JetBlue brings iPad Pro on board for pilots starting this summer

JetBlue Airways today announced it has begun introducing the new iPad Pro powered by Apple’s M1 chip to the airlineโ€™s pilots.

JetBlue was one of the first domestic airlines to use digital documentation in the cockpit, and continues to be a leader in the industry bringing innovative tools into operation. The new iPad Pro keeps JetBlue pilots on the cutting edge of technology and provides safety-critical functions for all JetBlue crew members. iPad has become an essential tool on board โ€“ from loading operational tracking apps, hosting system maintenance checks, checking real-time weather patterns to avoid turbulence, and accessing procedures and manuals.

JetBlue first received Federal Aviation Administration approval to give iPads to all pilots in 2013, which enabled more real-time capabilities in the cockpit. Since then, the airline continues to trust iPad to provide everything pilots need at the touch of their fingertips, even at 35,000 feet in the air.

iPad Pro is the right fit for the cockpit, with its thin, light design and large, bright Liquid Retina display. The new iPad Pro features the industry-leading M1 chip, which offers next-level performance when pilots are running more than a dozen apps throughout the duration of the flight. iPad Proโ€™s fast 5G capabilities delivers better performance and access to next-generation download and upload speeds.

โ€œNot only will the new iPad Pro with M1 take our pilots to the next level of advanced technology, but also future-proof JetBlue with top-of-the-line hardware for years to come,โ€ said Captain Chuck Cook, director communications, navigation, surveillance and technical programs.

In the coming months, JetBlue will provide iPad Pro to new incoming pilots, and will replace older models in use over time.

JetBlue expands use of sustainable aviation fuel as part of its strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040

JetBlue Airways has entered into a new relationship with World Energy and World Fuel Services for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). JetBlueโ€™s LAX flights using SAF started this month. This increase in the airlineโ€™s usage of SAF includes 1.5 million gallons of blended SAF a year for at least three years, accounting for approximately five percent of JetBlueโ€™s LAX fuel.

Renewable fuel options will play a critical role in the aviation industryโ€™s transition to lower-carbon operations. This is the latest step for JetBlue as the airline works to achieve its ambitious and comprehensive environmental social governance (ESG) targets, including a goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Last year, JetBlue became the first majorย U.S.ย airline to achieve carbon neutrality on all domestic flying, today primarily through carbon offsets while the SAF industry continues to grow, and lower-carbon technologies to reduce direct emissions.

โ€œJetBlue is facing climate change head on and preparing our business for a new climate reality,โ€ said Sara Bogdan, director of sustainability and environmental social governance. โ€œSustainable aviation fuel is one of the most promising ways to rapidly reduce air travel emissions and help our industry move toward our net-zero goals. We are focused on growing our use of sustainable aviation fuel to replace conventional fossil-based jet fuel in our focus cities as it becomes available. It has not historically had the same policy support as other low carbon fuels and comes at a premium today. Weโ€™re excited by the prospect of additional policy support to help grow and scale sustainable aviation fuel, helping to usher in a lower-carbon future for aviation.โ€

This follows JetBlueโ€™s move to fuel flights fromย San Franciscoย International Airport (SFO) with SAF with another fuel provider. World Energy, a zero-now solutions provider for transport and the industryโ€™s first commercial-scale producer of SAF, is supplying JetBlue fuel at LAX from its facility inย Paramount, Calif.ย JetBlue is World Energyโ€™s secondย U.S.ย commercial airline partner to incorporate SAF into its regular operations. Made from inedible agricultural waste, World Energyโ€™s SAF is certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials to reduce emissions by up to 80 percent per gallon before being blended with petroleum jet fuel. Delivery of the fuel into LAX will be managed by World Fuel Services, JetBlueโ€™s fuel management company.

โ€œJetBlue is taking aggressive action utilizing tools available today to deliver on their net-zero carbon emissions goals,โ€ said Bryan Sherbacow, chief commercial officer, World Energy. โ€œExpanding commercial use of sustainable aviation fuel is critical in changing the industryโ€™s carbon outcomes. World Energy is excited to partner with JetBlue in fueling their success in transitioning to a zero-carbon aviation industry.โ€

โ€œWe are honored to support JetBlueโ€™s comprehensive sustainability strategy through our steady supply of sustainable aviation fuel,โ€ said Brad Hurwitz, senior vice president โ€“ supply and trading, World Fuel Services. โ€œSince 2014, World Fuel Services has delivered more than 22.1 million gallons of cleaner-burning, low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel. With World Energy, we continue to focus on increasing sustainable aviation fuel availability and supply chain efficiency for aviation.โ€

JetBlue views robust oversight of key ESG issues as good for business and for generating long-term value, and recognizes that customers expect clean, efficient, and affordable travel. Thatโ€™s why JetBlue is helping lead the path in sustainable aviation.

