Ryanair opens new bases at Turin and Agadir

Ryanair celebrated the opening of its new Turin base and launched its Summer 2022 schedule. With two based aircraft, representing an investment of $200m alongside the introduction of 19 new routes, Ryanair significantly enhances Turin and Piemonte region connectivity.

Ryanair announces over 30 routes from East Midlands for next summer

Ryanair has announced its Summer 2022 schedule from East Midlands Airport.

The summer schedule will operate over 130 weekly flights across 31 European destinations from April.

UK families can now book a summer holiday to European hotspots such as Alicante, Barcelona, Lanzarote, Malaga, Mallorca, Rhodes and Tenerife.

Ryanair cancels 700 flights at Lisbon this winter, attacks TAP’s “hoarding of take-off and landing slots”

Ryanair has made this announcement:

Ryanair has confirmed it has been forced to cancel 700 flights and three Lisbon routes (to Tours, Oujda and Bari) this Winter due to TAP’s continued hoarding of take-off and landing slots (which TAP does not use) at Lisbon Portela Airport. This anti-competitive “slot blocking” has prevented Ryanair from obtaining sufficient slots (despite the assistance of the slot coordinator and the airport operator), for planned new route growth. TAP’s plan to cut its fleet by 20% means it simply cannot use all the slots it holds.

The airline continued;

These cancelled flights will damage Lisbon’s connectivity and post-Covid recovery. The Portuguese Government and the European Commission must now intervene to end TAP’s anti-competitive “slot blocking”, free up this UNUSED capacity at Lisbon Portela and open Lisbon Montijo Airport to allow airlines to grow. It is essential that Portugal’s critical national infrastructure is used to support the local economy and not abused to protect an inefficient zombie airline, which the Portuguese Government has already wasted €3 billion of taxpayers’ money on.

Ryanair will keep all seven aircraft (a $700 m investment) and crew in place in Lisbon this Winter to ensure it is ready and able to reinstate all flights if sufficient slots are freed up.

Ryanair has announced a new route – Derry to Manchester, operating three weekly flights starting this winter.

Ryanair has announced its newest Italian base in Venice Marco Polo Airport with three new Boeing 737 8-200 “Gamechanger” based aircraft alongside the introduction of 18 new routes (24 total) significantly enhancing Venice’s domestic & international connectivity to 12 European countries from Summer 2022.

Ryanair’s new base at Venice Marco Polo represents its commitment to the Veneto region, where Ryanair has already opened a two aircraft base this year in Venice Treviso (operating 48 routes) and Verona Airport with this announcement of 2 new routes to Porto and Palma de Mallorca from Summer 2022.

The airline will fly to destinations such as Barcelona, Gdańsk, Helsinki, Lisbon, and Stockholm.

Ryanair’s board approves an accelerated post COVID growth plan

Ryanair has made this announcement:

Based on proxy votes already received, Shareholders have approved all resolutions and will receive a detailed update on the Airline Group’s post-Covid recovery plans over the next 5 years. Subject to no adverse Covid developments, and vaccinations remaining at 90%+ across Europe, Ryanair will take delivery of 210 Boeing 737 Gamechanger aircraft over the next 5 years. These aircraft will deliver industry lowest costs, reduced emissions, and will enable Ryanair accelerate its post-Covid growth, as opportunities open up at primary and secondary airports all over Europe, particularly where legacy carriers have failed or reduced fleet sizes as a result of Covid and State Aid.

Ryanair Group airlines now expect to deliver more rapid traffic growth over the next 5 years, and have raised their 5 year growth forecast from 33% to 50%. As a result, Ryanair’s pre-Covid traffic of 149m is expected to grow to over 225m guests by March 2026, which is 25m passengers p.a. higher than the previous target of 200m.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said:

“The performance of the Boeing 737 Gamechanger aircraft this summer has exceeded our expectations. Operational reliability, fuel consumption, and lower CO2 emissions have so far exceeded guidelines with very positive passenger and crew feedback to these new, more fuel efficient, quieter aircraft.

