British Airways customers can now order food and drink in the air directly to their seat

In flight digital ordering system

  • British Airways has introduced a digital ordering platform for customers to purchase food and drink from its Speedbird Cafรฉ menu in the air, directly to their seat on board
  • The service will initially be available on selected routes from July 19, before rolling out across the rest of the short haul network on flights from LHR*
  • Service will run alongside the airlineโ€™s pre-purchase menu, including items from its Tom Kerridge range

British Airways has today unveiled its new inflight digital ordering platform, giving customers traveling in Euro Traveller the option to order additional snacks and drinks mid-flight, directly to their seat.

The new inflight ordering system will complement the airlineโ€™s current โ€˜Buy Before You Flyโ€™ offering, where customers are encouraged to order from the airlineโ€™s full Speedbird Cafรฉ menu, including items from its Tom Kerridge range, in advance of travel.

The new digital ordering system means that customers who wish to add to an existing pre-order, or for those who did not place an order before travel, can do so at any point during their flight. The proposition will initially be available from July 19 on selected routes before rolling out across other eligible services.

To place an order, customers simply connect to the on board Wi-Fi service free of charge viaย shop.ba.com, click on the โ€˜shopโ€™ option for their flight, and a virtual menu will display the range of drinks and snack options on offer. Orders can be made via all major credit and debit cards or through Avios. The service will be available on most short haul routes operating from LHR**.

British Airwaysโ€™ Speedbird Cafรฉ menu is still available to pre-purchase atย highlifeshop.comย for short haul flights in Euro Traveller, and the airline will also continue to offer a complimentary bottle of water and snack to all customers on board.

The introduction of in-seat ordering follows the successful launch of โ€˜Your Menuโ€™ in British Airwaysโ€™ Heathrow lounges, the new digital table service which requires only the scan of a QR code to enable orders to be delivered to each individual customer.

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Heathrow Airport launch trials for fully vaccinated customers

British Airways made this announcement:

VeriFLY and BA

  • Later this week customers traveling on selected flights from the US, Caribbean and Europe to London Heathrow will be invited to take part in a proving trial to support the Government in lifting some of the most onerous restrictions for travelers arriving from โ€˜amber listโ€™ countries
  • Fully vaccinated travelers of all nationalities will be able to present their Covid-19 credentials in digital or paper format to help prove vaccination status can be quickly and easily checked away from the border and allow safe entry to the UK
  • Anonymized data will be shared with the UK Government at the earliest opportunity, providing real-world insights to support the introduction of a scheme to exempt fully vaccinated passengers from self-isolation
  • Participants will continue to adhere to current restrictions for travelers entering from โ€˜amber listโ€™ countries during the trial period
  • The proof-of-concept aims to support the Government to introduce exemptions for fully vaccinated travelers no later than 19 July, allowing the UK to catch-up with the EU and US, which have already introduced similar schemes
  • Routes including Los Angeles-LAX and New York-JFK have been chosen given Transatlantic air links between the US and UK are vital to re-start business, reunite families and allow people to go on holiday

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Heathrow Airport have joined forces to prove itโ€™s possible to quickly and easily verify those arriving into the UK who are fully vaccinated โ€“ an identification process already in place for outbound travel to several countries. Earlier this week, Germany became the latest country to confirm it would accept fully vaccinated UK travelers without the need to quarantine. The new UK proving trial, enabling inbound travelers to present their fully vaccinated status, will support the Government to move forward with its plans to remove quarantine for double jabbed passengers entering the UK from โ€˜amber listโ€™ countries.

The initiative will see fully vaccinated volunteers traveling on selected flights from Athens, Los Angeles, Montego Bay and New York to London Heathrow showing proof of their vaccine status. The trial aims to reassure Government that airlines and airports can check vaccine status upstream and away from the Border, ensuring no further pressure in UK immigration halls. Those taking part in the trial will be able to use a dedicated arrivals lane at the border and British Airways customers will be able to access a discounted rate for the mandatory arrivals tests.

