Air France opens up a new strategy to combat low-cost carriers

Air France (Paris) has worked out a deal with its pilots to open up new bases away from expensive Paris in order to help combat the inroads made by the low-fare airlines. The first new base will be Marseille and the first new route will be Marseille-Beirut starting on October 2, 2011. Other new destinations from MRS include Biarritz, Casablanca, Milan, Moscow and Prague. The Airbus A320 will be used on the new routes.

    It’s great to see Air France starting routes from the regions. I wish BA would do it in the UK

    Whether it will be effective at stopping the LCCs I don’t know. They have quite good marketing and product identities, and I guess AF is seen as a more premium product in comparison.
