British Airways invests in Zeroavia

British Airways has made this announcement:

ZeroAvia plane on tarmac

  • British Airways is investing in ZeroAvia to propel its journey towards a zero emissions future
  • It comes just weeks after British Airways announced a partnership with ZeroAvia through parent company IAGโ€™s Hangar 51 accelerator program to explore how hydrogen-powered aircraft can play a leading role in the future of sustainable flying
  • Investing in new technologies like zero emissions hydrogen-powered aircraft forms part of the airlineโ€™s longer-term plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050
  • ZeroAvia recently completed the worldโ€™s first hydrogen-electric fuel cell powered flight of a commercial-grade aircraft as it aims to accelerate the worldโ€™s transition to sustainable aviation

British Airways has invested in ZeroAvia โ€“ a leading innovator in decarbonizing commercial aviation โ€“ in an effort to accelerate the development of 50+ seater aircraft capable of running on zero emissions hydrogen-electric power.

British Airways and a group of investors includingย Horizons Ventures,ย Breakthrough Energy Ventures,ย Ecosystem Integrity Fund,ย Summa Equity,ย Shell Ventures, andย SYSTEMIQ have invested a total of $24.3m USD, which will enable ZeroAvia to launch a new development program to further demonstrate the credibility of its technology and accelerate the development of a larger hydrogen-electric engine, capable of flying further and using larger aircraft as soon as 2026.

ZeroAvia says it could achieve commercialization for its hydrogen-electric power as early as 2024, with flights of up to 500-miles in up to 20-seater aircraft. With this new investment, ZeroAvia expects to have 50+ seat commercial aircraft in operation in five yearsโ€™ time and it accelerates the companyโ€™s vision of powering a 100-seat single-aisle aircraft by 2030.

This new investment reflects the importance British Airways is placing on sustainability and supports the airlineโ€™s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through a series of short, medium and long-term initiatives. In addition to exploring and investing in the growth of these new longer-term technologies, the airline is also investing in the development of sustainable aviation fuels, flying more fuel-efficient aircraft and exploring the use of carbon capture technology.

In September 2020, ZeroAvia achieved the world’sย first hydrogen-electric flightย of a commercial-grade aircraft. Additionally, the company just completed aย ground simulation of the complete power profileย for its upcoming first cross-country flight. The ground test demonstrated a full battery shutdown in-flight using the company’s unique fuel cell powertrain configuration, allowing for complete removal of the battery system in the next configuration of the powertrain.

British Airwaysโ€™ investment in ZeroAvia follows a recent partnership between the two companies announced at the end of last year. The airline teamed up with ZeroAvia through its parent company International Airlines Groupโ€™s (IAG) Hangar 51 accelerator program in a project to explore how hydrogen-powered aircraft can play a leading role in the future of sustainable flying. The project identified economic, network and consumer appeal advantages as well as clear environmental benefits.

  • The airline will be expanding this trial to include more destinations over the coming weeks and aims to add this functionality to its mobile app
  • The trial runs alongside another British Airwaysโ€™ trial of the health passport VeriFLY on flights to the US and Canada, alongside all UK inbound flights

British Airwaysโ€™ customers eligible to travel to India are now able to upload their negative Covid-19 test results and other travel declaration forms directly into their booking on the airlineโ€™s websiteย ba.com, in advance of travel. The new initiative is being trialled as part of the airlineโ€™s efforts to simplify the departure process as it prepares for the return of international travel.

The trial, which is running on all flights from London to India, will certify that customers have the correct documentation needed for their flight before they arrive at the airport, allowing them to check-in online and avoid queuing in the terminal.

Three days before they are due to depart, customers receive an email directing them to the โ€˜Manage My Bookingโ€™ function onย ba.comย where they can find the relevant entry requirements, including a negative Covid-19 test result and a digital declaration form. The customer will then upload each document via โ€˜Manage My Bookingโ€™ which will be certified by the airline within six hours to ensure they meet the entry requirements.

British Airways aims to roll this trial out to more destinations over the coming weeks and is also working to add this functionality for those destinations to its British Airways app. This will enable customers to securely upload the documentation* for their booking directly from their mobile device, which could include negative Covid test results and / or proof of a vaccination if it is required by the government of the destination.