Internationally recognized vaccination credentials will be accepted in the proving trial including the NHS app, CDC card, US state-level digital certification and EU Digital Covid Credential. British Airways will also support customersโ€™ vaccine verification through the VeriFLY app and Virgin Atlantic customers can verify their vaccine certificate through a new digital uploader tool, developed in partnership with Delta Air Lines and backed by TrustAssureโ„ข technology. As the proof-of-concept develops, the options for customers to show vaccine status will rapidly be expanded, across physical, digital and integrated formats, including IATA Travel Pass.

The UK has led the world with its successful vaccine program, which the Government promised would lead to the end of Covid restrictions. To date, 86% of UK adults have had a first dose of a Covid vaccine, with 64% fully vaccinated. Data from Public Health England has shown two doses of the vaccines offer 79% protection against becoming ill from the Delta variant and reduces the likelihood of needing hospitalization by 96%.

Despite this incredible achievement the UK is failing to reap the economic and social rewards, falling behind countries like France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta, all of which accept fully vaccinated travelers, including US residents, without the need for quarantine. The US also allows its fully vaccinated residents to avoid self-isolation. The Governmentโ€™s own transparency data also continues to show very low positivity in test results from โ€˜greenโ€™ and โ€˜amberโ€™ country arrivals, with just 0.4% testing positive, and none of them had a variant of concern.

Representatives from the travel industry have been clear about the consequences for the UKโ€™s economy and jobs of not opening the corridor quickly enough, with hundreds taking part in a day of action on June 23. Today, Heathrow released new research from CEBR, reinforcing the importance of aviation to the Governmentโ€™s ambitions for Global Britain, which could help industry deliver a ยฃ204 billion trade boost to benefit every corner of the UK. Heathrow has warned that this cannot be realized unless the UKโ€™s aviation industry is supported by Government policies to resume flying as soon as possible. By capitalizing on the countryโ€™s vaccine dividend, ministers can help to deliver this economic stimulus for exporters across Britain, ensuring the UK retains its competitive edge as the country comes out of lockdown.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson restated that this important step to exempt fully vaccinated travelers from self-isolation would happen โ€˜later this summerโ€™, with Transport Secretary Grant Shapps set to provide more detail this week. Itโ€™s hoped the proof-of-concept will encourage the Government to introduce exemptions for fully vaccinated travelers no later than 19 July, allowing the UK to catch-up with the EU and US, which have already introduced similar schemes.

Transatlantic airlines CEOs assemble and call for the re-opening of transatlantic travel

The CEOs of all airlines that offer UK-US passenger services โ€“ American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic joined on June 7 with Heathrow Airport and other industry-leading CEOs in calling for the re-opening of transatlantic travel, a move that will be essential to igniting economic recovery.

Top leaders in aviation and travel came together ahead of the G7 meeting in Cornwall later to push for the reopening of the UK โ€“ US travel corridor. With world-leading vaccination programs in both the UK and US, there is a clear opportunity to safely open up travel between these two low-risk countries, enabling consumers on both sides of the Atlantic to reconnect with loved ones, re-establish business relationships and explore new destinations after more than a year of lockdowns and restrictions. The CEOs urged both governments to take a data-driven and risk-based approach to re-opening borders to travel.

A line-up of American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, British Airways CEO and Chairman Sean Doyle, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian, Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye, JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes, United CEO Scott Kirby, U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow and Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss joined forces at the panel event, hosted by Duncan Edwards, Chief Executive of BritishAmerican Business.

The participants spoke up after more than a year of travel restrictions that have deeply impacted the global economy and trade and tourism between the two countries. They discussed the merits of having the US on the UKโ€™s โ€˜green listโ€™, which means travelers from the US would no longer need to self-isolate on arrival in the UK, as well as the benefits that would arise from the US lifting the UK-related travel ban (the so-called 212(f) order) order to open up the transatlantic corridor for UK residents to enter the US. The US is the UKโ€™s largest trading partner and UK businesses are losing ยฃ23 million each day that transatlantic links remain closed.ย  In 2019, 900,000 tonnes of cargo also travelled between the two countries.

