Horizon Air and its pilots tentatively agree on a six-year contract extension

Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) (Seattle/Tacoma) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have announced they have reached tentative agreement to extend the current contract for the carrier’s 610 pilots for six years.

A ratification vote by union members is expected to be completed by mid-December. If ratified, the new contract would become amendable on Dec. 14, 2018. The current contract was ratified in November 2010 and becomes amendable in December 2015.

Alaska Air Group reports net income of $67.5 million

Alaska Air Group (Seattle/Tacoma), the parent organization of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon), today reported its financial results for the second quarter. The company issued the follow report:

Excluding the impact of mark-to-market fuel hedge adjustments ofย $69.6 million($43.3 millionย after tax, orย $0.60ย per diluted share), the company reported recordย secondย quarter2012ย net income ofย $110.8 million, orย $1.53ย per diluted share, compared to net income excluding special items ofย $89.6 million, orย $1.22ย per diluted share, inย 2011.

Horizon Air introduces the SDSU Aztecs logoplane

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) today (May 31) unveiled a specially painted Aztec plane with San Diego State University’s logo and hallmark scarlet and black colors before a crowd of cheering students, alumni, faculty and people traveling through San Diego International Airport. The unveiling of the Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) N414QX (msn 4061) was timed to celebrate the start of Alaska Airlines’ new San Diego flights to Fresno, Monterey and Santa Rosa, California, which will begin on June 4 and 5.

Like other university-themed aircraft operated for Alaska Airlines by its sister carrier, Horizon Air, the Aztec aircraft was painted at no cost to San Diego State University.

Following the unveiling in Terminal 1, fans, students and 15 radio contest winners will depart on the Aztec plane’s inaugural flight along the Southern California coast, and over the Coachella Valley and Salton Sea.

Aztec plane trivia:

  • The Bombardier Q400 has a wing span of 93 feet, 3 inches, and measures 107 feet and 9 inches in length.
  • The plane accommodates 76 passengers and four crew members.
  • With a cruising speed of 414 mph, the plane can fly at a maximum altitude of 25,000 feet.
  • A crew of eight people worked around the clock for seven days at Associated Painters Inc., of Spokane, Wash., to paint the plane.
  • The painting required 32 gallons of white paint, 10 gallons of red paint and four gallons of black paint. In addition, about 2,000 sheets of sandpaper and 10,000 yards of masking tape were also used.

The San Diego State University plane is the ninth university-themed aircraft flown by Horizon Air since 2008. Other paint themes include the universities of Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, Boise State, Montana State, Oregon State and Washington State.

New San Diego โ€“ intra-California routes

In conjunction with the SDSU plane’s unveiling, Alaska Airlines is starting new nonstop daily service from San Diego to Fresno/Yosemite, Monterey and Santa Rosa/Sonoma County on June 4 and 5.

The three new routes will be served by Horizon Air’s twin-engine Bombardier Q400 turboprops.

Along with the new intra-California routes and Aztec plane unveiling, Alaska Airlines also announced today it will operate five flights a week between San Diego and Orlando, starting on October 11, 2012.

Horizon Air to introduce a San Diego State University logoplane

Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) (Seattle/Tacoma) will continue its university logoplane series.

San Diego State University’s hallmark scarlet and black colors and logo will soon be featured on a Horizon Air 76-seat Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) turboprop. To celebrate, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air and the university are partnering with San Diego radio stations to give Aztec fans a chance to win a seat onboard the maiden flight.

This will be the first logoplane for a school in California.

Like other university-themed planes operated for Alaska Airlines by its sister carrier,ย Horizon Air, the Aztec aircraft will be painted at no cost to the university and will fly throughout Alaska’s regional route system.

To celebrate, Alaska Airlines is offering Aztec fans a chance to win a seat on the May 31 inaugural flight. The flight will take winners on a scenic tour along the Southern California coast, then to the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs and over the Salton Sea.

People traveling through San Diego International Airport on May 31 may catch a first glimpse of the Aztec plane at an unveiling event scheduled at 10:30 a.m. The unveiling is timed to celebrate the start of Alaska Airlines’ new nonstop daily service fromย San Diego to Fresno/Yosemite, Monterey and Santa Rosa/Sonoma Countyย starting on June 4 and 5, 2012.

Alaska Air Group reports a first quarter net profit of $28.3 million

Alaska Air Group (Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air) (Seattle/Tacoma) reported first quarter net income, excluding special items, of $28.3 million, or $0.39 per diluted share, compared to net income of $29.5 million, or $0.40 per diluted share. This quarter’s results compare to a First Call mean estimate of $0.35 per share and represent the second-best first quarter result in the groups’s history.