Sean Doyle, British Airwaysโ€™ Chief Executive Officer, said: โ€œAt British Airways we are preparing for the meaningful return to international travel in the coming months. This means doing everything we can to simplify the journey for our customers, allow them to travel with confidence and create the best possible seamless, frictionless experience in a new Covid era.

British Airways adds its second sustainable aviation fuel partnership

British Airways has made this announcement:

  • British Airways is investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology provider and SAF producer LanzaJet as the company builds its first commercial scale plant in Georgia, USA
  • British Airways will purchase SAF from LanzaJetโ€™s US plant to power a number of the airlineโ€™s flights from late 2022
  • Deal also involves LanzaJet conducting early stage planning for a potential large scale commercial SAF biorefinery in the UK
  • The announcement is in addition to British Airwaysโ€™ existing partnership with Velocys to build a sustainable aviation fuel plant in the UK, which could produce SAF from 2025
  • Investing to enable the commercial development of SAF forms part of the airlineโ€™s medium-term initiatives to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050
  • The airline is delivering a range of short, medium and long-term initiatives to decarbonize and achieve net zero by 2050

British Airways is to power future flights with sustainable aviation fuel produced from sustainably-sourced ethanol, as part of a new partnership with sustainable jet fuel company LanzaJet.

The partnership, which reflects the importance the airline is placing on sustainability and its continued investment in sustainable aviation fuel, will see British Airways invest in LanzaJetโ€™s first commercial scale Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Georgia, USA and acquire cleaner burning sustainable aviation fuel from the plant. It expects the fuel to be available to power a number of its flights by the end of 2022. In addition, the partnership will involve LanzaJet implementing early stage planning and design for a potential commercial facility for British Airways in the UK.

The plant in Georgia is due to begin construction this year. It will convert sustainable ethanol (a chemical compound widely blended with petrol to reduce its carbon intensity) into sustainable aviation fuel using a patented chemical process.

The fuel produced at the plant will deliver a reduction of more than 70 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fossil jet fuel, equivalent to taking almost 27,000 petrol or diesel cars off the road each year.

The sustainable aviation fuel produced by LanzaJet is made via the LanzaJetโ„ข Alcohol to Jet (AtJ) Process, which can use any source of sustainable ethanol, including, but not limited to, ethanol made from non-edible agricultural residues such as wheat straw and recycled pollution. Commercialization of AtJ has been years in the making, starting with the partnership between LanzaTech (which launched LanzaJet in June 2020) and the U.S Department of Energyโ€™s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

The development and use of sustainable aviation fuels is a major focus for British Airways and forms part of the airlineโ€™s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through a series of short, medium and long-term initiatives. The airline has an existing partnership with sustainable fuels technology company Velocys, with the goal of building a facility to convert household and commercial waste into renewable sustainable jet fuel in the UK. Fuel could be produced by 2025. British Airwaysโ€™ parent company, International Airlines Group, will be investing US$400 million in sustainable aviation fuel in the next 20 years.

Sean Doyle, British Airwaysโ€™ CEO, said:

โ€œDespite the crisis in global aviation, it is vital for our future that we continue to address climate change and we remain focused on playing our part to reduce the impact we have on the planet. For the last 100 years we have connected Britain with the world and the world with Britain, and to ensure our success for the next 100, we must do this sustainably.

โ€œProgressing the development and commercial deployment of sustainable aviation fuel is crucial to decarbonizing the aviation industry and this partnership with LanzaJet shows the progress British Airways is making as we continue on our journey to net zero.

