airBaltic further reduces capacity for the upcoming months, parks its last Boeing 737

Type Retired: March 16, 2020 (flight BT405 KBP-RIX with YL-BBY)

airBaltic has made this announcement:

As the Coronavirus crisis continues, significantly affecting demand for air travel, airBaltic is forced to further decrease its overall capacity between April 15 and October 31, 2020, cancelling approximately 50% of its flights. Currently the airline is in the process of adjusting its network and flight schedule according to temporarily reduced fleet in the beginning of restarting the scheduled operations once the crisis is over.

Martin Gauss, CEO of airBaltic: โ€œConsidering the significant impact on the demand, we currently plan to restart our operations gradually. When we will be able to, we will start with a reduced number of aircraft who will serve daily flights to our top routes. With each upcoming week, more aircraft will return to service, offering more flights.โ€

In addition, airBaltic has made a decision to delay launch of the new routes it had planned for summer season of 2020 from all three Baltic states as well as temporarily discontinue a number of additional routes.

With a reduced schedule, airBaltic was able to early retire its three remaining Boeing 737-300s on March 16, 2020. The type was due to be retired later this year with the arrival of further Airbus A220s.

airBaltic hasย announced that it will end its Boeing 737 fleet operations in the autumn of 2019, one year ahead of the original plan. The airline aims to minimize complexity and benefit from the additional efficiency of the Airbus A220-300 aircraft which will be the only jet type operated by airBaltic.

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: โ€œAirbus A220-300 is the aircraft of our future and, by phasing out the Boeing 737, we will have the youngest jet fleet in Europe. The introduction of Airbus A220-300 has been very successful and provided the additional efficiency any airline is seeking in the highly competitive aviation market. Thanks to the good overall performance we took a decision to introduce a single type fleet of up to 80 (50 firm order and 30 options) Airbus A220-300 aircraft by 2022.โ€

So far airBaltic has received 14 of its Airbus A220-300 orders and eight new aircraft will join this year. The Airbus A220-300 has performed beyond companyโ€™s expectations, delivering better overall performance, fuel efficiency and convenience for both passengers and staff. In late 2018, airBaltic phased out three of its Boeing 737-500 aircraft. Currently the airline still operates six Boeing 737-300 and two Boeing 737-500 jets.

airBaltic serves over 70 destinations from Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius, offering the largest variety of destinations and convenient connections via Riga to its network spanning Europe, Scandinavia, the CIS and the Middle East. In summer 2019, airBaltic will introduce five new destinations from Riga to Dublin, Stuttgart and Lviv as well as Kos and Menorca.
