Ukraine International Airlines reports on its results for 2021, continues to operate normally

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) summed up the results of 2021. Thus, last year the company successfully implemented measures to optimize and improve the company’s performance, minimize the impact of the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and, in particular – strengthen its reputation in the domestic and international passenger markets. At the same time, the trend towards further implementation of digital solutions in the service environment was continued.

According to the results of 2021, UIA’s operating indicators were recorded at the level of:

  • 20,657 flights performed, which is 45% more than in 2020 and 65% less than in 2019;
    • Of which 11,673 scheduled flights compared to 10,596 in 2020 and 52,808 in 2019;
    • Of which 8,984 charter flights compared to 3,625 in 2020 and 5,537 in 2019;
  • 2790037 passengers carried, which is 61% more than in 2020, but 65% less than in the forecast year 2019;
    • 1,582,519 charter passengers in 2021 compared to 595,341 passengers in 2020 and 1,030,213 in 2019;
    • 1,207,518 scheduled flights in 2021 compared to 1,133,335 passengers in 2020 and 6,936,638 in 2019.
  • 4416 tons of cargo and mail compared to 7456 tons in 2020 and 21 650 tons in 2019.

In addition, in 12 months of 2021, the airline returned about 33 million USD to passengers. In total, for the entire period of work in crisis conditions during the pandemic from April 2020 to December 31, 2021, the company provided a return of about 57 million USD.

The transformation and optimization of UIA’s operations in 2020-2021ย led to a clear reversal of the trend, even in times of crisis, made possible by adapting the company’s business model from network to hybrid and significantly reducing costs.

The savings allowed UIA to demonstrate one of the lowest flight cost levels among international network carriers in terms of CASK (Cost Available Seat Kilometer).

CASK is the cost per seat kilometer (ASK-available seat kilometer) generated by the company as part of its operating activities. This figure is calculated by mathematically dividing the cost per seat-kilometer. Accordingly, there is a clear pattern of growth of CASK with decreasing chair-kilometers.

โ€œFor UIA, as a network carrier, one of the important roles in the formation of CASK is played by long-haul flights operation. Boeing 777 provide transportation of the maximum number of seats over very long distances, which has a positive effect on reducing the cost of flight across the network. Unfortunately, in 2020 – 2021 long-haul boards were withdrawn from the fleet, which affected the increase in CASK compared to 2019. However, according to the approved budget for 2022, with the return of three Boeing-777s, the CASK is expected to decrease compared to 2021. At the same time, CASK 2022 is only 15% higher than the pre-crisis figure in 2019, despite a significant reduction in chair-kilometers compared to 2019. This is the result of the reforms carried out at UIA during the COVID-19 crisis,โ€ said UIA CEO Yevhenii Dykhne.

The President of the United States has warned all Americans to leave Ukraine immediately.

Ukraine International Airlines announces its summer schedule

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) announces the reloading of a number of routes and the launch of fundamentally new destinations as part of the 2022 summer season. The expansion of the UIA network with a hub at Boryspil International Airport, in particular, provides for the long-awaited resumption of the program of long-haul flights to New York and Toronto with a qualitative increase in frequencies to Delhi on Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.

The launch of long-hall flights and the further development of the route network is nothing more than a result of UIA’s prudent management policy to optimize activities during a pandemic and bring the company to pre-crisis levels. The airline is already starting to sell tickets on the routes of the updated summer schedule.

Therefore, starting in June, UIA is set to expand the original network of routes:

KYIV (KBP) – NICE (NCE) – KYIV (KBP) KYIV (KBP) – STOCKHOLM (ARN) – KYIV (KBP)
KYIV (KBP) – NEW YORK (JFK) – KYIV (KBP) KYIV (KBP) – ZURICH (ZRH) – KYIV (KBP)
KYIV (KBP) – BRUSSELS (BRU) – KYIV (KBP) ODESA (ODS) – VILNIUS (VNO) – ODESA (ODS)
KYIV (KBP) – TORONTO (YYZ) – KYIV (KBP) LVIV (LWO) – TEL AVIV (TLV) – LVIV (LWO)

KYIV KBP) – COPENHAGEN (CPH) – KYIV (KBP) KYIV (KBP) – VIENNA (VIE) – KYIV (KBP)
KYIV (KBP) – DUSSELDORF (DUS) – KYIV (KBP)

In addition to restoring the original network of routes, from June 2022 UIA intends to start flights on completely new routes from Kyiv (KBP) to Alicante (ALC) and Oslo (OSL).

