Lufthansa and Eurowings introduce further physical distancing measures

Lufthansa has made this announcement:

  • Neighbouring seat blocked on all flights from Germanyย
  • Arrivals and departures only at gate positions in Germany where possibleย
  • New measures coordinated between German Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer and Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG

Lufthansa and Eurowings are introducing further measures to ensure physical distance between passengers during their journey. From tomorrow, March 27, 2020, neighboring seats on board in Economy Class and Premium Economy will be blocked and remain free on all flights from Germany. This also applies to flights within Germany.

This regulation does not apply on flights to Germany, because the airlines top priority remains returning as many people as possible to their home country.

In addition, from now on all Lufthansa and Eurowings flights at domestic airports will only be handled at building positions wherever possible given the existing airport infrastructure and official regulations. This measure intends to help pas-sengers avoid having to take bus trips. Where this is not possible at short notice, twice as many buses will be operating, which has also been the case for the last few days.

Both measures will apply until April 19, 2020.

Lufthansa and Eurowings have already taken numerous measures to increase the distance between passengers along the entire travel chain, for example at check-in counters or when boarding and disembarking from the aircraft. The service on board has also been adapted regarding the current physical distancing measures.

Eurowings makes BASIC fare even more attractive

Eurowings has made this announcement:

For most of our BASIC customers, a reasonable price is the most important criterion when booking a flight. For this reason, Eurowings is offering a revised BASIC fare for short- and medium-haul flights for price-sensitive customers from March 2020, in which individual service components will be redesigned. This will make the BASIC “entry-level” fare even more competitive in terms of price. As a particularly favorable fare, it will stand out more strongly than before from the SMART fare. As an introduction from March 3 to March 15, Eurowings is launching a price campaign, during which BASIC fare flights will be offered 20 percent cheaper.

In the new BASIC fare, customers can take a large piece of luggage (55x40x23 cm) on board as before. The second piece of luggage is no longer automatically included in the new BASIC fare. Existing bookings are not affected by the new hand baggage policy. BASIC customers will be able to flexibly add the second piece of luggage online if required. Another new feature is that BASIC customers will also be able to flexibly book priority boarding in future. Regular surveys show that this service is highly appreciated by customers.

With the new BASIC fare, customers will only pay for those service components that they explicitly request and can thus fly at highly attractive conditions. Each additional service can be booked flexibly. What’s more: our statistics show hand baggage is one of the main drivers of delays, such as when individual pieces of hand baggage have to be loaded after boarding. The newly designed BASIC fare with reduced hand baggage makes a decisive contribution to further minimizing these delay drivers – and all Eurowings customers benefit from this. Thanks to optimized hand baggage processes, among other things, Eurowings was among the ten most punctual airlines in Europe in 2019. Passengers greatly appreciate this, which is reflected in current customer satisfaction figures at record levels at Eurowings.

Eurowings will also optimize its check-in processes at airports in the future: from March 2020 Eurowings will ask its BASIC customers to check in for their flights exclusively online. This will lead to significantly reduced queues at the airports, which in turn will save our customers valuable time. BASIC passengers who would like to continue checking-in at the airport can of course book this option flexibly in advance as an additional service. With online check-in and the associated storage of contact data, Eurowings can, for example, inform and support its customers quickly, clearly and comprehensively by SMS and e-mail in the event of flight irregularities. Eurowings customers who have booked the SMART or BIZclass fare can still check-in at the airport free of charge. The hand baggage rules also remain unchanged for them.

The BASIC fare is the “entry” fare at Eurowings. In addition to the BASIC fare, customers can also choose between the SMART and the BIZclass fare. These fares are specifically tailored to personal customer needs and offer the greatest possible flexibility: the SMART fare already offers numerous included services โ€“ such as a desired seat, priority boarding and two pieces of hand luggage on board. In addition, further additional services, such as the Flex option (rebooking until the web check-in is closed) can be added.

In other news,ย Eurowings has started punctually into the year 2020. With an on-time performance of 93 percent in January 2020, Eurowings was the most punctual airline in a comparison of European competitors, with a clear lead over competitors of comparable size such as Ryanair, Easyjet and Wizz Air. This is confirmed by data from the independent British data provider Official Airline Guide (OAG).

Especially at its home airports Dรผsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart, Eurowings was significantly more reliable than its competitors. The second largest German airline would have been even more punctual if there had been no limitations due to weather and air traffic control problems. However, thanks to changes in processes of Eurowingsโ€™ “Scope” optimization program, Eurowings was able to significantly soften the impact of external factors and thus avoid consequential delays for its passengers.

The airline thereby confirms a trend that has been continuing for months and has now put Eurowings at the top of the European competition. The very good performance is attributable to numerous measures with which Eurowings has been ensuring the best possible punctuality and stability in flight operations since the end of 2018. Passengers greatly appreciate this, which is reflected in record levels of customer satisfaction at Eurowings.

German cabin crew union (UFO) to strike Germanwings

Germanwings’ cabin crew union (UFO) will strike the carrier from Monday to Wednesday next week.

Germanwings operates its aircraft for Eurowings.

Eurowings issued this statement:

The UFO organization has called the cabin crew of Germanwings flight operations to a three-day strike from December 30, 2019, 00:00 hours, to Wednesday, January 1, 2020, 24:00 hours. This strike is unfounded and incomprehensible to us.

Eurowings wants to minimize the impact of the strike on its passengers and is preparing a special flight schedule for the strike period, which will be published on Saturday afternoon. It should be noted that only 30 of the approximately 140 Eurowings aircrafts are operated by Germanwings.

