Allegiant’s campaign to get people to fly again

Besides rock-bottom fares, Allegiant Air is touting its aircraft cleaning:

We maintain a comprehensive cleaning program that ensures every aircraft is cleaned and disinfected to the highest possible standard. Exceeding guidance set by the CDC and Airbus, all aircraft undergo a regular schedule of standard and deep cleans. All touch surfaces, from seatbelts and tray tables to galleys and lavatories, are sanitized and disinfected thoroughly during every cleaning.

Adopting hospital-grade standards, we also routinely treat all aircraft with an advanced antimicrobial protectant that kills viruses and bacteria on contact for 14 days. This product is safe and effective, forming a colorless, odorless protective barrier on all surfaces. Our treatment schedule, along with our cleaning practices, far exceeds manufacturer guidelines.

See the video below to learn more about how we use our antimicrobial protectant to help protect the health and safety of you, your loved ones and our team members.

Alitalia resumes direct Rome-Boston services

Alitalia resumed nonstop services between Rome and Boston on July 16. The first Alitalia flight to Boston Logan airport departed from Rome Fiumicino at 10:20 am (local time).

ย

The service to Boston is in addition to the one to New York, resumed in early June, and will be operated three times a week (from Italy every Monday, Thursday and Saturday, from the United States every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday).

ย

In compliance with the current laws, all Alitalia aircraft are sanitised with high-powered sanitizing products every day and, thanks to HEPA filters and vertical circulation, the air on board is not only renewed every three minutes, but it is also 99.7% pure, just like in a sterile medical room. All passengers are also required to complete a self-certification form before boarding, which certifies that they have not had close contact with people diagnosed with Covid-19. In addition, passengers must bring protective masks to be worn from their arrival at the airport and during the flight, taking into account that they have to bring an adequate number of protective masks according to the duration of the flight, since it is necessary to replace the mask with a new one every 4 hours.

British Airways decides to retire its grounded Boeing 747-400 fleet

British Airways has told the BBC it has reached the conclusion that airline traffic will take years to recover and that its grounded Boeing 747-400 fleet will be retired immediately. The 747-400s will not return to service.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm we are proposing to retire our entire 747 fleet with immediate effect,” a BA spokesman told the BBC.

The “Legacy Fleet”:

For the record, the last regularly scheduled revenue flight was operated with G-CIVO on May 11, 2020 as flight BA9116 between Lagos and London (Heathrow).

British Airways issued this statement on July 17, 2020:

Today, Friday, July 17, 2020) British Airways announced, with great sadness, that its fleet of Boeing 747 aircraft, fondly known as โ€˜The Queen of the Skiesโ€™, are likely to have flown their last scheduled commercial service.

After nearly five decades of service and millions of miles flown around the globe, it is proposed that the airlineโ€™s remaining fleet of 31 747-400 aircraft will be retired with immediate effect as a result of the devasting impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the airline and the aviation sector, which is not predicted to recover to 2019 levels until 2023/24.

Just a year ago, British Airways lovingly re-painted four of its jumbo jets in heritage colors to mark the companyโ€™s centenary. The BOAC jet put in a guest appearance with the Red Arrows much to the delight of spectators at the Royal International Air Tattoo, and sadly the aircraft will shortly be heading towards its final resting place alongside 30 others.

The fuel-hungry aircraft were slowly being phased out by British Airways as they reached the end of their working life in order to help meet the companyโ€™s commitment to net zero by 2050. The airline has invested heavily in new, modern long-haul aircraft including six A350s and 32 787s which are around 25 per cent more fuel-efficient than the 747. As part of the airlineโ€™s ยฃ6.5 billion injection into customer experience in recent years, existing aircraft have been refurbished and the brand new arrivals have come into the British Airwaysโ€™ fleet complete with a luxurious business class Club Suite product.

Alex Cruz, British Airwaysโ€™ Chairman and CEO, said: โ€œThis is not how we wanted or expected to have to say goodbye to our incredible fleet of 747 aircraft. It is a heart-breaking decision to have to make. So many people, including many thousands of our colleagues past and present, have spent countless hours on and with these wonderful planes โ€“ they have been at the centre of so many memories, including my very first long-haul flight. They will always hold a special place in our hearts at British Airways.

