Polish Air Force (Warsaw) Tupolev Tu-154M 101 (msn 90A837) VIP transport has crashed on approach near the Smolensk Airport in Russia, about 275 miles west of Moscow near the Polish border. The aircraft was attempting to land in the fog. Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife were aboard the plane, according to the Polish foreign ministry. A total of 96 people have died in the crash.
President Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures. They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, where Soviet troops killed thousands of Poles in World War II.
