Aloha Air Cargo celebrates five years and moves ahead with the building of a new cargo facility at Honolulu

Aloha Air Cargo (Honolulu) on May 14 celebrated its fifth anniversary. The company is keeping alive the Aloha name.

The cargo airline on May 2 also held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new air cargo facility, which will consolidate existing cargo operations, aircraft maintenance, loading docks, support offices, and customer service operations into an integrated facility on the west side of the airport near the end of Elliott Street and Hale Kinai Road. The facility initiates the kick-off for the Hawaii Airports Modernization Program – part of Governor Neil Abercrombie’s New Day Work Projects. In attendance were Governor Abercrombie, Deputy Airport Director Ford Fuchigami, Kahu Kelekona Bishaw, Aloha Air Cargo Executives and employees, and various key customers and local Hawaii businesses.

Aloha’s cargo facility will act as its primary operational hub, which will coordinate logistics efforts with the company’s Statewide shipping network across all major airports including Lihue, Kauai (LIH), Kahului, Maui (OGG), Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (KOA), and Hilo, Hawaii (ITO).

The groundbreaking is a perfect segue into Aloha Air Cargo’s 5-year anniversary as an independent cargo company which took place on May 14, 2013. The cargo carrier continues to grow and strengthen its core cargo business, while expanding its offerings to become a formidable logistics solutions provider – coming a long way since its much beloved predecessor, Aloha Airlines, closed its doors in March 2008.

The new cargo facility and hangar will be 115,000 square feet, including over 2,400 square feet of refrigerator capacity and five (5) drive-up docks for shippers. Structural considerations were made to incorporate over 31,000 square feet of buildup area under roof for cargo to be sheltered from the elements, wind, sun, and rain. Completion of the facility is projected at the end of first quarter 2014. Until then, operations will not be impacted, and Aloha will continue to serve more than 2,000 local businesses who rely on the cargo carrier to move over 100 million pounds of freight annually into and across the State.

American Airlines and US Airways approve their merger

American Airlines (AMR Corporation) (Dallas/Fort Worth) and US Airways (Phoenix) have approved a stock merger between the two companies. The boards of both airlines met last night to approve the merger according to this report by Reuters. This came after AMR Corporation’s unsecured creditors also approved the merger. An announcement is expected today with all of the details.

US Airways management will be taking control of the new American Airlines. The American Airlines name will be retained for the new company and the US Airways name and brand will be retired.

This is what happened when deregulation upstart America West Airlines (Phoenix) acquired US Airways (Washington) (formerly USAir and Allegheny Airlines) and kept the US Airways name. CEO Doug Parker of US Airways (formerly the CEO of America West Airlines) is expected to become the new CEO of the new American Airlines which is expected to be based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (Doug will be moving).

In reality, this is the story of how America West Airlines in essence acquired two large financially troubled airlines, kept their names and in the process became the largest airline in the world. America West was a product of deregulation. Although the name does not survive today (the people do), America West was founded in 1981 by Ed Beauvais (who later founded Western Pacific Airlines). Operations began on August 1, 1983 as a new airline under deregulation. W. Douglas Parker joined America West in June 1995 and became the CEO in September 2001.
