Finnair has made this announcement:

From July, Finnair will gradually add frequencies and routes back to its network. Finnair will review its schedule on a monthly basis and will update it as travel restrictions are removed and demand starts to recover.

โ€We expect aviation to recover gradually, starting in Julyโ€, says Finnair Chief Commercial Officer Ole Orvรฉr. โ€Our intention is to operate approximately 30% of our normal amount of flights in July, and we will also start long-haul flights to our key Asian destinations. We will then add routes and frequencies month by month as demand recovers.โ€

Finnair will flexibly add flights as demand develops. The flight schedule will also take into account the changes in travel restrictions in different countries.

Long-haul operations start from Asia

Finnairโ€™s long-haul operations will commence in phases from July, with strong focus on Asia, which is strategically important for Finnair. Finnair will fly to Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai in Greater China (subject to government approval); to Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo Narita in Japan; and to Singapore, Seoul and Bangkok. Long-haul operations are supported by the cargo demand. In August, Finnair will start flights to Delhi and to New York, and in November to Tokyo Haneda airport. Finnair also has flights to Miami, Krabi and Phuket during the winter holiday season.

European operations serve key cities

On European routes, Finnair will first focus on key centres, and will in July fly to Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dรผsseldorf, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Gothenburg, Geneva, Hamburg, London, Malaga, Manchester,ย  Moscow, Munich, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Riga, Tallinn, Stockholm, St Petersburg, Vilnius, Vienna and Zรผrich. In August Finnair will start flights to Barcelona, Milan, Madrid, Rome and Warsaw. During the summer holiday season Finnair will also operate individual flights to some of the holiday destinations in Southern Europe.

Domestic flying maintains key air connections

In July, Finnair will operate six domestic routes in Finland, flying to Kuopio, Mariehamn, Oulu, Rovaniemi, Turku and Vaasa. In August Finnair will start flying to Ivalo and Kittilรค in the Finnish Lapland, and in September operations start to Kuusamo and Tampere. Finnair will not operate to Joensuu, Jyvรคskylรค, Kajaani, Kemi or Kokkola during summer 2020. Decisions for these five destinations for winter 2020/2021 will be made later on, when there is more visibility to how the demand develops.

Flexibility for customers

Since March, Finnair has offered its customers extraordinary flexibility to change travel dates, and this continues. Customers can change their travel dates for all flights bought from Finnairโ€™s own channels between 1 April and 30 June 2020 flexibly and travel within the ticket validity.

As Finnair publishes its flying schedule from July 2020 to end of March 2021, it is also cancelling those flights that will not be operating. Finnair will handle flight cancellations in phases, and customers will be contacted by the end of June about any cancelled flights they were booked onto.

A list of routes that Finnair will not operate during summer 2020 and winter 2020/2021 at all is available on Finnairโ€™s Travel updates page.

Finnair expands its codeshare relationship with Japan Airlines and QANTAS Airways, Lufthansa Technik to provide component support for the new Airbus A350s

Finnair (Helsinki) is strengthening its ties with fellow oneworld alliance members JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo) and QANTAS Airways (Sydney), with new codeshares on the airlinesโ€™ respective services to Busan, South Korea and Perth, Australia.

Busan is a new addition to Finnairโ€™s extended network, which Finnair passengers can now reach daily via Tokyo Narita on services operated by Japan Airlines. The new codeshare allows Finnair to serve South Koreaโ€™s prosperous second-largest city, with a population of 3.6 million that is growing in economic clout and seeking more connections to Europe.

Japan Airlines and Finnair already codeshare extensively on each otherโ€™s services throughout Europe and Japan.

Additionally, from June 26, 2015 Finnair passengers can connect to Perth via Singapore on services operated by oneworld partner QANTAS Airways. This creates additional scheduling and route options for Finnair passengers, who can also connect to Perth via Hong Kong on oneworld partner Cathay Pacific Airways (Hong Kong).

In other news,ย Finnair, the first European airline to operate the Airbus A350-900 aircraft (above), has awarded Lufthansa Technik a 12-year agreement for component support for the new aircraft type. Lufthansa Technik is one of the leading providers of technical services for the aviation industry, and the agreement with Finnair is the company’s first contract for A350 XWB component support.

The exclusive Total Component Support TCSยฎcontract covers the availability and repair services of A350-900 XWB components. Finnair already has an agreement with Lufthansa Technik on engine-related components service for V2500 engines and APU services for APS3200.

Finnair’s own maintenance organization at the Helsinki Airport is responsible for the line maintenance of Finnair’s current fleet and the new A350-900 XWB fleet.

Finnair has firm orders for 19 A350-900 XWB aircraft, the first four of which are expected to arrive in the fleet in the second half of this year, with another seven in 2016 and 2017. The complete order will be fulfilled by 2023.

Tomorrow Finnair celebrates 90 years of flying

Finnair (Helsinki) tomorrowย marks exactly 90 years since Finnairโ€™s first commercial flight. On March 20, 1924, Finnairโ€™s first flight transported 357 pounds of mail from Katajanokka in Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia aboard a Junkers F13 D-335 seaplane. Finnair, originally called Aero Oy, was founded onย November 1 of the previous year.

Nine decades later, Finnair currently operates 43 aircraft traveling to more than 60 destinations around the world and employs nearly six thousand people. Last year, the company transported 9.3 million passengers, which represents 60 percent of all passengers that passed through Helsinki Airport. Air traffic plays a central role in Finnish business and the national economy, directly and indirectly employing over 120,000 people in Finland.

Today, Finnair, the worldโ€™s sixth-oldest airline still in operation, has six daily flights on weekdays between Helsinki and Tallinn operated by Flybe.

According to Flightstats, Finnair was the worldโ€™s most punctual airline in four different months last year, and in 2013 it operated the worldโ€™s second most punctual airline network.

Finnairโ€™s recent milestones include the launch of new routes to Xiโ€™an and Hanoi, design cooperation with Marimekko, renewed inflight dining options in Business Class, new and environmentally friendly offices, and becoming the first airline in the world to take delivery of new A321 Sharklet aircraft (see photo above).

Later this year Finnair is set to enter a joint business on EU-Japan traffic with fellowย oneworld partners British Airways and Japan Airlines. Furthermore, Finnair will continue the retrofit of its widebody fleet with seats in Business Class that convert to full-flat beds. In 2015 Finnair will become the first European airline to operate the next-generation Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.

The Finnish Airline Pilotsโ€™ Association and the Finnish Aviation Museum will organize a joint celebration to mark the 90th anniversary of Finnairโ€™s maiden flight at 12:00 pm on March 20ย at Matruusinpuisto park in Helsinkiโ€™s Katajanokka district. The event is open to all aviation enthusiasts. Weather permitting, the event will also feature a visit by a seaplane.

Follow the events celebrating the 90th anniversary of Finnairโ€™s maiden flight on Twitter under the hashtag #Finnair90.

Congratulations Finnair!
