CUPE files to represent WestJet Encore flight attendants

CUPE has made this announcement:

CUPEย has filed an application at the Canada Industrial Relations Boardย to represent flight attendants at WestJetย Encore.

A majority of WestJet Encore flight attendants have signed cards supporting unionization with CUPE, after citing the need for better schedules and better opportunities for career advancement among their reasons for seeking to unionize. CUPE is thrilled to get to work improving the lives of Encoreย staff.

โ€œCUPE has industry-leading experience and expertise in improving the working conditions and the lives of our flight attendant members,โ€ said CUPE National President Mark Hancock. โ€œWe look forward to adding Encore flight attendants to our airlineย family.โ€

Flight attendants have a tough job ensuring the safety of their passengers at 20,000 feet, along with challenging working conditions and often unpredictable schedules. But being part of a union makes a world of difference, as flight attendants at WestJet mainline can already attest. โ€œMost definitely, my life is a lot better after joining CUPE,โ€ said Kruti Sutaria, who is now the secretary-treasurer of CUPE Local 4070, representing WestJet mainline flightย attendants.

In July 2018, CUPE was certified to represent roughly 3,000 flight attendants at WestJetโ€™s mainline carrier. CUPE is Canadaโ€™s flight attendant union, representing 15,000 flight attendants at ten different airlinesย nationwide.

Meanwhile WestJet issued this statement:

WestJet has issued the following statement from President and CEOย Ed Simsย regarding the application for certification of its WestJet Encore flight attendants by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

“We respect the individual rights of our employees to choose their representation.ย The caring and passionate nature of all employee groups will ensure we collectively deliver on our strategy of becoming a global network airline while keeping safety at the forefront.”

WestJet, Swoop and ALPA receive arbitrator’s award on first collective agreement for pilots

WestJet has stated it has received the award of the arbitrator, Mr. William Kaplan, in the interest arbitration between WestJet, Swoop and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

The arbitrator’s award, which is binding on all parties, follows mediated negotiations and formal arbitration hearings that have taken place since May 2018. The award sets the terms for the first collective agreement including all outstanding terms and conditions of employment for pilots at WestJet and Swoop.

“Today’s award provides WestJet the ability to grow, operate a sustainable business and to compete effectively in the current operating environment,” said Ed Sims, WestJet President and CEO. “The conclusion of this first agreementย allows us to now turn our attention to the arrival of WestJet’s first Boeing 787 Dreamliner and our transition to a globalย network carrier. I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with our pilots as we deliver on our global future.”

ALPA represents approximately 1,600 WestJet and Swoop pilots not including WestJet Encore. WestJet Encore pilots are represented by ALPA in a separate bargaining unit, which is currently engaged in collective bargaining with the company.

WestJet will meet with ALPA leadership in early January 2019 to review the terms of the award and work towards finalizing the collective agreement. Due to the scope and complexity of the work required, the airline will not provide further comment at this time. WestJet remains committed to working directly with the pilots’ representation. The details of the collective agreement will be communicated when finalized.
