United to shop for new long-range aircraft

United Airlines (Chicago), the only U.S. major airline without new aircraft on order, has issued a tender offer (Request for Proposals) to both Airbus and Boeing for new long-range aircraft to replace its aging fleet. A new order could be signed as early as this fall. The company is also assessing the replacement of its narrow-body Boeing 757-200 fleet. The RFP will not include the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747-8.