โ€œFollowing the successful start-up of the Georgia plant, we hope to then deploy the technology and SAF production capacity in the UK. The UK has the experience and resources needed to become a global leader in the deployment of such sustainable aviation fuel production facilities, and we need Government support to drive decarbonization and accelerate the realization of this vision.โ€

Jimmy Samartzis, LanzaJet CEO, said:

โ€œOur world is at a crossroads on climate change and our industry is at inflection point, prepared to accelerate the energy transition that is needed. We are delighted to welcome British Airways to the LanzaJet family. Low-cost, sustainable fuel options are critical for the future of the aviation sector and the LanzaJet process offers the most flexible feedstock solution at scale, recycling wastes and residues into SAF that allows us to keep fossil jet fuel in the ground. British Airways has long been a champion of waste to fuels pathways especially with the UK Government. With the right support for waste-based fuels, the UK would be an ideal location for commercial scale LanzaJet plants. We look forward to continuing the dialogue with BA and the UK Government in making this a reality, and to continuing our support of bringing the Prime Ministerโ€™s Jet Zero vision to life.โ€

British Airways has a clear roadmap to meet its net zero 2050 target. In the short-term, the airline is improving its operational efficiency, flying more fuel-efficient aircraft and introducing carbon offset and removal projects. The airline currently offsets emissions on all flights within the UK and offers customers the option to voluntarily offset their emissions if traveling further afield. In the medium- to long-term, in addition to the airlineโ€™s investment in the development of sustainable aviation fuel, it is also looking at technological solutions such as zero emissions hydrogen aircraft and carbon capture technology.

LanzaJet was launched in June 2020 and is a spin-off from leading biotech company LanzaTech. British Airways will be joining LanzaTech, Mitsui and Suncor Energy as investors in LanzaJet. With the addition of British Airways, LanzaJet now plans to develop a further four larger scale plants operating from 2025, producing a pipeline of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel made from sustainable feedstocks, to support and enable the global decarbonization of the aviation sector. Itโ€™s hoped that some or all of these plants will be built in the UK subject to improved Government policy support for waste-based sustainable aviation fuels.

British Airways and LanzaTech are also part of the Jet Zero Council, a partnership between government and industry to drive forward the UK Governmentโ€™s net zero-emission ambitions for the aviation and aerospace sector, with a focus on sustainable aviation fuels.

British Airways becomes the first UK airline to trial the use of mobile travel health passport

British Airways has made this announcement:

VeriFLY and BA

  • British Airways is working with joint business and oneworld partner, American Airlines to trial the new app
  • Trial begins from February 4, 2021 on all transatlantic routes between London and the US

British Airways today announces that it will begin trialling a new travel health app, VeriFLY, with customers who are eligible to travel between London and the US from February 4.

The new digital health travel passport, which can be downloaded to a mobile device, is designed to offer peace of mind before travel by checking customers meet the entry requirements of their destination by providing digital health document verification and confirming eligibility. Use of the VeriFLY app will be optional and customers will also continue to be able to evidence they meet the US entry requirements at check-in.

The trial follows the recent announcement thatย American Airlines, British Airwaysโ€™ joint business and oneworld partner, now allows all customers to use VeriFLY when they are travelling to the US from all international destinations. Since American became the first airline to use VeriFLY in November for selected routes*, thousands of customers have travelled using the app, with many providing positive feedback to the airline on its ease of use.

British Airways is the first airline in the UK to trial the use of a mobile travel health passport for customers travelling from London. It will also be the only airline outside the US to offer its customers the opportunity to trial VeriFLY.

Sean Doyle, British Airwaysโ€™ CEO said: โ€œAlthough flying is currently restricted, it is essential we do as much as we can now to help those who are eligible to fly and prepare to help our customers navigate the complexities around changing global entry requirements when the world re-opens.

โ€œWe remain focused and committed to finding user-friendly, evidence-based solutions to make journeys as seamless they can be. Through these trials, we hope to provide travellers and governments on both sides of the Atlantic with the tools and the reassurance they need to make safe travel possible.โ€

Robert Isom, American Airlinesโ€™ President said: โ€œWe are pleased to be working hand-in-hand again with our partner, British Airways, to make transatlantic travel as seamless as possible for those who are permitted to fly by utilising the latest in digital technology.โ€

VeriFLY has been pioneered by private software company, Daon, which also works with some of the worldโ€™s leading banking and credit card companies. The software will allow people to combine travel verification documents and Covid-19 test results in one place, ensuring travellers are fully compliant with the entry requirements for their destination before leaving home. Certified customers will be fast-tracked through the airport where specially designated desks will be available for check in.