โ€œWe have committed to making our fleet more environmentally friendly as we look to reduce the size of our business to reflect the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on aviation.ย  As painful as it is, this is the most logical thing for us to propose. The retirement of the jumbo jet will be felt by many people across Britain, as well as by all of us at British Airways.ย  It is sadly another difficult but necessary step as we prepare for a very different future.โ€

BOAC operated its first 747 London to New York service on April 14, 1971 and in July 1989 the first British Airways 747-400, the aircraft type the airline still flies today, took to the skies.

Plane spotters who lined Heathrowโ€™s perimeter fences would watch as the magnificent 747-400 would typically take off at 180 mph and reach cruising speeds in the sky of up to 565 mph.

For the next decade the airline took delivery of 56 more of the aircraft, with its final plane delivered in April 1989. At the time, it was the largest commercial aircraft in the world, and it remained so until the Airbus A380 first took to the skies in 2007.

At one point British Airways operated 57 747-400 aircraft. The original aircraft featured 27 First Class seats and 292 Economy seats. Initially, the upper deck, widely described as the bubble, contained a lounge, with lounge chair seating. It was known as the โ€˜club in the skyโ€™ and the aircraft also played host to the worldโ€™s very first flat bed seat which British Airways pioneered in 1999.

Todayโ€™s aircraft can seat up to 345 customers in four classes โ€“ First, Club World (Business), World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) and World Traveller (Economy).ย  British Airways recently refreshed the interiors of a number of its 747 aircraft which were expected to remain in service for several years to come.

The airlineโ€™s jumbo jets are currently grounded at various locations in the UK and are now only expected to reach heights of 35,000 feet as they make their final journeys.

Facts and stats:

  • Boeing has been manufacturing 747 aircraft for more than 50 years
  • BOAC flew its first 747 flight on April 14, 1971
  • British Airways took delivery of its first 747-400 in July 1989 and its last in April 1999
  • At its height, the airline had a fleet of 57 747-400s
  • British Airways is currently the worldโ€™s biggest operator of 747-400 aircraft
  • The average age of British Airwaysโ€™ fleet is 23 years old
  • The 747-400 has 6 ft high winglets on the tips of its wings to improve efficiency
  • It has 16 main wheels and two landing nose wheels
  • The wings of a 747-400 span 213 ft and are big enough to accommodate 50 parked cars
  • The tail height of 64 ft is equivalent to a six-storey building
  • The 747-400 is 231 ft long

JetBlue and American Airlines announce strategic partnership

JetBlue Airways Corporation and American Airlines Group Inc. today announced a strategic partnership that will create seamless connectivity for travelers in the Northeast and more choice for customers across their complementary domestic and international networks. In addition, the relationship will accelerate each airlineโ€™s recovery as the travel industry adapts to new trends as a result of the pandemic.

The partnership includes an alliance agreement that proposes codeshare and loyalty benefits that will enhance each carrierโ€™s offerings in New Yorkand Boston, providing strategic growth and driving value for customers and crewmembers of both airlines. Customers will experience a number of benefits from the new partnership, including:

  • New and expanded routes: The partnership enables new strategic growth opportunities for both airlines. As a result, American will launch international service from New York(JFK) to Tel Aviv (TLV) and to Athens(ATH) and JFK to Rio De Janeiro (GIG) will return as a daily seasonal route in winter 2021, in addition to continuing to serve popular long-haul destinations like London (LHR) and Madrid (MAD). JetBlue will also accelerate its growth in key cities, bringing its award-winning service to more customers. JetBlue plans to enhance service to strategic markets on the East Coast, West Coast, and in the Southeast, building on JetBlue’s recently announced service between EWR and nine markets, including Mintยฎ service to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO).
  • More choice and loyalty benefits: Through their integrated networks,JetBlue and American will operate reciprocal codeshare flights, giving customers new options with improved schedules, competitive fares and nonstop access to more domestic and international destinations. JetBlue will gain connectivity to more U.S.destinations, a broad global network and an improved frequent flyer proposition, while American will complement JetBlueโ€™s improved and expanded service with new international routes. JetBlue and American loyalty members will also enjoy new benefits while the carriers are exploring additional premium experiences for customers.
  • Seamless experience: Customers will enjoy a seamless experience across both airlines, including the ability to book a single itinerary on either website, convenient connections and an improved on-the-ground experience โ€” resulting in a compelling proposition for both leisure and corporate customers. Additionally, customers seeking more comfort in transcontinental service will have access to both JetBlueโ€™s Mint and Americanโ€™s three-class Transcon service.