In the US, 63.5 percent of adults have received at least one dose, while about half of adults โ€“ 139 million people have been fully vaccinated. In the UK, almost 68 million have received shots โ€“ more than 75% of the countryโ€™s adult population. Studies show that the vaccine programs in both countries are successfully reducing transmission and the severity of infection, plus fighting variants, and case counts in both countries continue to decline rapidly.

Shai Weiss, CEO, Virgin Atlantic commented: โ€œThere is no reason for the US to be absent from the UK โ€˜Greenโ€™ list. This overly cautious approach fails to reap the benefits of the successful vaccination programs in both the UK and the US. While transatlantic links with the US are restricted, itโ€™s costing UK economy ยฃ23 million each day. We urge Prime Minister Johnson and President Biden to lead the way in opening the skies, making it a top priority at the G7 Summit. Customers, families and businesses need to book and travel with confidence. After 15 months of restrictions, the time to act is now.โ€

Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO, British Airways said:ย โ€œAs President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Boris Johnson meet this week, they must address the transatlantic ban that is separating our two low-risk countries at a major cost to our citizens and economies. We urgently need them to look to the science and base their judgements on a proper risk analysis, allowing us all to benefit from the protection offered by our successful vaccine rollouts. In the UK this means making the traffic light system fit for purpose, including a pathway to restriction-free travel for vaccinated travellers, and getting rid of complexity surrounding โ€˜amber listโ€™ countries, eliminating quarantine and reducing the number of tests passengers are required to take.โ€

John Holland-Kaye, CEO, Heathrow said: โ€œConnectivity between the UK and the US is one of the great engines of the global economy. The scientific data shows transatlantic travel and trade can be reopened safely and every day that policymakers delay puts jobs, livelihoods and the economic chances of hardworking folks across our countries at risk unnecessarily. We cannot continue to keep locked-up indefinitely. Politicians should seize on the successful vaccination programs in our two countries to begin looking to a future where we manage COVID rather than letting it manage us.โ€

“As we see people reclaiming their lives and reconnecting with loved ones, itโ€™s clear that the infection rates of our countries indicate an extraordinarily low risk to travel between the US the UK, provided travelers are vaccinated or can produce a negative PCR test prior to boarding a flight,โ€ย said Ed Bastian, CEO, Delta Air Lines.ย โ€œOur modeling studies conducted with Mayo Clinic put the risk of transmission on a plane traveling between the UK and US at 1 in 1 million.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re proud of the measures American and others have taken to navigate the pandemic and ensure we deliver a safe, healthy and enjoyable experience for customers as they return to travel,โ€ย said Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO of American Airlines.ย โ€œReopening travel between the US and UK is a critical next step in both the travel industry and the global economyโ€™s recovery. With vaccine availability continuing to expand, we know that our business and leisure customers are increasingly eager to cross the Atlantic, and we know that when they do, it will provide a major boost to the economies in the US, UK and around the world. We look forward to continuing to work with both governments as they make this important decision.โ€

โ€œThroughout the pandemic, experts have encouraged governments, businesses and the public to follow the science,โ€ย said Unitedโ€™s CEO, Scott Kirby.ย โ€œUnited and other airlines have done just that and implemented the necessary safety protocols to confidently re-open key international routes like the air corridor between our two countries.ย Programs like the trials of COVID-free flights between Newark and Heathrow and the US Department of Defense air filtration study conducted on board United aircraft not only contributed to the body of scientific knowledge, they have demonstrated the near non-existent rates of viral transmission aboard an aircraft. And now, through mobile app, travelers can upload verified test results and vaccine records before international travel.ย All this with the successful leadership of vaccination efforts by both governments, no interests are served by delaying re-opening of these essential air routes any longer.ย We are ready.โ€

