fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Why is the neo the most efficient short- and medium-haul aircraft on the market? With leading technology from Airbus and CFM LEAP, the aircraft has a significantly improved environmental performance compared to the ceo series (current engine option) with 15 per cent less fuel consumption and correspondingly lower CO₂ emissions. The considerable savings are due not only to the new engines but also to the 2.40-metre-long wing tips, the so-called sharklets. This results in aerodynamic advantages that ensure greater efficiency. In addition, the sharklets save up to 800 tons of CO₂ per aircraft per year.

Improved environmental balance through highly efficient engine technology

The suffix “neo” stands for “new engine option”. Eurowings is the first and only airline within the Lufthansa Group to equip all 13 neos with the LEAP (Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion) engine from CFM. The new, significantly larger engines can save another 3,700 tons of CO₂ per aircraft per year. Thanks to the reduced fuel consumption, the neo also achieves around 500 kilometres more range than its predecessor.

Eurowings sets standards in active noise protection

State-of-the-art engines and improved aerodynamics ensure that the 85-decibel maximum sound level contour of an A320neo taking off is about 50 per cent lower compared to the A320ceo. Noise emissions are certified to be approximately 30 decibels below current ICAO limits and represent a significant step forward in noise and emissions reduction compared to today’s fleet. In addition to the new engine technology, all new A320neo and A321neo aircraft are equipped with vortex generators, which have an additional noise-reducing effect.

The introduction of the Airbus A320neo and A321neo into service is part of the many activities and measures taken by Eurowings to noticeably reduce aircraft noise. As part of the Lufthansa Group, Eurowings has been involved for many years in noise research, which creates the basis for successful active noise protection. Only this costly and highly complex research and development work leads to quieter aircraft and engine generations. In addition, Eurowings is involved in the development of optimized flight procedures and routes together with system partners.

Redesigned airspace cabin for even more passenger comfort

The Eurowings A320neo will be configured with 180 seats. The A321neo will have a seating capacity of 232 and will be operated on busy holiday flights, for example to Palma de Mallorca. All neos will include the familiar Eurowings fares: BIZclass, SMART and BASIC. The new baggage compartments in the Airspace Cabin have a 40 per cent larger volume and can even hold 60 per cent more suitcases, as these can be stowed vertically in the compartments. Another highlight is the new flexible lighting system, which adapts to passengers’ biorhythms depending on the phase of the flight and time of day, illuminating the cabin in either warm orange or cooler blue tones.

First Airbus A320neo in the air from spring 2022

From spring 2022, the aircraft will be successively delivered from the factory and added to the Eurowings fleet. According to current planning, Eurowings will receive the first Airbus A320neo in spring 2022 from the Airbus factory in Toulouse. After a final upgrade by Eurowings Technik, the first neo with the registration D-AENA will take off on its inaugural flight a few weeks later. Eurowings is scheduled to receive a total of seven Airbus A320neo aircraft in 2022 according to plan and a further one in 2024. The first of a total of five Airbus A321neo aircraft is expected to follow in spring 2023.

Eurowings cooperates with Smartwings as it opens its new Prague base

Eurowings is cooperating with Smartwings, the leading Czech airline. Both airlines have made a codeshare agreement to market flights. In the future, selected Eurowings connections operating from its new base in Prague will also be offered under Smartwings flight numbers and sold on smartwings.com and its other sales channels. Smartwings customers will thus benefit from the growing number of direct connections offered by the Lufthansa Group airline from the Czech capital. During the Covid crisis, Prague lost numerous direct connections to attractive destinations in Europe that are now being successfully re-established.

The first Eurowings codeshare flights with Smartwings will take off from Prague just a few weeks after Eurowings starts operations in the “Golden City”. By opening a new base in the Czech capital, Eurowings is expanding its services in Central Europe.

As of October 31, 2021, Eurowings in now connecting Prague with 14 new European destinations.

By summer 2022, the Lufthansa Group airline will station three Airbus A320 aircraft, including local crews, in the Czech capital. Flights will be operated by Eurowings Europe, Eurowings’ pan-European flight operation.

Eurowings now also speaks Czech as it opens its new base in Prague

Just in time for the launch of its new base in Prague, Eurowings now welcomes its customers in Czech: Czech travelers can now book flights in their national language at eurowings.com/cz, take advantage of the offers in the Eurowings Savings Calendar or, for example, be inspired by the flight schedule to new destinations – all conveniently in Czech.

Shortly after the booking launch, Germany’s largest vacation airline has already sold many thousands of tickets in the Czech Republic, both in individual seat sales and via local tour operators. Eurowings will open a new base in the Czech capital at the end of October 2021 and initially offer 14 new direct connections for vacationers and business travelers from there.

The new website in Czech once again underscores the airline’s “local touch” in Prague. By summer 2022, Eurowings will station three aircraft in the Czech capital and hire local crews. The jobs advertised at the new base have met with great interest on the Prague job market, with more than 6,000 applications received in recent weeks. The Lufthansa subsidiary, which specializes in low-cost European direct flights, had launched an application process for crews at its eleventh location in late summer to fill around 100 cockpit and cabin positions locally.

The Cologne/Bonn-based company combines Lufthansa’s DNA with a value-for-money concept and innovative customer services: these include industry-leading health and hygiene concepts as well as the option of booking free middle seats in the rear rows of aircraft for as little as ten euros – whether for comfort or hygiene reasons. This option has already been sold more than 50,000 times after a short time and has become a bestseller on Eurowings flights.

Eurowings to fly from Hamburg to Beirut

From November 7, 2021, Eurowings will be launching a new service, flying nonstop for the first time from Hamburg to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Every Sunday, an Airbus A320 will take off from the Hanseatic city at 7 a.m. and land in the Lebanese metropolis at 12.10 p.m. The return journey is on the same day, departing at 1.00 p.m. and landing in Hamburg at 4.35 p.m. From 17 December, the frequency will even be doubled and will be offered on Fridays and Sundays. All flight times are local times.

Eurowings has already been flying from Berlin and Düsseldorf to Beirut since December 2020. Hamburg is now the third direct connection between Germany and Lebanon in the Eurowings route network.

Eurowings and Austrian Airlines optimize connections between Germany and Austria

Eurowings and Austrian Airlines are flying in a new formation and optimizing their intra group offer between Austria and Germany for passengers. Eurowings has taken over the route from Stuttgart to Graz from its Group sister and now flies the route at least five times a week. Eurowings flies to Linz five times a week from its largest location, Düsseldorf. From the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Eurowings will also offer three weekly connections to Graz from 10 January 2022.

From summer 2022, Eurowings will operate even more frequent flights on all three routes and will then fly to Graz and Linz twice daily from Monday to Friday. Passengers will benefit from a large number of attractive connecting flights thanks to the major Eurowings bases in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart.

Austrian Airlines has already taken over the Vienna – Hanover route previously served by Eurowings since the 2021 summer flight schedule. The direct flights are offered with a daily frequency of up to two flights and can be booked as of now. With the permanent start of the rotation to Hanover, Austrian Airlines is strengthening the hub at its home airport of Vienna. The hub connection is ideal for both tourists and business travelers for further connecting flights. Passengers benefit from numerous transfer options, for example to Central and South-Eastern Europe or the Middle East.
