Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) yesterday inaugurated twice-weekly nonstop flights between Niagara Falls, N.Y., and the Tampa Bay, Florida area via St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE).
As part of its business plan, Allegiant initially launches a new route between two underserved markets with an initial schedule of two flights a week. If the response is good, additional frequencies are added. The formula has worked well for the profitable carrier and it is has only dropped a handful of routes over the years due to a poor response. Usually their flights are the biggest flights serving these small markets and they fly from cold weather locations to lower-cost sunny weather destinations in Florida and the West. They also have very little competition which has made them a success.
