Singapore Airlines unveils its new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner cabin

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has unveiled the next generation of regional cabin products, fitted on its new Boeing 787-10 fleet, which will redefine travel on flights up to eight hours.

The new cabin products feature fully-flat beds and direct aisle access for all Business Class customers, ergonomically-designed contour backrests with six-way adjustable headrests in Economy Class, and personalised in-flight entertainment (IFE) experience for all customers through myKrisWorld.

They were unveiled for the first time today at a launch event in Singapore. The launch followed the arrival of the worldโ€™s first 787-10 from Boeingโ€™s production facility in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The new 787-10s are configured with 337 seats in two classes, featuring 36 Business Class seats and 301 Economy Class seats.

New Business Class

Manufactured by Stelia Aerospace, the new regional Business Class seats on the 787-10s are arranged in a forward-facing 1-2-1 staggered configuration to provide every customer direct aisle access.

With each seat able to recline directly into a 76โ€ fully-flat bed, Business Class customers can rest in more comfort, even on the shortest flights. Customers will have more options to relax in their seat while being entertained by KrisWorld, SIAโ€™s award-winning in-flight entertainment system, on their personal 18โ€ full high-definition touchscreen monitor, powered by Panasonicโ€™s latest eX3 system.

Each seat measures up to 26โ€ in width with retractable armrests that can be raised and lowered. Whether travelling alone or with a partner, adjustable dividers at the centre seats provide for a customised level of privacy to suit individual preferences.

Customers can also look forward to other features to enhance their travelling experience, such as ample stowage space for personal items, a business panel with in-seat power supply and USB ports, and integrated reading light unit with adjustable lighting intensity.

New Economy Class

Designed and built by RECARO, the new Economy Class seat also offers an enhanced in-flight experience. Arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration, each of the 301 Economy Class seats on the new 787-10s has an ergonomically-designed contour backrest that provides greater comfort, with a six-way adjustable headrest with foldable wings to provide more neck support.

Economy Class customers can also enjoy an enhanced entertainment experience on their personal 11.6โ€ full high-definition touchscreen monitor, as they browse from the selection of more than 1,000 movies, TV shows, audio programmes and games on KrisWorld.

Other features that Economy Class customers can look forward to include personal storage space for small personal items, a coat hook, USB port and in-seat power supply.

New In-Flight Entertainment Experience

All customers on the new 787-10s will also have greater control over their in-flight entertainment (IFE) experience through myKrisWorld, allowing for world-first IFE personalisation. Features of myKrisWorld include content recommendations based on customer preferences and viewing history, and KrisFlyer members being able to bookmark and resume content, as well as customise and save preferences for subsequent flights.

SIA is also the first airline in the world to offer a series of games from Toca Boca and Sago Mini on KrisWorld. Initially available on the 787-10s, this popular entertainment option will progressively be made available on other aircraft types in the Airlineโ€™s fleet.

The new 787-10s will also be equipped with in-flight WiFi supported by Panasonicโ€™s Global Communication Services and GSM phone services provided by Panasonicโ€™s wholly owned subsidiary Aeromobile.

โ€œThe introduction of the new cabin products on our Boeing 787-10 fleet reinforces our unwavering commitment to product leadership, one of the key pillars of our brand promise,โ€ said SIA CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong.

โ€œThe new products were the result of a series of consultations with customers, and from working closely with our seat designers and manufacturers. We are confident that the new regional cabin products, with full-flat beds in Business Class and the many new features in Economy Class, will offer our customers a more comfortable in-flight experience even on the shortest flights.โ€

SIA is investing US$350 million in the introduction of the new regional cabin products on an initial 20 787-10s.

SIA is the first and largest customer for the 787-10, with firm orders for 49 of the type. The Airline also has a firm order with Boeing for 20 777-9s, which are due for delivery from the 2021/22 financial year.

Boeing delivers the first 787-10 Dreamliner to Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines and Boeing on March 25 celebrated the delivery of the first 787-10 airplane, the newest and largest member of the Dreamliner family and a jet that will set a new global standard for fuel efficiency.

About 3,000ย people marked the milestone at Boeing’s facility in North Charleston, South Carolina where the latest 787 model is manufactured (above).

