Arik Air orders two Boeing 747-8 Intercontinentals

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) and Boeing announced a deal for two 747-8 Intercontinental airplanes. The order is valued atย $635 millionย at list prices and was previously attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing’s website.

The order was announced during a signing ceremony at the Corporate Council forย Africa’sย 8th Biennial U.S.-Africa Business Summit inย Washington, D.C.

Arik Air isย Nigeria’s fastest-growing privately owned airline operating a large fleet of Boeing Next-Generation 737s and serves more than 22 domestic, six regional and three long-haul routes. The airline plans to use the 747-8 on its key long-haul routes.

Arik Air has an aircraft grounded in Dakar

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) is going through a tough financial period. According to this report by the Daily Independent, the Nigerian carrier has been unable to pay the Senegalese authority airport charges for an aircraft that has been grounded in Dakar since July 13. As a result, over passengers have been stranded.

Arik Air enters into a JV with the government of Sierra Leone to form Leone Airways

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) has signed a joint venture deal with the government of Sierra Leone. Arik will operate for the new flag carrier called Leone Airways (Freetown). Arik will also operate its Boeing 737-800s on the Freetown-London (Heathrow) route on a wet lease basis starting in July 2011.

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) will launch a new route on November 26 connecting London’s Heathrow Airport with Abuja. The new route will be operated five times a week with Boeing 737-800s.

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) will add New York (JFK) and the LOS-JFK route (three times weekly) with Airbus A340-500s starting on November 30.

 

Arik Air adds Ilorin, service to Lagos and Abuja

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) will add Ilorin in Nigeria on October 25 with domestic service to both Lagos and Abuja.

Arik Air (Lagos) may have to change its “Wings of Nigeria” sub-titles if they follow through on their current threat to move to another country. Arik Air is upset about the Nigerian government’s order to move from the domestic terminal at Lagos to the international terminal.