LAX is one of JetBlueโ€™s most successful and busiest markets, climbing to 40 flights per day to 23 markets this summer, allowing significant growth opportunities for the airlineโ€™s network. With support from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), JetBlue plans to embark on meaningful expansion at LAX over the next five years โ€“ both domestically and internationally into multiple markets with plans to reach about 70 flights per day by 2025.

โ€œLos Angeles World Airports (LAWA) is committed to achieving ambitious sustainability goals, including net-zero carbon emissions and 100% renewable energy for LAX facilities by 2045,โ€ said Justin Erbacci, chief executive officer, LAWA. โ€œWe are thrilled that JetBlue is supporting this bold agenda to help combat climate change through the use of sustainable aviation fuel.โ€

JetBlueโ€™s Decarbonization Strategy

Carbon neutrality on its domestic flights is just one way JetBlue is preparing for a changing climate and ensuring a more sustainable business for its crewmembers, customers, shareholders and communities. JetBlueโ€™s carbon reduction efforts focus on decreasing emissions through fuel-efficient operations and aircraft, growing usage of SAF, and supporting the next generation of low-emissions aircraft technologies.

Earlier this year the airline announced emission reduction targets, including efforts to:

Reduce direct emissions:

  • Decrease aircraft emissions 25 percent per available seat mile (ASM) by 2030 from 2015 levels, excluding offsets

Increase usage of sustainable energy:

  • Convert 10 percent of total jet fuel to be from blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030
  • Convert 40 percent of three main ground service equipment vehicle types to electric by 2025 and 50 percent by 2030

JetBlueโ€™s focus on climate leadershipย โ€“ JetBlueโ€™s environmental social governance (ESG) strategy focuses on issues that have the potential to impact its business and the industry in the long-term. Customers, crewmembers and community, as well as stakeholders, are key to JetBlue’s climate and sustainability strategy. Demand from these groups for responsible service is one of the motivations to further reduce the airlineโ€™s environmental impact. Shareholders, including many crewmembers, have demanded that JetBlueโ€™s ESG strategy benefit stakeholders and the airlineโ€™s financial position. Tying ESG to its treasury function, including cash investments and a sustainability-linked loan with some terms dependent on the airlineโ€™s ESG scores, further demonstrates JetBlueโ€™s commitment to combat climate change.

And for ease of doing business, members will earn miles the same way they do today on American, based on ticket price*.

Members from both programs will also be able toย earn elite qualifying currencyย on these trips. There are more than 1,000 ways toย earn milesย with Americanโ€™s partners โ€” from car rentals and hotel stays to dining out and using credit cards.

AAdvantage member Miles per dollar spent
AAdvantage 5 miles/dollar spent
AAdvantage Gold 7 miles/dollar spent
AAdvantage Platinum 8 miles/dollar spent
AAdvantage Platinum Pro 9 miles/dollar spent
AAdvantage Executive Platinum 11 miles/dollar spent

*Based on ticket price (includes base fare plus carrier-imposed fees; excludes government-imposed taxes and fees).

Since theย announcementย of the Northeast Alliance last year, customers have already benefited from better options as American and JetBlue introduced 57 new routes from the northeast, as well as more than 100 codeshare flights. The carriers have worked on enhanced schedules in several northeast markets, so customers can choose to fly when itโ€™s most convenient. The alliance has also elevated the premium experience when traveling between the northeast โ€” New York and Boston โ€” and Los Angeles and San Francisco with lie-flat seats readily available.

JetBlue reports a GAAP pre-tax loss ofย $347 millionย in the first quarter

Airline Color Scheme - Introduced 2019 (Spotlight)

JetBlue Airways Corporation today reported its results for the first quarter 2021:

  • Reported GAAP loss per share of ($0.78) in the first quarter of 2021 compared to a diluted earnings per share ofย $0.14ย in the first quarter of 2019. Adjusted loss per share was ($1.48)(1)ย in the first quarter of 2021 versus adjusted diluted earnings per share ofย $0.16(1)ย in the first quarter of 2019. Note A to this earnings release includes the GAAP to Non-GAAP reconciliation between reported and adjusted diluted earnings per share.
  • GAAP pre-tax loss ofย ($347) millionย in the first quarter of 2021, compared to a pre-tax income ofย $58 millionย in the first quarter of 2019. Excluding one-time items, adjusted pre-tax loss ofย ($636) million(1)ย in the first quarter of 2021 versus adjusted pre-tax income ofย $70 million(1)ย in the first quarter of 2019.