Like the other 787 Dreamliners, the 787-10 is designed with strong, lightweight composites, the most advanced systems, and comfortable cabin features. The 787-10, though, features a longer fuselage which allows it to carry about 40 more passengers or a total of 330 seats in a standard two-class configuration.

With the additional capacity, the 787-10 provides airlines the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody airplane in service today.

Singapore Airlines โ€“ through its subsidiary Scoot โ€“ already flies the 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners. With this delivery the group will be the first to operate all three Dreamliner models. Singapore Airlines has 68 additional Boeing widebody jets on order, including 48 additional 787-10s, and 20 of the new 777-9s.

The 787-10’s superior performance and high commonality with its Dreamliner siblings have attracted strong interest from around the world, including in Asia where the jet can connect all points within the region. The 787-10 also offers Asian operators the flexibility to fly to Europe, Africa and Oceania.

Singapore Airlines plans to puts its 787-10s into scheduled service in May, with flights from Singapore to Osaka, Japan and Perth, Australia. Prior to the introduction of these services, the aircraft will be operated on selected flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur for crew training purposes.

Airline safety can be fun โ€“ according to these 6 videos

Letโ€™s face it: Airline safety videos are a tricky matter. Itโ€™s a challenge for carriers to present content thatโ€™s beenย heard a million times beforeย in a way that makes it seem like itโ€™s theย latest thing. Furthermore, thisย prerecordedย material should be creative enough to make passengers โ€“ from all backgroundsย and attention spansย โ€“ watch it from start to finish.

Fortunately, over the years, airlines have produced inventive safety videos, proving that with the right amount of imagination, itโ€™s possible to make something as routine asย reminding people to fasten theirย seatbeltsย fun and rather memorable. So, are these six short clips entertaining orย justย distracting? You be the judge.

1.ย Singapore Airlinesย

The Singapore Girl isย a prominent element of the Singaporean national carrierโ€™s marketing. Here,ย dressed in her signatureย sarongย kebayaย โ€“ made of traditional Asian batik and designed by Parisian couturier Pierre Balmain in 1968ย โ€“ she takes passengers on a tour of the island city-state. Along theย way, important instructions to ensure oneโ€™sย safety on board areย shown.

2. British Airwaysย

Thisย six-minute shortย features some of theย theย UKโ€™s best-known actors,ย comediansย and celebrities,ย such asย Rowan Atkinson, Ianย McKellen, Gordon Ramsay andย Thandieย Newton.ย Done in collaboration with the UK charity Comic Relief, these personalitiesย are seenย auditioning in sketches in front of comedianย Asimย Chaudhry โ€“ย asย his alter egoย Chabuddyย G โ€“for aย roleย in British Airwaysโ€™ new safety video.

3. Philippine Airlinesย

According to the Philippine flag carrier, inflight safety is their top priority. In thisย nationwide crowd-sourced video, various individuals share safety procedures while enjoying some ofย the Southeast Asian archipelagoโ€™s attractions.ย Itโ€™s a safety video and tourism presentation cleverly rolled into one.

4. TAP Portugalย

The Portuguese national airline recruited actualย passengers to perform safety instructions in a set located in a hangar atย its primary hub,ย Lisbon Airport.ย One thousandย travellersย from different nationalitiesย tried out for a spot in the video, and only 25 were picked to take part in theย productionย whichย took eight days toย complete. All that effortย paid off, sinceย the video won theโ€ฏAPEX Passenger Choice Awardโ€ฏfor Best In-Flight Video in 2013.

5.ย Air Franceย

Living up to its reputationย as the country that invented chic,ย this video from the French flag carrierย features the actress Dorcasย Coppinsย in aโ€ฏflight attendantโ€™s uniform, deliveringย the safety message inย bothย French and English.ย Simultaneously,ย fiveย womenย in Breton tops and flowy skirtsย act out the instructions or hold props asย a song by American electronic duo Glass Candyย plays in the background.

6. Air New Zealandย

Toย celebrate the third and final filmย inย The Hobbit Trilogy โ€“ The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armiesย โ€“ in 2014,ย the official airline of Middle-earthย unveiled what it dubbedย โ€œThe Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made.โ€ย Directed by Taikaย Waititi, the four-minute-long clip starsย Elijah Wood, Sylvester McCoy, Dean Oโ€™Gorman, John Rhys-Davies (as Gimli) and New Zealandโ€™s own Sir Peter Jackson.