VeriFLY can be downloaded to a customerโ€™s mobile device with ease from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store. After creating a secure profile, the platform prompts customers to confirm their flight information, upload details of a negative Covid-19 test result and any other essential documentation. The software confirms the test matches the countryโ€™s regulations with a simple โ€˜Passโ€™ or โ€˜Failโ€™ message. VeriFLY will also provide users with reminders once the credential has expired.

The British Airways VeriFLY trial will begin from February 4, 2021 for customers travelling from London to all US routes currently operating** and will be updated to ensure conformance with the latest UK government requirement for a declaration around the reason for travel once the airline has clarity on the legislation.

Phase two, which will follow in the near future, will extend to cover customers travelling to the UK from the US across both carriers. This will make British Airways and American Airlines the first transatlantic partners to offer a digital solution for eligible customers flying to the UK.

British Airways is also simultaneously conducting aย testing trialย with American Airlines and oneworld on some routes from the US to the UK. The results of the trial will be shared with Oxford University, the academic partners and with governments on both sides of the Atlantic.

โ€œThe commemorative BOAC case that we have created together, is the perfect celebration of travel and style โ€“ two values that have inspired the past and indeed the future of Globe-Trotter.โ€

BBC: COVID-19: More than 40 countries ban UK arrivals

From BBC:

“More than 40 countries have banned UK arrivals because of concerns about the spread of a new variant of coronavirus.”

UK Government issued this statement:

COVID-19 travel guidance

Following identification of a new variant of the virus, international travel from your area may be increasingly restricted because of domestic regulations. Different rules apply inย England,ย Scotland,ย Walesย andย Northern Ireland. For example, those in Tier 4 areas in England will not be permitted to travel abroad apart from limited exceptions, such as work purposes. Follow all the rules that apply to you.

Other countries have closed borders, and may restrict movement or bring in new quarantine rules with little warning.ย Check our adviceย on things to consider, and be prepared to stay overseas longer than planned.

Before you return to the UK you mustย provide your journey and contact details. Also check if you need toย self isolate.

British Airways issued this statement:

We are operating a reduced and dynamic schedule as we respond to the current situation.

Please check theย UK Government websiteย for the latest travel updates and any new restrictions for your destination.

If your flight is cancelled we will contact you, but please also check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport and ensure your contact details are up to date in โ€˜Manage My Bookingโ€™.

UK Prime Minister announces Tier 4: ‘Stay At Home’ alert level in response to new COVID variant

This is likely to affect air travel to and from the United Kingdom:

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, has announced tougher restrictions for large parts of South East England with a new Tier 4: โ€˜Stay at Homeโ€™ alert level.

The decision follows a rapid rise in infections attributed to the rapid spread of a new variant of COVID-19.

Based on preliminary modelling data, the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) now consider that the new strain can spread significantly more quickly and could increase R by 0.4 or more. New and existing data will continue to be analysed as we learn more about the variant.

As a result, the following areas will move from Tier 3 to Tier 4:

  • Kent, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey (excluding Waverley), Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth, Rother and Hastings;
  • London (all 32 boroughs and the City of London); and
  • the East of England (Bedford, Central Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Hertfordshire, Essex excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring).

In Tier 4 the โ€˜Stay At Homeโ€™ message will be put in law. As previously, there will be exemptions – including travelling for work or education, for childcare purposes, and for exercise.

People should not enter or leave Tier 4 areas, and Tier 4 residents must not stay overnight away from home. Where people cannot work from home, they should still travel to work, for example in the construction and manufacturing sectors.

Non-essential retail, indoor leisure [such as swimming pools and gyms], indoor entertainment [such as cinemas, bowling alleys and casinos], and personal care sectors [such as nail bars, barbers and hairdressers] must all close.

Tighter social contact restrictions will also be introduced, meaning one person can meet with one other person in an outside public space. Rules on support bubbles and childcare bubbles will remain as currently, and communal worship can continue to take place.

For the clinically extremely vulnerable, the same advice as in November applies in Tier 4 areas. This says that those who are clinically extremely vulnerable, which includes people with certain types of cancer, people on immunosuppression therapy, and people with severe respiratory conditions, shouldnโ€™t go to work and should limit time outside the home, and take exercise outside at less busy times.

