Alaska Airlines starts selling tickets for flights from Everett Paine Field

From the Alaska Airlines blog:

If you live north of Seattle and throughout Snohomish County, weโ€™re ready to make your day with some news youโ€™ve probably been waiting to hear: Weโ€™re now selling tickets for 18 daily nonstop flights between Paine Field in Everett, Washington, and eight West Coast cities.

Say hello to Alaska flights at a more convenient, brand new airport terminal, and goodbye to a potentially much farther drive south to Sea-Tac Airport.

The first day of scheduled service is Feb. 11, 2019, subject to government approval. The all-jet service from Paine Field will be provided by Horizon Air flying the Embraer 175 aircraft featuring first class and premium class cabins.

Alaska Airlines beer and snacks: A West Coast pub at cruising altitude

From the Alaska Airlines blog:

Whether Iโ€™m traveling for business or pleasure, I look for ways to relax and enjoy my time in the air, which typically involves enjoying a cold craft beer and a snack. Lucky for me, Alaska Airlinesโ€™ beer menu offers nothing but craft beer. The companyโ€™s rotating West Coast brews โ€“ along with a new line of feel-good retail snacks โ€“ pleases a variety of palates with a range of choices.

When considering beer and snack options, I approach my decisions the same way whether on the ground or in the air. I peruse the beer menu, make my decision and then look for a snack to accompany the flavor attributes of my beer. As I whiz across the sky at cruising altitude, I want to feel like Iโ€™m relaxing at the local pub.

Fremont Lush IPA + Creative Snacks Trail Mix

untitled 1 Alaska Airlines beer & snacks: A West Coast pub at cruising altitudeNew on the menu this week, Lush IPA (80 IBUs) from Seattleโ€™s Fremont Brewing offers a true, authentic taste of the Northwest, which is to say itโ€™s a hop-lovers dream. Brewed with hops from the Yakima Valley, the nationโ€™s most productive hop-growing region, this beer has earned the adoration of beer fans in the Puget Sound region and was named Best IPA in Seattle Magazineโ€™s 2018 Best of Beer Awards.

โ€œIโ€™m proud and excited that our hometown airline, Alaska, will offer Lush IPA to all passengers nationwide,โ€ says Matt Lincecum, owner and brewmaster at Fremont Brewing. โ€œIโ€™m proud that our brewery was picked to represent our region and excited to share the wonder of our local farmersโ€™ amazing hops and barley with every person that orders a Lush IPA on Alaskaโ€™s flights.โ€

โ€œLush IPA celebrates the ingenuity of the Northwestโ€™s hop farmers. It features new-school tropical hop flavors with classic, piney hop flavors for a rich, lush sensory experience,โ€ he continues.

According to Matt, the beerโ€™s soft, well-rounded melon notes pair well with a wide variety of foods. Try it alongside the all-natural, GMO-free Creative Snacks Trail Mix ย and notice how the fruity character of the beer is accentuated by the cranberry and other fruit flavors in the snack.

Alaskan Brewing Kรถlsch + Lukeโ€™s Organic Potato Chips

kolschcanmockup12oz r Alaska Airlines beer & snacks: A West Coast pub at cruising altitudeI love a hoppy IPA, but sometimes I crave a light and refreshing beer, like the Kรถlsch (18 IBUs) from Alaskan Brewing Company, another of the current beer selections on the menu. This Alaskan rendition of a German classic beer style is brewed with glacier-fed water at the companyโ€™s facility in Juneau, Alaska. This bright, crisp and refreshing beer is designed to please just about every palate and fits into an active lifestyle.

Sip this one while you enjoy a bag of Lukeโ€™s Organic Potato Chips, noticing how the sea salt helps enliven the beerโ€™s soft, cracker-like flavors.

โ€œBecause of its mild, easy-drinking character, this beer pairs well with just about any food; it accompanies all, but overpowers none,โ€ says Andy Kline, communications manager at Alaskan Brewing.

โ€œFor two decades, people up here in Alaska have been pairing this beer with activities like salmon fishing, hiking and kayaking.โ€

Firestone Walker 805 Blonde Ale + Himalayan Gold Popcorn

Firestone Walker Brewing says they created 805 Blonde Ale for the laid-back California lifestyle, but in recent years it has gained wider popularity up and down the West Coast.