โ€œThe surge in travel in recent weeks has been remarkable as case counts fall and vaccination rates rise and weโ€™re confident that demand for travel between the US and the UK would follow a similar recovery pattern with an established travel corridor between the two countries,โ€ย said Robin Hayes, Chief Executive Officer, JetBlue.ย โ€œAs international destinations have opened to travelers across our Latin America and Caribbean network and traveling has been made easier with fewer border restrictions, weโ€™ve seen a notable uptick in the number of people flying to these destinations. Data has shown that people can travel safely when certain health and safety protocols remain in place and we believe the UK should implement revised border restrictions similar to those that have already been successful in many other countries.โ€

A recent York Aviation report stated that a second โ€˜lost summerโ€™ of international travel would result in ยฃ55.7bn in lost trade and ยฃ3.0bn in tourism GDP if reopening is delayed until September. If international travel remains restricted, it will cost the US economy $325 billion in total losses and 1.1 million jobs by the end of 2021, according to analysis from the U.S. Travel Association.

โ€œThe millions of travel-supported US jobs lost to the pandemic cannot be replaced without the return of international visitors, and the UK is our No. 1 overseas travel market,โ€ย said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow.ย โ€œAdvancing a science-driven approach to restart international travel is crucial, and a US-UK corridor is a logical place to start because of the two countriesโ€™ excellent records on vaccinations and declining infections, as well as their strong relationship.โ€

The group has encouraged the US government to consider lifting entry requirements for UK travellers who have provided a negative COVID test ahead of arriving in the US or are fully vaccinated or can present proof of recovery.

On the UK side, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was asked to consider removing the need for travellers returning to the UK from โ€˜green listโ€™ countries to complete an expensive and time-consuming PCR test on their arrival, instead calling for lateral flow tests, used in care homes and schools, with only positive tests requiring a PCR test.

British Airways to trial the IATA Travel Pass

Airlines are now gravitating to the IATA Travel Pass for international travel.

British Airways has now joined this group with this announcement:

  • British Airways will initially trial IATA Travel Pass on flights from London to Zurich and Geneva
  • The airlineโ€™s parent company International Airlines Group, has been working with IATA, the association for the worldโ€™s airlines, to co-develop its Travel Pass app
  • The new travel pass is added to two other digital solutions being tested by the airline as it continues to seek out the best solutions for its customers to ensure frictionless travel
  • VeriFLY, an alternative app already being used by the airline, also continues to evolve as the airline works with testing suppliers to automatically upload results into the app and enable online check-in once documents are verified

British Airways will begin trialling digital travel solution, IATA Travel Pass, on flights from Heathrow to Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland from today, June 1.

The app can be downloaded onto a mobile device directly from the app store. Once downloaded, customers will create a secure account and will be presented with the entry requirements for their destination. British Airwaysโ€™ customers can then book a Covid-19 test with an approved provider* and the results will be automatically uploaded into the app by the laboratory.

The app then checks that a customer meets the entry requirements for their destination and will then notify the customer to let them know that they are ready to travel. The airlineโ€™s parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG), has been working closely with IATA to co-develop the app that is now being successfully piloted by other global airlines, including British Airwaysโ€™ sister airline Iberia.

Sean Doyle, British Airwaysโ€™ Chairman and CEO, said โ€œWe are committed to exploring ways to ensure that the customer journey is as frictionless as possible and sharing our learnings to help the travel industry take off again.

โ€œWe know that digital travel passes are part of the solution and they will also play a key role in offering those traveling the reassurance they need before they arrive at the airport. We hope to be able to offer a customer-friendly digital option for every British Airways international route that requires proof of government mandated Covid status documentation.โ€

British Airways is also currently trialling digital travel app, VeriFLY, on routes to the US, France, Ireland, Barbados, Bahamas and Canada, as well as all inbound international flights. Once a customer has had their travel documentation certified through the app they will be able to check-in through eitherย ba.comย or the British Airways app and download their boarding pass before arriving at the airport.

The airlineโ€™s customers travelling toย Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugalย can now also upload their negative Covid-19 test result and other documentation directly intoย ba.comย for verification before travel.

