Wizz Air to expand its Budapest operation

Wizz Air ((wizzair.com) (Hungary) (Budapest) has announced it will invest HUF 25 billion ($100 million) into expanding its operations in Budapest due to the termination of MALEV Hungarian Airlines. As of March 2012, the airline will add two Airbus A320 aircraft to its Budapest base, a 66% increase in overall capacity.

Wizz Air has increased its projections for the number of passengers carried yearly from 1.4 million to 2 million. This will result in the addition of approximately 700 new (direct and associated) jobs in Hungary. The airline will launch one new route and increase frequencies on several existing routes. The number of available flights per week will nearly double from 67 to 129:

The Budapest-Bucharest flight will initially operate three times per week. With the addition of three flights to London Luton, Wizz Air will now offer triple daily service. Flights to Eindhoven and Brussels Charleroi will double in frequency, now operating twice daily. The frequency of flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, and Malmo will also double and be available at least daily.

With the previous announced new routes by Ryanair, coupled by these Wizz Air increases, Budapest is becoming a new low-fare center of Europe.

Wizz Air carries over 11 million passengers in 2011, up 15%

Wizz Air (Hungary) (Budapest) announced it carried over 11 million passengers in 2011, representing 15% growth year on year.

Average load factor reached over 84%, in line with previous years.

The airline opened three new operating bases in 2011: Belgrade in Serbia, Vilnius in Lithuania and Tirgu Mures in Romania.

Currently, Wizz Air operates from 15 bases and offers over 200 routes across Europe.ย The carrier employs 1,500 people in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia, Lithuania and Switzerland.

In other news, the low-fare carrier launched the Budapest-Dortmund route on January 13.

Additionally the carrier, starting on April 25 2012, will add Stavanger (Norway) from Katowice. The new Katowice โ€“ Stavanger service will operate initially twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Wizz Air to launch Bucharest-Palma flights

Wizz Air (Budapest) will launch twice-weekly service between Bucharest (Baneasa) and Palma de Mallorca on June 23, 2012 per Airline Route.

Wizz Air to expand operations at Timisoara, Romania

Wizz Air (wizzair.com) (Budapest) has announced it is expanding its operations at Timisoara Airport by increasing capacity on a number of routes.

Starting on March 27, 2012 Wizz Air will increase services to Dortmund (Germany) and from June 23, 2012 to Beauvais (near Paris) (France), London (Luton) (UK), Bologna (Forli) and Rome (Fiumicino).

Wizz Air will increase its capacity in Timisoara by 20% next summer. As a result, the company now expects to carry over 400,000 passengers to/from the airport in 2012.

Wizz Air adds a second Airbus A320 at its Vilnius base

Wizz Air (Hungary) (Budapest) announced it will launch four new routes and increase frequencies on several existing services by adding a second Airbus A320 aircraft to its Vilnius base as of May 2012.

On top of the eight current destinations from Vilnius, Wizz Air introduces four new routes to Liverpool, Beauvais (near Paris), Oslo (Sandefjord Torp) and Bergen, and also increases frequencies on two existing routes from May 27, 2012.

Wizz Air signs MOU for 50 more A320s

Wizz Air (Budapest), backed by Indigo Partners, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for 50 additional 180-seat Airbus A320s. This will bring the total orders to 132 aircraft.