Lagunitas 12th of Never Pale Ale + Krave Gourmet Beef Cuts

12th of never can image cropped Alaska Airlines beer & snacks: A West Coast pub at cruising altitudeSpeaking of a laid-back approach to life, the folks at Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma, California have mastered the art. The breweryโ€™s quirky, fun-loving attitude is expressed in its creative, always-tasty beers. The breweryโ€™s 12th of Never Pale Ale (45 IBUs) is an exercise in balance, combining the yin of the hops with the yang of the malt. It is light, yet full bodied.

It is not quite as hop-forward as an IPA, but 12th of Never Pale Ale still packs plenty of aromatic, tropical hop flavor, which is counterbalanced by the grains.

The recipe includes some puffed wheat, which lends the beer a silky-smooth mouthfeel and helps it go down smooth and easy. Still, it is robust enough to stand up to the rich flavors of the all-natural Krave Gourmet Beef Cuts.

Dessert: Skinny Dipped Dark Chocolate Almonds

From a super-hopped IPA to a crisp and mild Kรถlsch, with a Blonde Ale and a Pale Ale that sit right between those two extremes, Alaska Airlinesโ€™ beer selection has something for everyone. Have a beer and a snack, relax and enjoy some time at cruising altitude in your flying pub.

Alaska Airlines opens a new hangar at Anchorage

From the Alaska Airlines blog:

By Tim Thompson, state of Alaska, public affairs

Flying Boeingย 737 Next Generationย aircraft in the Last Frontier has its challenges: inclement weather, remote locations, the occasional seal or caribou occupying the runway. But with over 86 years of flying experience, weโ€™re pretty adept at meeting challenges.

This is especially true when it comes to making sure our aircraft are maintained with a focus on safety and performance. To meet the rigors of flying in Alaska and beyond, we unveiled a brand new Maintenance and Engineering Facility in Anchorage, Alaska this week.

dsc00120 New Anchorage hangar built to house two of our largest 737s

The $50 million state-of-the-art building more than doubles the size of our original โ€™50s-era hangar. The old hangar is also unable to accommodate the Next Generation aircraft currently flying in the state. This means maintenance and engineering (M&E) personnel have been forced to work outside in the elements for routine maintenance and repairs. The new facility, spanning 100,000 square feet, will be able to house two of our largest aircraft in a covered and controlled environment.

โ€œOur existing facility has served us well for many years. But as we grow and add larger planes to our fleet, the time was right for us to upgrade our northernmost maintenance facility,โ€ said Kurt Kinder, Alaska Airlines vice president of maintenance and engineering.

The new hangar is part of our โ€œ2020 Great Land Investment Plan,โ€ an investment of over $100 million across the state of Alaska. This plan includes updating and, in some cases, expanding 11 airline-owned terminals as well as adding three 737-700 Next Generation freighter aircraft to our fleet, which will improve the ability to serve cargo customersโ€™ needs with scheduled freighter service.

At the hangarโ€™s grand opening, we presented a $50,000 check to Yuut Elitnaurviat for their new Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) School in Bethel, Alaska. This donation will help support the training of future aviation technicians, with the first cohort of students starting at the A&P school in February 2019.

โ€œAlaska Airlines provides a vital and unique service in the state ofย Alaska, unlike any other place we fly,โ€ saidย Marilyn Romano, Alaska Airlines regional vice president. โ€œThese improvements within the state allow us to better serve our communities, business partners and the people ofย Alaskaย for decades to come.โ€

Video:

The new hangar is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified facility and designed to meet our fleet additions for the next 30-50 years. It will house over 80 employees, including those from M&E and Stores, and will become our new regional headquarters for the state of Alaska.

Weโ€™re the largest passenger carrier in Alaska with 126 peak season departures and 19 destinations throughout the state.

Fun facts

  • The new hangar measures 100,000 square feet, twice as big asย the existingย Anchorageย maintenance hangar.
  • The new hangar will be able to house two Boeing 737-Max 9 aircraft, which will be the longest/widest planes in our fleet.
  • Built in 1954, our current Alaska hangar was originally owned by Northern Consolidated Airlines and designed to accommodate Douglas DC-3 aircraft.
  • Over 500 Alaskans built the new Maintenance and Engineering Hangar.
  • In addition to theย Anchorageย hangar, we have a maintenance hangar inย Seattle.

Alaska Airlines and Paine Field go way back โ€“ all the way to the โ€™40s

From the Alaska Airlines blog:

When we announced weโ€™d be flying out of Paine Field Snohomish County Airport in Everett, Washington, we heard your cheers. What you may not realize is how loudly weโ€™re cheering with you โ€“ and why.

