Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air operate their first biofuel flights

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) yesterday afternoon (November 9) inaugurated biofuel-powered passenger service with two flights fromย Seattle/Tacoma toย Washington (Reagan National) andย Portland, Oregon Alaskaย and its sister carrier, Horizon Air, are operating 75 select flights betweenย Seattle/Tacoma and the two cities over the next few weeks using a 20 percent blend of sustainable biofuel made from used cooking oil.

Alaska Air Group estimates the 20 percent certified biofuel blend it is using for the 75 flights will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 10 percentโ€”the equivalent of taking 26 cars off the road for a year. If the company powered all of its flights with a 20 percent biofuel blend for one year, the annual emissions savings would represent the equivalent of taking nearly 64,000 cars off the road or providing electricity to 28,000 homes.

There currently is no supply of aviation biofuels in the Pacific Northwest, although potential sources were identified during a regional assessment by the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest group earlier this year (www.safnw.com). Alaska Air Group purchased the fuel through SkyNRG, an aviation biofuels broker. The biofuel was made by Dynamic Fuels at its facility inย Geismar, Louisiana.

Alaska and Horizon to operate biofuel flights

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) announced today (November 7) it and Horizon Air will fly 75 commercial passenger flights in the United States powered by biofuel, starting on November 9, 2011.

Two maiden biofuel-powered flights will leave Seattle/Tacoma on November 9 for Washington, D.C., and Portland, Oregon. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air will continue to operate select flights between Seattle/Tacoma and the two cities over the next few weeks using a 20 percent blend of sustainable biofuel made from used cooking oil that meets rigorous international safety and sustainability standards.

Alaska Air Group estimates the 20 percent certified biofuel blend it is using for the 75 flights will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 10 percent, or 134 metric tons, the equivalent of taking 26 cars off the road for a year. If the company powered all of its flights with a 20 percent biofuel blend for one year, the annual emissions savings would represent the equivalent of taking nearly 64,000 cars off the road or providing electricity to 28,000 homes.

The fuel was supplied by SkyNRG, an aviation biofuels broker, and made by Dynamic Fuels, a producer of next-generation renewable, synthetic fuels made from used cooking oil. The synthetic high-performance airliner fuel made by Dynamic Fuels โ€” a $170 million joint-venture between Tyson Foods Inc. and Syntroleum Corp. โ€” meets aviation and military safety, sustainability and performance standards.

Alaska’s commercial biofuel flights come six months after Air Group partnered in a strategic initiative called Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest (SAFN), a 10-month regional stakeholder effort to explore the feasibility, challenges and opportunities for creating an aviation biofuels industry in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The study determined the region has the diverse stocks for biofuels, delivery infrastructure and political will needed to create a viable biofuels industry. There currently is no supply of aviation biofuels in the Pacific Northwest.

Alaska Airlines to move into a renovated Terminal 6 at LAX

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) has reached agreement with Los Angeles World Airports to move from its existing location at Terminal 3 to Terminal 6, paving the way for a major renovation project featuring its Airport of the Future check-in process and modernized gate facilities.

The move will provide a single terminal operation for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, as well as more convenient access to U.S. Customs and Immigration checkpoints and to codeshare partner Delta Air Lines, located in Terminal 5.

Alaska Airlines plans to move into Terminal 6 in late 2011 and begin operations there in spring 2012.

Also planned as part of the renovation are a new Board Room lounge, central service counter, spacious passenger waiting area and new state-of-the-art gate information displays. The project will incorporate sustainable building practices in accordance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Alaska Airlines introduced its “Airport of the Future” check-in process at Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2004. Patented in 2006, the design enables travelers to quickly obtain boarding passes and check luggage at easy-to-use kiosks and bag-check stations instead of a traditional ticket counter. Alaska has since implemented Airport of the Future at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and, on a smaller scale, in Los Angeles, Boise, Idaho, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and several locations in Alaska.

Alaska to drop LA service from Eureka and Redding

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) has announced it is discontinuing all flights from Eureka and Redding, California, to Los Angeles, effective on April 17, 2011. The Alaska (AS) coded flights are operated by Alaska Horizon (Horizon Air).

The decision to drop the service was due to the insufficient number of passengers flying between Eureka and Redding and Los Angeles. Alaska Horizon cannot operate the flights profitably which led to the decision to discontinue the service. Eureka and Redding are among the smallest intra-California markets that the Alaska Air Group serves.

Horizon Air has operated flights from Redding since 1992 and from Eureka since 1994.