Santorini belongs to the archipelago of the Cyclades. Its origin goes back to an earthquake of about 1500 years ago, as a result of which the popular holiday home arose from the volcanic lava. Today, one still finds many beaches with black or red sand. Typical for Santorini are its pretty white buildings and the many churches with half-spherical blue domes.

Austrian Airlines to take over some Eurowings routes from Vienna

Austrian Airlines has made this announcement:

Austrian Airlines and Eurowings are repositioning themselves in Austria and reinforce their cooperation. The common goal is to strengthen the Vienna hub and expand decentralised traffic from the Austrian federal states.

Austrian Airlines will be responsible for network planning at the Vienna hub in order to improve the management of transfer traffic. As of January 1, 2020, Eurowings will deploy four aircraft including crews in wet lease for Austrian Airlines.

At the same time, Eurowings will strongly expand its presence at Salzburg Airport and increase the number of Airbus A319 aircraft stationed in the City of Mozart to a total of three. Furthermore, Eurowings will expand its leisure flight program from Innsbruck Airport offering full charter flights to warm-water destinations. Thereby Eurowings is pursuing its strategy of consistently concentrating on decentralized routes i.e. point-to-point flight traffic. Today Eurowings is already number one at four major German airports, namely Dรผsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart.

Within the context of the closer collaboration of the two airlines, the following destinations will be offered in the route network of Austrian Airlines as of January 2020: two daily flights will be operated to Barcelona (expansion from twelve to 14 weekly flights). Birmingham will be served up to once daily (increase from four to seven flights per week). Up to two flights will be operated every day to Nuremberg (twelve weekly flights instead of eleven), and frequencies to Rome will rise to three daily flights (21 flights each week instead of twelve). Up to one daily flight will be offered to Zadar (thus raising the number of weekly flights from two to seven). The leisure flight program (of Austrian and Eurowings) of summer 2020 will be published at a later date.

Check-in for all these flights will take place at Austrian Airlines in Terminal 3 at Vienna Airport in the future. The existing scheduled flight connections of Eurowings between Vienna and Dรผsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart and Cologne will remain part of the Eurowings route network and will be operated out of Germany as in the past. These flights will continue to take off from Terminal 1 in Vienna.

For Austrian Airlines, this step provides added impetus to its #DriveTo25 strategy. The ten additional A320 aircraft already announced earlier this year will be complemented by four wet lease aircraft from Eurowings. In January, Austrian Airlines reported that it would phase out its smaller turboprop aircraft by 2021 and increase its medium-haul Airbus fleet from 36 to 46 airplanes. This change in the fleet composition is currently being implemented. The first of the ten A320 aircraft is planned to land in Vienna shortly. The 37th Airbus will take off on behalf of Austrian Airlines starting in December.

Austrian Airlines gradually reorganizes its decentralized routes

In connection with the strategic concentration on its home airport in Vienna, the decision was made by Austrian Airlines to reorganize decentralized routes between the Austrian federal states and Germany.

In an initial step, Austrian Airlines is reorganizing flight operations on the Salzburg-Frankfurt and Graz-Frankfurt routes within the Lufthansa Group and will likely transfer responsibility for these routes to Lufthansa at the turn of the year 2019/2020. The new flight connections can be booked as of October 23, 2019. The number of flights on these two routes will not change: In the upcoming winter flight schedule, a total of 28 weekly flights will be offered linking Salzburg and Frankfurt, whereas 26 flights will be operated between Graz and Frankfurt each week. The previous flight times will be maintained with the exception of a few small adjustments.

However, overall seating capacity between Salzburg and Frankfurt will increase due to the fact that Lufthansa will deploy Airbus A319 and thus larger aircraft than has been the case up until now. A mix of Airbus A319, Embraer 190 and Bombardier CRJ900 jets will be deployed on the Graz-Frankfurt route. Total seating capacity on this route will remain unchanged. In the future, Austrian Airlines will make use of two Embraer aircraft currently stationed in Salzburg and Graz for flights departing from Vienna to destinations in its European route network.

Eurowings increases frequencies from Dรผsseldorf and Hamburg

Eurowings is adding two new flights to its existing direct services from Dรผsseldorf to Barcelona and will thus be operating the route daily from June 1, 2020 and a total of 18 nonstop flights per week.

The connection from Dรผsseldorf to Koลกice, which will be resumed in the 2019/2020 winter schedule, will also continue in the summer timetable. Flights will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from a price of 59.99 euros per route.

There will also be an increased number of flights between Hamburg and Thessaloniki in Greece. With an additional direct connection, passengers will travel six times a week without detour to Thessaloniki from 3 July 2020. These flights can be booked from a one-way price of 49.99 euros.

The Spanish city of Barcelona is world-famous for its architecture. In particular, the Sagrada Famรญlia church and the many Gaudรญ works of art that characterize the cityscape attract countless tourists every year. Located in the northeast of the Iberian peninsula on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the lively metropolis combines beach holiday and sightseeing in an outstanding way.

Koลกice is the second largest city in Slovakia and is located in the east not far from the Hungarian border. It is artistically influenced and is home to numerous museums as well as several theatres. The National Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra is of supra-regional importance. In the centre of Koลกice there are cinemas, bars, pubs and nightclubs. The nearby village of Wolovezkie Werkhi provides access to the mountains, which are ideal for hiking in summer and winter sports in winter.

Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean and the second largest city in the country. Due to its immediate location on the water, it is still considered as an important transhipment point in the Balkans. Lively alleys, numerous bars and restaurants as well as historical buildings form an attractive backdrop for visitors.