Operational Highlights from the First Quarter

  • First quarter 2021 revenue declined 61% year over two as a result of the impact of COVID-19. The decline is on the lower end of our prior expectations for the quarter of a 61 to 64% decline year over two, and represents a six-point sequential improvement quarter over quarter, mainly driven by sustained momentum in booking trends for leisure travel beginning in mid-February.
  • Reduced first quarter 2021 capacity by 41% year over two, in line with our original planning assumption, as a result of actions taken to capture improving demand, manage cash burn and protect liquidity.
  • Operating expenses declined 43% year over two. Excluding special items, adjusted operating expenses declined 26%(1)ย year over two, which is better than our planning assumption of a decrease of 25% year over two, despite higher fuel prices. The results were driven by capacity reductions and initiatives taken to reduce variable and fixed costs.
  • Resulting primarily from the actions taken, JetBlueโ€™s Adjusted Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, Amortization and Special Items (Adjusted EBITDA) in the first quarter of 2021 wasย ($458) million(1), better than the ($490) toย ($540) millionย range previously expected.

Balance Sheet and Liquidity

  • JetBlue ended the first quarter of 2021 with approximatelyย $3.2 billionย in unrestricted cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, or 40% of 2019 revenue.
  • JetBlue repaidย $94 millionย in regularly scheduled debt and finance lease obligations and repaid the fully drawnย $550 millionย revolving credit facility during the first quarter of 2021.
  • JetBlue has taken the following measures in the first quarter to manage liquidity:
    • Raised approximatelyย $750 millionย with a convertible debt offering transaction.
    • Continued to achieve significant savings through aggressive capacity management and executing actions to manage our fixed and variable cost structure.
    • Redeployed assets to capture short-term, tactical cash generation opportunities and make long term network investments in our focus cities.

Fuel Expense and Hedging

The realized fuel price in the first quarter 2021 wasย $1.72ย per gallon, a 16% decline versus first quarter 2019 realized fuel price ofย $2.05.

As of April 27 2021, JetBlue has not entered into forward fuel derivative contracts to hedge its fuel consumption for the second quarter of 2021. Based on the forward curve as of April 16th, JetBlue expects an average all-in price per gallon of fuel ofย $1.87ย in the second quarter of 2021.

Our Recovery Plan and Actions Taken to Position JetBlue for Future Success

โ€œAlthough our EPS remains in negative territory, we have seen meaningful progress in the demand recovery, and have started to gain momentum from the groundwork we have laid to emerge from the crisis as a stronger JetBlue,โ€ said Robin Hayes, JetBlueโ€™s Chief Executive Officer.

โ€œLooking back to our work from 2020, I could not be more confident in our future. Our teams continue executing our comprehensive recovery plan, reducing our cash burn, rebuilding our margins, and repairing our balance sheet. We have seen positive cash from operations for March, and this milestone is our first step towards achieving positive EBITDA and returning to profitability.โ€

Action Plan, Revenue and Capacity

โ€œWhile we initially anticipated trends improving during the quarter, we saw a bigger than expected step up in demand for leisure travel beginning in mid-February,โ€ said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlueโ€™s President and Chief Operating Officer.

โ€œFor the second quarter of 2021, our planning assumption for revenue is a decline of between (30%) and (35%) year over two, the largest sequential improvement in our revenue since the start of the pandemic. We expect unit revenue to significantly improve, driven by both increasing load factors and improving yields.

โ€œDuring the pandemic we have been focused on balancing supply and demand, managing our capacity to maximize revenue and rebuild our margins. For the second quarter of 2021, our planning assumption is for capacity to decline approximately (15%) year over two, given the strong sequential improvement in demand.โ€

Financial Performance and Outlook

โ€œIn March we reached breakeven cash from operations and our first quarter Adjusted EBITDA(1)ย was ahead of the range we anticipated, a result of improving revenue trends and continuing to successfully manage our cost structure, despite increasing fuel prices,โ€ said Steve Priest, JetBlueโ€™s Chief Financial Officer.

โ€œFor the second quarter, we estimate EBITDA will range between ($100) andย ($200) million(2), reflecting an acceleration of demand, partly offset by cost pressures from fuel prices, and airport rents and landing fees. On an EBITDA basis, we believe we will reach breakeven in the third quarter, and expect to remain in positive territory through the end of the year.

โ€œSince the start of the pandemic, we have gone deep on our cost structure with a focus on our fixed cost base, adding to the continued momentum from our Structural Cost Program. We expect to achieve better than 2019 CASM ex-fuel in 2022, providing a path to expand our EBITDA and ultimately, our pre-tax margins.

โ€œGoing forward, as we produce positive cash from operations, we plan to prioritize paying down high cost debt. We also intend to continue to take a strategic and measured approach to return to investment grade metrics and a debt to cap ratio between 30% and 40%.โ€