By offering new commercial service, subject to government approval, from the North Puget Sound region in early 2019, weโ€™re returning to our roots. Flying out of Paine Field is a homecoming for Alaska Airlines.

In the late 1940s, we outgrew our home at Merrill Field in Anchorage as we added World War II surplus aircraft to our fleet. We needed a bigger base for charter flights, so airline President James Wooten made a deal with Boeing to house our operating headquarters at Paine Field โ€“ at the Boeing Service Center in the northwest corner of the airfield to be exact.

151 Alaska Airlines and Paine Field go way back โ€“ all the way to the โ€™40s

In 1953, we moved our corporate headquarters to downtown Seattle but kept a maintenance hangar at Paine Field. Snohomish County officials built a hangar for Alaska at the southern end of Paine Field three years later.

It wasnโ€™t until 1963 that we moved our maintenance team to Sea-Tac airport. Since that time, the Paine Field hangars have been used by Paul Allenโ€™s Aviation Flying Heritage Museum.

12 Alaska Airlines and Paine Field go way back โ€“ all the way to the โ€™40s

Itโ€™s Paine, not Pain

Paine Field was named after Topliff Olin Paine, a pilot for the postal service who grew up in Everett, attended the University of Washington and worked for the U.S. Forest Service before joining the Army during World War I.

Paine is famous for piloting his aircraft into areas that others thought impossible. In 1920, he was appointed as a pilot with the then experimental Air Mail Service. He was considered one of the top flyers for the Western Division of the Air Mail Service.

Howโ€™d it get there?

Paine Field Snohomish County Airport was built in 1936. Intended to be a large commercial airport, it instead became a base for military operations during World War II and then the Korean War.

In 1966, Boeing took over the airport to build the plant for its 747 operations (the 747โ€™s maiden flight was in 1969). Boeing still occupies the airport as well as other businesses including Aviation Technical Services, one of our maintenance vendors.

Alaska Airlines: We fly greener

Alaska Airlines has made this announcement on its blog (blog.alaskair.com):

With more than 1,200 flights transporting more than 130,000 passengers every day, we are conscious of our environmental footprint. Weโ€™re always looking for ways to reduce the burden we place on the planet from eliminating plastic straws on our flights to partnering with Neste, a leading producer of renewable fuels.

But itโ€™s hard to wrap your head around tens of millions of tiny straws or visualize millions of gallons of fuel. The truth is, the numbers in our latest Sustainability Report add up to make a difference.

We did the math to see how far those straws would reach if we lined them up end-to-end, or how many flights we could power with the fuel we saved. Below are our findings.

Alaska Airlines experiments with VR entertainment at 35,000 feet

Alaska Airlines has made this announcement on its blog:

Guests enjoy catching up on the latest movies and TV shows when traveling. The popularity of our streaming and tablet entertainment systems is proof.

For a limited time, weโ€™re taking it a step further by creating a movie theater-like experience at 35,000 ft.

Weโ€™ve partnered with innovative French company SkyLights to pioneer a new immersive virtual reality (VR) headset. Wearing the headset is comparable to having a personal movie screen in front of you. When paired with noise-cancelling headphones, itโ€™s easy to feel like youโ€™re at the movie theater instead of flying.

From September 23-27, First Class guests onboard 10 flights between Boston and Seattle and Boston and San Diego will have a chance to experience it for themselves and offer feedback.

With this trial, Alaska becomes the first airline in North America to trial virtual reality headsets as an inflight entertainment device.

Testing VR headsets is part of our continuous effort to elevate the inflight experience. Already this year, we introduced new, West Coast-inspired food and drink menus, reimagined our lounges with the opening of the Alaska Lounge at JFK featuring a barista, and vastly expanded our streaming entertainment library. Later this year, weโ€™ll unveil our first aircraft to feature our new custom interior with a custom First Class seat design, mood lighting and tablet holders.

First Class guests onboard one of our 10 VR trial flights can choose from a selection of 2D and 3D blockbusters provided by SkyLightsโ€™ partners 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers and EIM. Noteworthy titles include Academy Award winning โ€œThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,โ€ Spielbergโ€™s โ€œReady Player Oneโ€ in 3D, and the family-friendly โ€œFerdinand.โ€ There are also several 360ยฐ immersive experiences that let guests explore different worlds by just slowly moving their head around.

