QANTAS to use five Embraer 190s from Alliance Airlines at Adelaide

QANTAS Airways has made this announcement:

  • Qantas to activate a further five E190 jets
  • Aircraft to be based in Adelaide, creating hundreds of jobs
  • New routes, extra 1 million seats in and out of Adelaide

Adelaide will be the home of five Embraer E190 aircraft as Qantas continues to boost domestic flights in response to growing leisure and corporate travel demand.

The E190s are 94-seat jets with a five-hour range which are being deployed on Qantasโ€™ network as part of a three-year deal with Alliance Airlines.ย The deal provides the national carrier with the capacity provided by up to 14 jet aircraft, depending on market conditions. This announcement brings the number of aircraft activated as part of the agreement to eight.

The aircraft will be painted in QantasLink livery and will help Qantas to grow its domestic capacity to 107 per cent of pre-COVID levels in FY22.ย  Jetstar is expected to reach 120 per cent of its pre-COVID capacity as the only dedicated low cost carrier in Australia and the uptick in local leisure demand.

Note: The aircraft will be operated by Alliance Airlines.

The decision means Qantas will launch a new Adelaide-Gold Coast service in time for the winter school holidays.

From June 25, 2021, South Australians will be able to fly direct to the Gold Coast with Qantas, with four return services per week, increasing to daily during school holiday peaks. To celebrate the launch Qantas is offering special fares from $149 one-way*.

A number of additional routes from Adelaide will be announced in the coming weeks.

Qantas will also begin flying between Darwin and Canberra using E190 aircraft from June 21, 2021.

The two new routes bring the total number Qantas and Jetstar have announced since the start of the pandemic to 38, responding to the fact more Australians are holidaying domestically.

The five E190 aircraft can carry almost 1 million additional passengers to-and-from Adelaide each year.

The use of E190s will also free up Qantasโ€™ Boeing 737-800 aircraft to be redeployed across the domestic network. All Qantas domestic crew have returned to flying.

Qantas is also today announcing a number of capacity increases for South Australia, including an additional daily return flight from Adelaide to Sydney and Melbourne.

The national carrier will also more than double services between Adelaide and Mt Gambier from five to 12 flights per week from July 1, 2021.

QANTAS Link unveils its upgraded cabin

QantasLinkโ€™s first upgraded turboprop aircraft on June 26 took to the skies with a refreshed cabin and greater comfort for the airlineโ€™s regional customers.

The upgraded Q300 turboprop was unveiled this morning at QantasLinkโ€™s hangar facility at Tamworth Airport, the airlineโ€™s hub for regional aircraft maintenance. The program to upgrade the fleet of 45 Bombardier Q200, Q300 and Q400 aircraft is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Passengers onboard flight QF2003 from Tamworth to Sydney will be the first QantasLink customers to fly on the upgraded turboprop.

The fleet upgrade is part of a multi-million dollar commitment to providing regional passengers with a better overall travel experience.

The improved turboprop experience includes new ergonomic seat cushioning, leather upholstery, tablet device holders, a refreshed color palette of greys and charcoals and new floor coverings.

Each turboprop aircraft takes around 10 days to upgrade, with up to 13 engineers and project support staff working on each aircraft. The work is timed to coincide with scheduled maintenance and closely aligns the turboprop interiors with those in the QantasLink jet fleet.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the airline was excited to unveil the airlineโ€™s first upgraded turboprop in Tamworth.

โ€œOur turboprop aircraft are a significant part of our network and weโ€™re committed to investing in product and service for regional Australia,โ€ said Mr Gissing.

โ€œWe look forward to welcoming our regional travellers onboard our upgraded turboprop aircraft and offering them a better inflight experience.โ€

UTC Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp., today announced an 8-year contract extension with QANTAS Airways to provide BR715 engine nacelle asset support and repair services for the airline’s fleet of 20 Boeing 717-200 aircraft. The long-term agreement is through Prime Solutionsยฎ, which is customized to the airline’s specific support requirements.

The 20 aircraft are operated by Cobham Aviation under the QANTAS Link banner.

QANTAS Airways has been a Prime Solutionsย customer since 2000, and this new agreement represents an expansion of the existing support program as the airline has nearly doubled its fleet of Boeing 717-200 aircraft to meet increasing passenger demand. With easy access to spares and rotables, and fully customized support, the airline has been able to extend the operational life of its Boeing 717-200 fleet. ย Support will be provided on-site at the customer’s locations in Perth and Canberra, Australia, and the UTC Aerospace Systems Aerostructures Service Center in Singapore.

QANTAS Link partners with universities for the next generation of pilots

QANTAS Airways has issued this statement:

QantasLink has announced a new pilot recruitment program designed to provide the best and brightest aviation students with a flying start to their career.

The โ€œQantas Future Pilot Programโ€ has been designed in collaboration with five universities across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, and is open to aviation students at UNSW, Griffith University, University of Southern Queensland, Swinburne University of Technology and RMIT University.

Students will have the opportunity to be mentored by experienced QantasLink pilots throughout their studies, and, if successful through the selection process, will transition to a job at QantasLink straight after graduation.

Based on current university intakes, the program will be open to a potential pool of 300 students each year.

QantasLink Chief Executive Officer, John Gissing, said the Qantas Future Pilot Program is about building the next generation of exceptional pilots from within Australiaโ€™s top aviation schools and in return providing students with benefits and placement certainty.

โ€œAs the national carrier we have a history of attracting the best and brightest to fly for us. The students chosen for this program will have an enormous head start to their career as a pilot. They will benefit from a direct pathway to Australiaโ€™s largest regional airline and access to our experienced pilots throughout their studies,โ€ Mr Gissing said.

โ€œTogether with these leading universities, this program will arm high-performing motivated students with the skills needed to transition into an airline and provide them with a platform from which to launch their career as a pilot within the Qantas Group.โ€

The Qantas Future Pilot Program will see successful students invited to complete an intensive twelve-week Airline Transition Course at the completion of their degree. Once employed, graduates will complete their training under the supervision of QantasLinkโ€™s experienced training team and become qualified as First Officers flying the airlineโ€™s 74-seat Q400s and 50-seat Q300s. Pilots will later be well-positioned to extend their career with pilot opportunities within the broader Qantas Group of airlines.

The program follows the airlineโ€™s recent launch of its Nancy-Bird Walton Initiative, which will see the Qantas Group commit to a 20 per cent intake of women in its 2018 pilot recruitment programs, with the vision for that number to double over the next decade.ย  By targeting STEM at schools, universities and flying schools the airline will support more girls and women on a path to a career as a pilot within the Qantas Group.

The Qantas Future Pilot Program will launch in January 2018, open to all future and current aviation students at all stages of their degree. Applications are now open and students can visit qantas.com/careers (opens in new window) or their Universityโ€™s faculty website for more information.

The Qantas Future Pilot Program will complement existing recruitment streams, including as a Direct Entry First Officer, or as a Trainee First Officer.

QantasLink has recruited over 100 pilots in the last twelve months. Qantas has recruited around 200 pilots in the last twelve months, with a forecast for that total to reach 300 pilots by mid-2018.
