Bighorn Airways’ unique DHC-8-100 Dash 8 smokejumper aircraft is fighting fires in the West again this season

Bighorn Airways is located in Sheridan, Wyoming, at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. The company was founded in 1947 with three airplanes performing aerial spray operations for local ranchers.

Today, through hard work, passion, and perseverance, Bighorn Airways has grown into Wyoming’s largest and most complete aviation service provider. The company provides a variety of aviation services, including; on-demand aircraft and helicopter charter, aerial spraying, full Fixed Base Operator (FBO) services, aircraft refueling, maintenance, avionics service, and contract services.

The company also specializes in ithe support of forest firefighters that plagues the western states each fire season.

This fire season the company will again use its unique DHC-8-100 (N990BH) “smokejumper” Dash 8 aircraft in support of fighting forest fires in the western United States.

“Smokejumpers” are firefighters that parachute into wildfire areas to provide the initial fire suppression response.

The airline has a fleet of four Dornier 228s, five CASA C-212s and one de Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 in support of smoke-jumping operations.

N990BH was specially configured to transport the smokejumpers with their gear.

It is a unique use of the Dash 8.