With these new deliveries, Ryanair will open 10 new bases across Europe this year as we work with airport partners to help them recover traffic & jobs post Covid, and take up slot opportunities that are being vacated by competitor airlines who have collapsed or significantly reduced their fleet sizes.

Ryanair expects to create over 5,000 new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers over the next 5 years, and the Group is excited to have, earlier this week, opened a €50m Aviation Training Centre in Dublin, with 2 further high quality training centers planned for Spain and Poland over the next 5 years.

The Covid-19 pandemic has delivered an unprecedented blow to Europe’s aviation and tourism industries. Only Ryanair has used this crisis to place significantly increased aircraft orders, to expand our airport partnerships, and to secure lower operating costs so that we can pass on even lower fares to our guests, so that together with our airport partners, we can recover strongly from the Covid pandemic and deliver higher than expected growth in both traffic and jobs over the next 5 years.”

In other news, Ryanair announced a new Winter route from Manchester to Grenoble as part of its UK Winter 2021 Schedule.

Ryanair will operate a weekly flight from Manchester to the popular French ski destination – Grenoble, from December 18 to the end of March 2022.

Ryanair announces winter 2021 schedule from Birmingham with 6 new routes

Ryanair has announced its Winter 2021/22 schedule from Birmingham, opening six new routes (28 in total) – connecting Birmingham to more exciting European destinations from October. Ryanair negotiations for a Boeing MAX10 order end without agreement

Ryanair has announced that its negotiations with Boeing for a Boeing 737-10 MAX 10 order (to follow its current deliveries for 210 Boeing 737-8 200 “Gamechanger” aircraft) have ended without any agreement on pricing.

Ryanair will take delivery of over 200 Boeing 737 “Gamechanger” aircraft over the next 5 years from 2021 to 2025. These deliveries will see Ryanair’s fleet grow to over 600 aircraft capable of carrying over 200 million guests per year.

Ryanair and Boeing have been in discussions about a large follow on order for Boeing MAX 10 aircraft over the past 10 months. However, last week it became clear that the pricing gap between the partners could not be closed and accordingly, both sides have agreed to waste no more time on these negotiations.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said:

“We are disappointed we couldn’t reach agreement with Boeing on a MAX 10 order. However, Boeing have a more optimistic outlook on aircraft pricing than we do, and we have a disciplined track record of not paying high prices for aircraft.

We have a more than sufficient order pipeline to allow us to grow strongly over the next 5 years with a Boeing 737 fleet, which will rise to over 600 aircraft and will enable Ryanair to capitalize on the extraordinary growth opportunities that are emerging all over Europe as the Continent recovers from the COVID pandemic.

We do not share Boeing’s optimistic pricing outlook, although this may explain why in recent weeks other large Boeing customers such as Delta and Jet2, have been placing new orders with Airbus, rather than Boeing”.

Ryanair has announced its Winter 2021 schedule for its three London airports – Stansted, Luton and Gatwick – opening 14 new routes (142 in total) – connecting London to more exciting European destinations from October.

As travel recovers to pre-Covid levels, Ryanair’s growth continues to lead traffic, tourism recovery and jobs in the UK. Ryanair will create over 500 new jobs for pilots, cabin crew and engineers at its London airports as it gears up for more growth in S2022.

As vaccinations rise and consumer confidence returns, Ryanair again calls on the UK Govt to scrap PCR tests for fully vaccinated arrivals and also to suspend APD (air passenger duty), to allow airlines and airports quickly recover connectivity, jobs and tourism in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. APD makes UK airports uncompetitive against lower cost EU airports, which is why Ryanair has added capacity at other EU airports in recent months in the likes of Zagreb, Stockholm, Billund and Riga. While Ryanair is committed to its London airports, the lack of Govt support for aviation and tourism recovery creates further barriers to traffic and growth.