โ€œPairing JetBlueโ€™s domestic network with Americanโ€™s international route map creates a new competitive choice in the Northeast, where customers are longing for an alternative to the dominant network carriers,โ€ said Joanna Geraghty, president and chief operating officer, JetBlue. โ€œThis partnership with American is the next step in our plan to accelerate our coronavirus recovery, get our crewmembers and our aircraft flying again, and fuel JetBlueโ€™s growth into the future.โ€

โ€œThis is an incredible opportunity for both of our airlines,โ€ said American Airlines President Robert Isom. โ€œAmerican has a strong history in the Northeast, and weโ€™re proud to partner with JetBlue as the latest chapter in that long history. Together, we can offer customers an industry-leading product in New York and Boston with more flights and more seats to more cities.โ€

New routes from the Northeast

The partnership between American and JetBlue enables sustainable international growth for customers in the Northeast from JFK, which will continue to complement the robust international service from Philadelphia (PHL), for even more options.

Upon the implementation of the alliance agreement, American intends to launch service between JFK and TLV and will introduce new seasonal service between JFK and ATH next summer, to meet the strong local demand. The new nonstop service to TLV and ATH from JFK will be the first long-haul international flights that American has launched from New York in more than four years. American will also operate daily seasonal service to GIG beginning in winter 2021 during the peak summer travel period in Rio de Janeiro. And, once the coronavirus pandemic has ended, the new partnership is certain to facilitate American adding new long-haul markets in Europe, Africa, India and South America

As New Yorkโ€™s Hometown Airlineยฎ, JetBlue plans to increase flying out of New Yorkโ€™s three major airports, bringing its award-winning experience to more customers. Its growth at JFK will be aimed at offering even more connection opportunities to Americanโ€™s growing international network of destinations. From both New York and Boston, JetBlue plans to enhance service to strategic markets, including those on the East Coast, West Coast, and in the Southeast. This will further build on JetBlueโ€™s recently announced growth between EWR and nine markets, including Mint service to LAX and SFO.

More choice and loyalty benefits: Codeshare creates more options for customers

JetBlue and American will begin a new codeshare relationship, giving customers seamless access to more destinations, including international service. The codeshare will introduce JetBlue customers to more than 60 new routes operated by American and will introduce Americanโ€™s customers to more than 130 new routes operated by JetBlue. Codesharing allows customers to book a single itinerary combining flights from both airlines, which will result in a one-stop check-in experience and seamless flight connections from origin to destination.

โ€œJetBlue customers will have more routes and destinations to choose from through American Airlinesโ€™ extensive global network,โ€ said Scott Laurence, head of revenue and planning, JetBlue. โ€œTogether we will offer customers better options than either of us could alone. This partnership enables JetBlue to bring our low fares and great service to even more customers by expanding our presence in our hometown, growing relevance in Boston, and supporting our successful Mint franchise.โ€

โ€œLeisure travel is important to our customers, and JetBlueโ€™s network paired with their award-winning service, are the perfect fit,โ€ said Vasu Raja, Chief Revenue Officer at American Airlines. โ€œBoth airlinesโ€™ customers value access to more destinations, whether itโ€™s a JetBlue customer who wants more direct access to South America from New York, or an American customer who wants more robust service to Florida. Together, we can give our customers the best of both worlds.โ€

Exceptional experience: Industry-leading products and enhancements to existing service

JetBlue and American will offer customers more options on Transcon service from New York to the West Coast. Americanโ€™s popular three-class service on the Airbus A321T will join JetBlue with its Mint premium experience and thoughtful core seating.

The premium experience will also be expanded to the fleet. American intends to operate more dual-class regional aircraft featuring first class beginning next year, providing the premium experience customers in the Northeast prefer.

JetBlue is not joining oneworldยฎ or the AA/IAG Atlantic Joint Business Agreement and will continue with plans to independently launch and operate transatlantic flights to London in 2021.

The implementation of the alliance agreement and other arrangements described herein is subject to the negotiation and execution of definitive documentation and governmental review.