British Airways continues its relief flights to India

British Airways has made this announcement:

  • British Airways and its sister company IAG Cargo partner with Air bp, NATS, HAL and Indian ground handlers to support the humanitarian relief effort spearheaded by charities including Oxfam, Khalsa Aid, LPSUK and Christian Aid
  • Boeing 777-200 cargo aircraft full of critical care equipment, PPE and oxygen concentrators
  • 10 days needed to plan, load and fly plane full of vital equipment

A British Airways relief flight has touched down in India for the second time in two weeks as the crisis continues to grip India.ย  The cargo only flight (BA257F) departed London at 5pm on Friday, May 21 and landed in Delhi at 5.45am (local time) this morning.

The total weight of the medical aidย was 18 tonnes, made up of five thousand pieces.ย  Amongst the medical equipment were hundreds of oxygen concentrators fromย charities including Oxfam, Khalsa Aid, Christian Aid and LPSUK.ย  Fuel partner, Air bp supported the flight and British Airwaysย has ensured the flight is carbon offset.

British Airways and IAG Cargo haveย continued to keepย vital air links open between London and Indiaย throughout the pandemic,ย sendingย aidย on scheduled flights,ย but this is a special charter that has been funded by British Airways, Air bp, NATS, HAL and Indian ground handlers.ย  Over the last 10 days, British Airways has been coordinating with charities and aviation partners both in the UK and India to plan the meticulous load of this aircraft.

Oxford study confirms a comprehensive Covid-19 testing program can help re-open international travel

The results of aย joint testing trialย conducted by American Airlines, British Airways and theย oneworld Alliance shows that a comprehensive Covid-19 testing program can help re-open international travel, safely. This is underpinned by analysis from researchers at the University of Oxford, who studied data on how passengers evaluate risk and comply with Covid-19 rules.

The study by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII),ย ‘Trust, Testing and Travel, Technology Use, Traveller Knowledge and Compliance with COVID-19 Health Rulesโ€™, analysed aggregated survey data from almost 600 travelers who took part in the voluntary testing trial on select flights from the U.S. to London Heathrow (LHR), between November 2020 and March 2021. The trial offered three complimentary COVID-19 tests, taken throughout the transatlantic journey.

Customers participating in the trial, conducted in two phases, took an initial PCR test at 72 hours prior to departure; a second test (LAMP) upon arrival at London Heathrow (LHR); and a third test (PCR) taken three to five days after arrival in the UK.

In the trialโ€™s first phase, just 1% of travelers who took a test within 72 hours of their departure tested positive and, as a result of the test, they did not travel. None of the travelers who took a test upon arrival at LHR tested positive. Of the travelers who took the third test after arriving in the UK, just 0.4%, of travelers tested positive.

The analysis by researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute suggests that the testing trial results were โ€œbroadly consistentโ€ with earlier testing trial programmes in the aviation industry.

Importantly, 99.7% of travelers said they were happy to adhere to COVID-19 testing requirements as an alternative to quarantine after international travel and are prepared to pay for affordable testing.

Almost 70% of travelers said they would travel if required to take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to departure. The same number said they would be willing to take a COVID-19 test before departure as well as after arrival. More than 70% of travelers said they would be likely to travel if required to take a test at the airport before departure, and about 75% of travelers are willing to be tested at the airport upon arrival at their destination.

Asked what they would be prepared to pay, nearly 80% of travelers said they would pay for COVID-19 testing, with the majority prepared to pay US$ 50 (ยฃ35) or less for each test. Only 15% of travelers are prepared to pay more than US$ 100 (ยฃ70) for COVID-19 testing.

Findings of the Oxford study will be shared with governments and stakeholders, in an important addition to the growing body of knowledge that shows how comprehensive COVID-19 testing can provide governments the confidence they need to lift entry restrictions and allow travel to safely resume.