The group also recorded net income under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) of $40.8 million, or $0.56 per diluted share, compared to net income of $74.2 million, or $1.01 per diluted share.

Alaska Horizon to operate Portland-Pasco flights

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) announced today it will launch a new daily nonstop flight between Portland, Oregon, and Pasco, Washington, starting on August 27, on Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400_ aircraft operated by Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) (Seattle/Tacoma).

Pasco represents the third city that Horizon Air began serving when the carrier started operations in September 1981, and one of three cities (with Kennewick and Richland) that make up the Tri-Cities region of Eastern Washington. The new Portland-Pasco route enables passengers heading to California and Hawaii to connect to flights beyond Oregon, rather than first flying through Seattle/Tacoma.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air employees receive $54 Million in 2011 annual bonuses

Alaska Air Group (Seattle/Tacoma) paid annual bonuses totaling $53.8 million today to nearly all of its 12,800 employees for exceeding the company’s 2011 operational and financial goals. The bonus of about 6.7 percent of annual pay, or more than three weeks pay for most workers, is in addition to $1,000 in bonuses, on average, that each employee earned last year for achieving monthly on-time and customer satisfaction targets. The combined monthly and annual bonuses amounted to nearly $72 million.

Nearly $33 million in annual bonuses โ€” 61 percent of the total โ€” is being paid to some 6,300 Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air employees in the Puget Sound area. Another $7.6 million is being paid to employees in the Portland, Ore., area while $5.3 million is going to workers throughout the state of Alaska.

Bonuses in Alaska Air Group’s Performance Based Pay Plan are determined by meeting specific company-wide goals for safety, customer satisfaction, cost control and profit that are approved annually by the board of directors. Annual bonuses have averaged 5 percent since the plan was formed in 2003.

Alaska Airlines starts seasonal service between San Jose and Palm Springs, California

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) today inaugurates new seasonal service between San Jose and Palm Springs, California. The new nonstop route operates through June 2. After a hiatus from June 3 to October 4, seasonal service will then resume on October 5, 2012.

The seasonal San Jose-Palm Springs route will be operated by Alaska’s sister carrier, Horizon Air, with the fuel-efficient Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400).

Horizon Air orders two additional Bombardier DHC-8-402s (Q400s)

Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) (Seattle/Tacoma) has signed a firm purchase agreement for two Bombardier DHC-8-402s (Q400s) NextGen airliners. Horizon Air, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, is the largest operator of Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft in the Americas with 48 aircraft in service today.

Bill Ayer to retire as CEO at the Alaska Air Group

The Alaska Air Group (Seattle/Tacoma) board of directors and Bill Ayer, chairman and chief executive officer, announced today that Ayer will retire as CEO of Air Group and its subsidiary carriers, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, effective at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on May 15. Brad Tilden, a 21-year veteran at Air Group, will succeed Ayer as CEO of Air Group and the company’s two airlines and will remain as president of Alaska Airlines. Ayer will continue to serve as chairman of the board.

Ayer, 57, has spent three decades at Air Group, including 10 years as CEO. In addition to serving as chairman of Air Group and its subsidiary boards, he will participate as a member of the NextGen Advisory Committee, a panel of aviation industry leaders who are working with the FAA to modernize the nation’s air traffic control system and improve airport and airspace efficiency.

Tilden, who is 51, joined Alaska Airlines from Price Waterhouse in 1991. He was promoted to Air Group’s chief financial officer in 2000, to executive vice president โ€“ planning and finance in 2007, and to president of Alaska Airlines in 2008. As president, Tilden has overseen the nation’s seventh-largest airline, with 9,500 employees and 119 aircraft serving 61 destinations across the continental United States and in Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico.

In addition to serving on the Alaska Air Group board, Tilden is a director of Flow International Corp., Pacific Lutheran University and the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America (where he will serve as council president beginning in March). He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University and an MBA from the University of Washington and is a private pilot.

Ayer, also a private pilot, joined Horizon in 1982 and has served in a variety of marketing, planning and operational posts at the regional carrier and Alaska Airlines. He was appointed CEO of Air Group and Alaska Airlines in 2002, succeeding John F. Kelly, and became chairman in 2003. Ayer, who is joining the University of Washington Board of Regents, is chairman of the Puget Energy board, serves on the UW Foster School of Business Advisory Board, and is a director of Angel Flight West and the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