โ€œIโ€™m really excited to see this technology onboard. I was impressed with SkyLightโ€™s Allosky headset early on as itโ€™s the smallest, lightest, and most stylish VR headset in the inflight entertainment market,โ€ said David Scotland, Alaska Airlines Manager of Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity. โ€œThese trials will help us understand how comfortable our guests are using the technology, if they prefer it to our current offerings, and let our flight attendants share feedback about its impact to our inflight service flow.โ€

A member of the SkyLights team will fly on each of the test flights to ensure guests and flight attendants have support. The test is limited to guests traveling in First Class.

โ€œWeโ€™re testing with guests in our First Class cabin as it makes for a nicely contained focus group in the air,โ€ Scotland said. โ€œWeโ€™ve made no official commitments to pursuing VR long-term but this trial will help us shape our future strategy.โ€

Feedback from Guest Advisory Board:

Alaska and SkyLights partnered last year to get feedback from the airlineโ€™s Guest Advisory Board on the headset. Group members include some of our most frequent fliers. Guests were enthusiastic about the potential for using the technology inflight. Feedback from this session led to design tweaks โ€“ including more intuitive buttons for navigating the menu and a wider array of lens adjustment options. As Alaska launches these trials, weโ€™ll monitor if that excitement carries over to the flight experience.

About SkyLights:

SkyLights is an American-French company specializing in immersive in-flight entertainment. The company first showcased the Allosky device, which offers Full HD resolution (1080p per eye), a sleek, lightweight design, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi at the Airline Passenger Experience (APEX) Expo in September 2017.

Alaska Airlines and Neste grow innovative partnership to fly more sustainably

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-890 SSWL N506AS (msn 35690) SEA (Michael B. Ing). Image: 942036.

Alaska Airlines has made this announcement:

As part of Alaska Airlines’ ongoing efforts to fly greener and expand use of sustainable aviation fuels, Neste and Alaska have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). In addition to Alaska’s efforts to increase fuel-efficiency and adopt innovative flight technology, the agreement will allow Neste and Alaska to more closely work together to design, create and implement solutions that lay the groundwork for the wider adoption of renewable fuels within the airline industry.

As the leading U.S. airline on the 2017 Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Alaska recognizes that the move toward sustainable aviation fuels will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce turbine emissions, and potentially provide other performance and operational benefits. The companies share the view that closer collaboration within the industry and with key partners will help create the “lift” necessary to help move aviation in the right direction.

“I am delighted to announce our collaboration with Alaska Airlines. We are forerunners in the area of renewable fuels: Neste as a producer, and Alaska as a pioneer in the testing of renewable jet fuel on commercial flights. By working together, we will find the best solutions to secure the success in reaching Alaska’s goal to ‘fly greener’,” says Kaisa Hietala, Neste’s Executive Vice President in Renewable Products business area.

“At Alaska Airlines, we strive to fly trueโ€”true to our values, and true to the beautiful places and communities we fly to,” said Kirk Myers, Alaska Airlines Director of Sustainability. “We are proud to partner with Neste, the world leader in the production and advancement of renewable jet fuels, to support these efforts to fly more sustainably. This collaboration is another major step toward supporting the health of our communities and ecosystems.”

Alaska, working with other airlines, is addressing the reality of climate change by adopting targets to mitigate CO2 emissions from air transport. The aviation industry has set ambitious targets to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from air transportation, including carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and beyond, and a 50 percent reduction of net aviation CO2 emissions by 2050 relative to 2005 levels.

In addition to the reduction of emissions and as part of its sustainability platform, Alaska is identifying operational efficiencies that will protect the environment. These include efficient aircraft design, optimized approach paths that reduce fuel use, in-cabin recycling and reduced paperwork and paper consumption. Alaska has a long history of pioneering innovative partnerships to lower impact, and this agreement is another positive step.

At present, the only viable replacement for fossil jet fuel as an energy source for commercial aviation is sustainable aviation biofuel. Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel technology has been proven in thousands of commercial flights and can be easily adopted by airlines without the need for additional investments in new jet engines or segregated fuel distribution system. Partnerships between forward-thinking companies like Neste and Alaska will enable the airline industry to continue to connect the world, reduce greenhouse emissions, and ensure a healthy planet and future of flight.

Neste (Helsinki) creates sustainable solutions for transport, business, and consumer needs. Our wide range of renewable products enable our customers to reduce climate emissions. We are the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel refined from waste and residues, introducing renewable solutions also to the aviation and plastics industries. We are also a technologically advanced refiner of high-quality oil products. We want to be a reliable partner with widely valued expertise, research, and sustainable operations.