Prof Philip Howard, Professor of Internet Studies at Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, said: โ€œAs many countries make progress on vaccinating their citizens the debate over reopening travel safely is becoming increasingly important. Iโ€™m pleased our team has been able to make a contribution to this discussion through this detailed analysis of passenger sentiment and behaviour.โ€

In a joint statement on the Oxford findings, American Airlines, British Airways andย oneworld said: โ€œThe Oxford study further reinforces that customers are willing to undergo COVID-19 testing as an alternative to quarantine. The trial findings underline the important role that testing can play in the safe reopening of international travel, including hugely significant routes between the U.S. and UK. The affordability of testing is crucial for travelers, and we stand ready to partner with governments and the private sector to offer affordable testing options for our customers who would like or need to travel again.โ€

British Airways introduces “power nap pods” in its “Forty Winks Lounge”

‘Forty Winks’ nap lounge

  • To support customersโ€™ health and wellbeing pre-flight, British Airways has launched a new โ€™Forty Winksโ€™ nap lounge, which opened on May 17
  • Complimentary and self-service via the โ€˜Your Menuโ€™ lounge app – customers do not need to pre-book
  • The โ€™Forty Winksโ€™ lounges will also feature in the Concorde Room at London Heathrow Terminalย 5 and New Yorkโ€™s JFK Terminalย 7 when global travel restrictions ease

British Airways has this week unveiled its latest lounge enhancement, the new โ€™Forty Winksโ€™ nap lounge, featuring power nap sleep pods.

The new pods are currently available in British Airwaysโ€™ First Lounge at London Heathrow. The airline will then be adding these sleep pods to its Concorde Room at London Heathrow Terminalย 5 and New Yorkโ€™s JFK Terminalย 7 when global travel restrictions ease and those lounges open.

Introduced in partnership with Restworks, the โ€˜Forty Winksโ€™ lounge allows customers in need of some pre-flight shuteye the chance to power nap in a dedicated EnergyPod.

The EnergyPod is the worldโ€™s first chair designed exclusively for power napping. With its unique combination of gravity neutral positioning and privacy visor, the EnergyPod is the premiere nap pod for short rest in the workplace. By providing nap pods for rest in its First and Concorde lounges, British Airways is supporting customer wellbeing and helping beat jetlag while on the move.

The Heathrow First Class โ€˜Forty Winksโ€™ lounge is complimentary and operates on a self-service basis so customers do not need to pre-book. There are seven pods available and customers can use the โ€˜Your Menuโ€™ lounge app to check if a pod is available in real time. This information will also be available on a screen outside the Forty Winks entrance. As part of the airlineโ€™s ongoing commitment to keep customers and colleagues safe, Dettol hand sanitiser stations will be positioned in the nap lounges, and Dettol antibacterial wipes will be used to keep the pod surfaces clean after each use.

Customers can set the timer on the EnergyPod to the desired duration or use the one-touch start button for a perfect pre-programmed 20-minute nap. The EnergyPod reclines to elevate the feet and promote relaxation. The adjustable privacy visor can be swiveled into place to block out distractions. Complimentary audio content for use while in the lounge and traveling can be downloaded via the Restworks Mobile app.

When open,ย Concorde Room customers will be able book an EnergyPod via dedicated hosts, request a time they would like to be woken and choose a hot beverage to enjoy after their rest. Water and hot towels will be provided to add to the refreshing awakening experience.

Tom Stevens, British Airwaysโ€™ Director of Brand and Customer Experience, said:ย โ€œWe canโ€™t wait to welcome our customers back after a very difficult year, and weโ€™re always looking for new ideas to support our customersโ€™ health and wellbeing pre-flight.

โ€œIn late 2019 we carried out a survey of over 100,000 lounge guests asking what they would like to see featured in our lounges. Sleep pods were right at the top of their list. Our โ€™Forty Winksโ€™ nap lounges will offer a dedicated rejuvenation space for customers as they return to the skies, all self-serviced via the โ€˜Your Menuโ€™ lounge app. Beating jetlag and catching a snooze on the go has never been easier!โ€

Christopher Lindholst, Restworksโ€™ Global Managing Director, said: โ€œBeing able to rest while travelling is an important way to stay healthy and energised, and what better way to use your dwell time than to catch up on some sleep. ย We are excited British Airways is making this important investment in customer wellbeing.โ€

Currently the First lounge is open to all lounge-eligible customers, giving those who are travelling in Club World a chance to try the innovative new sleep pods.