The Prime Minister, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Scientific Advisor and Cabinet agreed that while no-one wants to impose these tougher measures, the new variant has significantly changed the current landscape and urgent action is needed to protect the NHS and save lives.

Throughout the pandemic, the evidence has shown that rising rates will lead to increased hospital admissions, risking intolerable pressure on the NHS in the toughest winter months.

There is no current evidence to suggest the new variant causes a higher mortality rate, that it affects vaccines and treatments, or that testing will not detect cases.

The Prime Minister also said that given the risk the new variant poses, the Christmas bubble policy will no longer apply in Tier 4.

For Tiers 1, 2 and 3, Christmas bubbles can continue with up to three households able to meet, but for one day only on Christmas Day.

The government is also issuing new travel advice. Although the new variant is concentrated in Tier 4 areas, it is present at lower levels around the country.

People under Tier 1, 2, and 3 restrictions should stay local. People should not travel into or out of Tier 4 areas and those in Tier 4 areas will not be permitted to travel abroad, apart from limited exceptions including work and education.

Tier 4 rules will be reviewed on 30 December, as part of the wider review of all restrictions.

Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty said:

As announced on Monday, the UK has identified a new variant of Covid-19 through Public Health Englandโ€™s genomic surveillance.

As a result of the rapid spread of the new variant, preliminary modelling data and rapidly rising incidence rates in the South East, the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) now consider that the new strain can spread more quickly.

We have alerted the World Health Organisation and are continuing to analyse the available data to improve our understanding.

There is no current evidence to suggest the new strain causes a higher mortality rate or that it affects vaccines and treatments although urgent work is underway to confirm this.

Given this latest development it is now more vital than ever that the public continue to take action in their area to reduce transmission.

The partnership forms part of IAGโ€™s industry leading Hangar 51 accelerator program, which works with start-ups and scale-ups from around the world, providing them with an opportunity to develop and test their products on real world business challenges on a global scale. At the end of the program, research and learnings from the process will be shared and the ZeroAvia and Hangar 51 teams will consider how the partnership will progress longer term.

Sean Doyle, CEO of British Airways, said:ย  โ€œBritish Airways is committed to a sustainable future and ย achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In the short-term this means improving our operational efficiency and introducing carbon offset and removal projects, while in the medium to longer term weโ€™re investing in the development of sustainable aviation fuel and looking at how we can help accelerate the growth of new technologies such as zero emissions hydrogen-powered aircraft.โ€

Louise Evans, Director of External Communications & Sustainability said:ย โ€œWe are very excited to partner with ZeroAvia and get a glimpse of a zero-emissions future using hydrogen powered aircraft. During the partnership, as well as assessing the environmental advantages of the technology, we will also be exploring the operational, commercial and customer experience improvements that can be achieved.โ€

Sergey Kiselev, ZeroAviaโ€™s Head of Europe, said: โ€œZeroAviaโ€™s mission is to accelerate the worldโ€™s transition to truly zero emissions flight and we believe hydrogen is the best way to quickly and practically achieve this. Earlier this year, we proved that passengers will soon be able to board an emissions free, hydrogen-powered aircraft for commercial services. In the years to come, we will scale that technology up to power larger aircraft over longer distances.

โ€œWe have found that in addition to improving the sustainability of flight, which is vital, hydrogen-electric technology has the potential to lower operating costs and improve the in-flight passenger experience. We are delighted to be working with British Airways, one of the worldโ€™s iconic airlines, and the Hangar 51 program to explore how hydrogen-electric aircraft can power the fleet of the future. That promising future is closer than ever.โ€

In 2021, ZeroAvia expects to further demonstrate the credibility of its technology at longer ranges and using larger aircraft. The company expects to achieve the commercialization of hydrogen-electric power for aircraft as early as 2023 with flights of up to 500-miles in up to 20-seater aircraft. By 2027, it plans to have powerplants in service capable of powering commercial flights of over 500-miles in aircraft with up to 100 seats and by 2030 more than 1,000-miles in aircraft with 100+ seats.

Both British Airways and ZeroAvia are part of the Jet Zero Council, a partnership between government and industry to drive forward the UK Governmentโ€™s net zero-emission ambitions for the aviation and aerospace sector.
