Alliance Airlines to operate its Fokker 100s for QANTAS Link, especially between Mount Isa and Brisbane

QANTAS Airways has announced Alliance Airlines will take over some of the flights from Mount Isa staring on December 4, 2017 until about March 2018 due to operational performance issues according to The North West Star. Alliance will operate the flights under the QANTAS Link banner but the aircraft are not expected to be repainted.

Solomon Airlines suspends operations

Solomon Airlines suspends operations

Solomon Airlines (Solomons) (Honiara) suspended all domestic and international airline operations on June 7, 2016 over a dispute for promised funding from the Solomon Islands government. CEO Ron Sum Sum said millions of dollars in unpaid government payments had seriously compromised safe airline operations.

The government hopes to reach an agreement with the ailing airline and resume critical operations for the island nation.

QANTAS Link to build a Boeing 717 heavy maintenance base at Canberra, QANTAS celebrates 50 years of trans-Tasman jet services

QANTAS Link has announced that it will create a Boeing 717 heavy maintenance base in Canberra, generating up to 40 highly skilled engineering roles in the nation’s capital.

“From October, Canberra will be at the heart of our Boeing 717 engineering operations, which will complement our increased flying out of Canberra with this aircraft type and allow us to better utilize our existing assets at Canberra Airport,” Mr Gissing said.

Heavy maintenance checks are detailed checks of the aircraft, performed every two years on the Boeing 717. On average, it takes around 28 days and 5500 man hours for a Boeing 717 to have a heavy maintenance check.

This is in addition to line maintenance checks, which are basic checks that are done every few days, and currently performed in ports across Australia, including Canberra. QANTAS Link has 18 Boeing 717-200s in its fleet.

The company conducts heavy maintenance on its Bombardier Q400, Q300 and Q200 at its heavy maintenance facility in Tamworth.

In other news, QANTAS Airways (Sydney) today celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first jet service between New Zealand and Australia.

On April 10, 1965, a 104 seat QANTAS Boeing 707 (V-jet) aircraft departed Sydney for Christchurch, where it was welcomed by a 10,000 strong crowd. The new Boeing 707s offered a comfortable 20-seat First cabin and 84 seats in Economy.

Previously the Tasman route was serviced by a propeller-driven Lockheed Electra aircraft, and prior to that, Shorts Empire Flying Boats which seated a maximum of 15 passengers and took around nine hours to travel from Auckland to Sydney. The journey now takes around 3 hours.

The inaugural V-jet service was commanded by Chief Pilot Line Operations, Captain “Torchy” Uren and NZ-born cabin crew members Bob Bishop, Alan Williams and Alan Gill as well as Anne Claydon from Lyttelton in Christchurch. QANTAS Founder Sir Hudson Fysh and Lady Fysh were onboard the inaugural service.

QANTAS was established in New Zealand in 1940, when Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), formed by QANTAS, Imperial Airways (BOAC), and a partnership of Union Airways of New Zealand and the New Zealand Government, inaugurated a weekly service between Sydney and Auckland.

In October 1961, QANTAS began operations in its own right across the Tasman jointly with TEAL, serviced by an Electra international aircraft.

QANTAS today operates more than 200 flights per week between New Zealand and Australia, including services between Auckland and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane; Wellington and Melbourne; and Christchurch and Sydney. Year-round weekly services between Queenstown and Sydney commenced in October 2005 and now operate three times per week, increasing to daily from Sydney and twice a week from Brisbane during the ski season. Jetstar also operates across the Tasman, and within New Zealand between Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Virgin Australia to operate a new route from Sydney to Tamworth

Virgin Australia Airlines (Brisbane) has announced it will introduce flights between Tamworth, New South Wales and Sydney from May 2015.

The airline will introduce this new service on May 25, 2015, using its ATR 72 turboprop 68-seat aircraft to operate six return services between Tamworth and Sydney each week.

Virgin Australia will operate a return flight every day (excluding Saturday) departing Sydney at 1.55 pm (1355) arriving into Tamworth at 3.00 pm (1500). The flight will depart Tamworth at 3.30 pm (1530) arriving into Sydney at 4.35 pm (1635).

Virgin Australia to close out the Virgin Blue era

Virgin Australia Airlines (formerly Virgin Blue Airlines) (Brisbane) is getting ready to close out the Virgin Blue brand. The last aircraft to be repainted, the pictured Boeing 737-8FE VH-VUL (msn 36603), will enter the paint shop shortly to be repainted. Virgin Blue became the current Virgin Australia on May 3, 2011.

Why did Virgin Blue Airlines painted their aircraft mainly red? The Virgin Blue name was selected as a result of a naming contest. The selected name was an unique and clever play on the predominantly red livery and the Australian slang expression of calling a red-headed male “Blue” or “Bluey”. Today Virgin Australia continues to use the red color.

Skytrans of Australia shuts down today

Skytrans Airline (Cairns) officially ceased operations today (January 2) after 25 years of service. The airline operated scheduled passenger flights from Cairns and Brisbane to 25 destinations in Queensland with Bombardier (de Havilland Canada) DHC-8-100s and DHC-8-300s.

Skytrans Pty Ltd, the Cairns based, family owned and commercially operated airline which celebrated its 25th year of serving the people and communities of North Queensland, carried its last passenger this afternoon, Friday January 2, 2015.

Skytrans Pty Ltd has made the decision to cease trading, effective immediately. As the Managing Director, I will seek legal and financial advice over the next few days regarding options for the business moving forward, but to be clear, it does not include the recommencement of flights in the short to medium term.

As Managing Director I have a lawful responsibility to notify regulators and other significant stakeholders when there are key impacts on the business. This has been one of those times.

This is not only a sad day for the business, but more importantly for our staff and indeed the passengers and communities of North Queensland.

All staff have been made redundant. Everyone has already been paid their entitlements. Over $4 million dollars paid out in staff entitlements – $2M to 121 staff made redundant late November and early December, due to the loss of a large contract, and the remaining 67 staff were paid $2M in entitlements today.

We are all well aware that the aviation market has been tough and we knew that it would get tougher with Skytrans in 2015. We have been closely monitoring the performance of the business and worked to develop a 2015 business model and associated strategies.

Since the loss of a large government contract we had been working on a business model that included focused services on the Cape routes utilising three aircraft. This included a reduction of operating costs and a workforce restructure. This 2015 business model indicated a small profit and whilst a reduced version of our current business, it was projected to be a viable albeit smaller business.

Our initial model for 2015 was based on an exchange rate with the US$0.91. As many of you will know the majority of our costs are actually in US$, so fluctuations in exchange rates have a material impact on our business. Within the last few weeks we have seen the Australian dollar fall as low as US$0.81. Unfortunately a drop below US$0.88 means our revised Skytrans model would not be a viable long term proposition. In the past few weeks we have been monitoring the exchange rate to see if the dip was only temporary, but unfortunately this appears to be a longer term adjustment with even predictions the AU$ could fall as low as US$0.75.

In addition to the currency challenge it now appears likely that we will have competition on our Cape routes with an inevitable price war – a war where the only winner would be the airline with the deepest pockets. It would be a war I would not be prepared to enter as it would have jeopardised staff entitlements.

QANTAS Link to start nonstop flights from Brisbane to Hamilton Island

QANTAS Link (Sunstate Airlines) (Brisbane) has announced it will start nonstop flights between Brisbane and Hamilton Island with four weekly roundtrips with 74-seat Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) aircraft. The new route will launch on November 28 at the start of the summer season.

The QANTAS Group offers 40 roundtrip services a week to Hamilton Island from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns.
