Iceland Volcano – Part 2

Icelandair (Keflavik) Iceland Express (Keflavik) along with other airlines serving Iceland were disrupted today due to the latest volcano eruption on the island. This time the Grimsvotn volcano erupted closing Keflavik International Airport (KEF), which serves Reykjavik, the capital. KEF will be closed until at least some time tomorrow.

The volcano erupted yesterday at 1925 UTC. The eruption began a with 12 km/7.5 miles-high plumes accompanied by multiple earthquakes. The ash cloud from the eruption rose to 20km/12 miles, and is so far 10 times larger than the 2004 eruption, and the strongest in Grímsvötn for 100 years.

This eruption follows the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano last year which disrupted travel in Europe.
