Continental Airlines to start Newark-Stuttgart flights on June 9

Continental Airlines (Houston) today announced that it will launch daily nonstop service between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and Stuttgart, Germany, effective on June 9, 2011 (eastbound), subject to government approval.

Stuttgart will be the fifth German city to be served by the new United, formed last year by the merger of Continental and United Airlines.

The Newark-Stuttgart service will be operated by Boeing 757-200 aircraft, featuring 175 seats โ€“ 16 in BusinessFirst and 159 in Economy.

Continental Airlines postpones the launch of the Newark-Cairo route

Continental Airlines (Houston) has postponed the launch of the Newark-Cairo route previously scheduled to start on May 18. Due to the political unrest in Egypt, demand for the route has decreased.

Continental Airlines launches Austin-Cancun flights

Continental Airlines (Houston) starting on February 19, 2011, inaugurated nonstop service from Austin to Cancun.

Continentalโ€™s weekly Austin-Cancun nonstop will be flown on a Boeing 737-700 with 112 in coach and 12 in first class.

United Airlines to retain Economy Plus, will add to Continental aircraft

United Continental Holdings, Inc. (Chicago) has announced that it will retain United’s Economy Plusยฎ seating on United flights and expand the option to Continental aircraft beginning in 2012.

United offers Economy Plus on all 359 mainline aircraft and more than 150 larger regional jets operated by United Expressยฎ carriers. When the multi-year conversion process is complete, the company plans to offer Economy Plus on more than 700 mainline aircraft, including all Continental mainline aircraft, as well as larger regional aircraft. When fully deployed, the new United’s fleet will include more than 40,000 Economy Plus seats, providing more than 122,000 Economy Plus seats each day.

In other news,ย Continental Airlines inaugurated today (February 18) nonstop flights between itsย New Yorkย hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islandsย (PLS). ย Initially the flights will operate four times a week, on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, converting to daily service onย March 6, 2011.

The approximately three-and-a-half-hour flight (CO 610) will departย Newarkย atย 9:35 a.m. (0935), arriving in Providenciales atย 1:10 p.m. (1310). The return flight (CO 609) will depart Providenciales atย 2:05 p.m. (1405), arriving in Newarkย atย 5:45 p.m. (1745). Continental will utilize a Boeing 737-800 for the new service with seating for 160 passengers (16 in first class and 144 in economy).

United Continental Holdings distributes $224 million in profit sharing to its employees

United Continental Holdings, Inc. (Chicago) will distribute $224 million in profit-sharing to employees today based on 2010 profits.

CEO Smisek will hand out profit-sharing checks today at the airline’s hubs at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Other United officers will travel to many other locations throughout the new United’s system to distribute profit-sharing checks to co-workers.

In addition to profit-sharing, the new United’s employees receive cash payments for reaching on-time performance goals. The on-time incentive program pays co-workers up to $100 monthly when the combined airline hits targets for domestic and international on-time arrivals. The program reinforces the new United’s commitment to working together to deliver outstanding performance for its customers.

United-Continental to cut up to 500 jobs in Houston

Continental Airlines (Houston) is planning to cut up to 500 jobs at its Houston headquarters.

The cuts would be management and salaried positions according to this report by Reuters.

United Continental Holdings has a profitable fourth quarter and 2010

United Continental Holdings, Inc. (Chicago) today announced fourth-quarter and pro forma full-year 2010 financial results. UAL results for the fourth quarter include the financial results of its two operating subsidiaries, United Airlines and Continental Airlines. Prior to the merger on October 1, 2010, UAL results only included the financial results of United Airlines. Pro forma results that consolidate the financial results for Continental for periods prior to October 1, 2010, are included for meaningful year-over-year comparisons.

UAL reported fourth-quarter 2010 net income of $160 million or $0.44 diluted earnings per share excluding $485 million of special items consisting primarily of merger-related costs and other special charges, an improvement of $347 million compared to the pro forma results year-over-year. On a GAAP basis, UAL reported fourth-quarter net loss of $325 million or $1.01 diluted loss per share.

UAL reported pro forma full-year 2010 net income of $1.6 billion excluding $765 million of special items, resulting in a net margin of 4.8 percent. On a GAAP basis, UAL reported full-year 2010 net income of $253 million.

Continental Airlines to start Newark-Port-au-Prince flights

Continental Airlines (Houston) will begin nonstop flights between its New York hub, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (PAP), on June 9, 2011, subject to government approval.

Initially flights will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, converting to daily service on July 1, 2011.

The approximately four-hour flight (CO 703) will depart Newark at 9:25 a.m. (0925), arriving in Port-Au-Prince at 12:15 p.m. (1215). The return flight (CO 704) will depart Port-Au-Prince at 1:20 p.m. (1320), arriving in Newark at 6:15 p.m. (1815). Continental will utilize a Boeing 737-800 for the new service, with seating for 160 passengers (16 in first class and 144 in economy).

United/Continental to fly Los Angeles-Guadalajara

United Airlines (Chicago) today announced daily nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Guadalajara, Mexico (GDL), beginning on May 3, subject to Mexican government approval. This service will be operated by Continental Airlines (Houston).

Flight CO 672 will depart Los Angeles at 8:20 a.m. (0820) daily, arriving in Guadalajara at 1:15 p.m. (1315). The return flight (CO 673) departs Guadalajara at 2:10 p.m. (1410) daily, arriving in Los Angeles at 3:30 p.m. (1530). The Los Angeles โ€“ Guadalajara service will be operated with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with seating for 160 customers (16 in first class and 144 in economy).

SkyWest Airlines to fly CRJ700s to Houston with the UA code

SkyWest Airlines (United Express) (St. George) due to the recent arbitrator’s decision in the scope clause dispute between the mainline CO pilots and Continental Airlines (Houston), today will begin flying into the Houston (Bush Intercontinental) hub under the UA code.

With the upcoming merger of the two AOCs, will the United AOC now be the surviving AOC due to the Continental 70-seat scope clause? United does not have a 70-seat prohibition in its pilot’s contract.
