Iberia to sub-lease 6 A320s to Vueling Airlines and turn over routes to Air Nostrum and Vueling

Iberia (Madrid) is sub-leasing six Airbus A320s to Vueling Airlines (Barcelona) for eight months. IB is also turning over a number of unspecified European routes to both subsidiary Air Nostrum (Valencia) and Vueling. According to this article by Flightglobal, IB claims it was “forced” into turning over the routes because they are unprofitable under the current situation. IB is retreating from many European, Moroccan and Spanish destinations, starting in March. Although the company and the pilots are negotiating, it is expected the pilots will fight this latest move by the flag carrier, as the union was previously promised these flights would remain with Iberia under a new LCC subsidiary created by IB.
