Great Lakes decides to not fly in Arkansas

Great Lakes Airlines (Cheyenne) has decided it will not pursue Essential Air Service (EAS) flights in four Arkansas cities (El Dorado, Harrison, Hot Springs and Jonesboro). The company has decided to also not serve Jackson, TN and Owensboro, KY. Great Lakes was due to replace Mesa Airlines in Arkansas which pulled out in June 2008. EAS flights are subsidized service to remote U.S. cities usually providing the only service to these communities. The contract will be rebid. Is EAS service dead in the United States?