Starting from 01.06.2022, the airline is actively preparing for the restart of regular flights to Toronto, and from 02.06.2022 – to New York, according to the following schedule:

  • Kyiv (KBP) – Toronto (YYZ) – Kyiv (KBP) โ€“ on Wednesdays and Saturdays;
  • Kyiv (KBP) – New York (JFK) – Kyiv (KBP) โ€“ on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays;

In addition, the airline provides access to more than 30 cities in the United States and Canada through the airports of New York and Toronto with partners, including from / to Montreal (YMQ), Ottawa (YOW), Winnipeg (YWG), Vancouver (YVR), Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and other cities.

Flights to New York and Toronto will be operated on Boeing 777-200ER long-haul aircraft in a three-class cabin layout with cabins: business, economy premium and economy.

UIA will also increase the number of scheduled flights between Kyiv and Delhi from June this year. Starting from June 1, 2022, flights will be operated five times a week on Boeing 777-200ER long-haul aircraft:

  • Kyiv (KBP) – Delhi (DEL) – daily, except Mondays and Saturdays;
  • Delhi – Kyiv (KBP) – daily, except Tuesdays and Sundays.

Ukraine International to fly to Oslo, Norway

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) intends to launch new scheduled flights to the capital and largest city in Norway – Oslo. Thus, UIA will be the first and currently the only airline in Ukraine to start flights on this route. Flights between Kyiv and Oslo will be operated on a medium-haul Embraer 190 aircraft in a three-classes of service: business, economy premium-economy.

Air services on this northern route are scheduled for June 1, 2022. Flights will be operated three times a week โ€“ on Wednesdays, on Fridays and on Sundays. Departure from Boryspil Airport (KBP) is scheduled for 08:25 with arrival in Oslo (OSL) at 10:15. Return flight at 16:00, arrival in Boryspil at 17:50.

Thanks to the convenient schedule, passengers from Norway will be able to use the docking at Boryspil International Airport, and then continue their journey on international flights to Istanbul (IST), Tel Aviv (TLV), Tbilisi (TBS), Cairo (CAI), Chisinau (KIV) ), Baku (GYD), Yerevan (EVN), Tenerife (TFS), Rome (FCO), Athens (ATH), Larnaca (LCA), Split (SPU), and Budapest (BUD).

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) has announced a review of its plans to resume flights to Poland from June 18, 2021. The reason for this decision was the situation that arose due to the need to fly over the territory of Belarus and the subsequent redistribution of passenger traffic observed by the UIA in this direction.

UIA will carefully analyze the market for both point-to-point passengers traveling from / to Poland and transfer passengers traveling with a change in Poland or Ukraine. If the demand for the UIA network is restored, the flights will be resumed.

Ukraine International to resume New York flights

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) has updated its plans and schedule for non-stop wide-body flights between Kyiv & New York. UIA is planning to resume flights as the Spring season takes hold in both cities. Plans include flights in time for the Easter holidays in 2021.

Numerous factors have to be considered when planning these flights, and the determination is a fluid matter, understanding the worldwide corona pandemic, governmental decisions regarding the opening of borders and the general economic situation around the world.

Understanding that many factors are beyond the control of UIA, and that the planning of long-haul flights is determined months of advance, UIA will make the determination on the number of nonstop flights and the final schedule later this year.

UIA will closely monitor the economic recovery in the US and Ukraine as well as the global responses to the CoVid pandemic by the governments of these countries and Israel, and other European countries. Additional factors that will be given consideration include the political situation in the Caucasus, which has recently led to the cancellation of UIA flights to Yerevan, Baku and Tbilisi, connecting flights important to the success of New York โ€“ Kyiv route. The combination of these many factors, will impact how UIA will move forward for these flights.

Ukraine International Airlines has made this announcement:

Effective October 1, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) is adding more international routes and better connections throughout its route network. One of the immediate benefits is the convenient connections from key international cities to Ukraine and to Europe and the Middle East. These new schedule additions have been made with the full realization of the current Pandemic impacting travel throughout the world and Ukraineโ€™s recent restrictions on welcoming foreign travelers. Travelers will see more flight choices in October, with the limited schedule being operated remaining virtually unchanged until October,24. The new schedule reflects the government of Ukraine lifting restrictions for foreign visitor arrivals at the end of September. UIA passengers will now have the opportunity to have easy seamless one-stop connections from throughout Europe and The Middle East to important destinations throughout the UIA route network.

  • Kyiv – Dusseldorf (DUS) – Kyiv
  • Kyiv – London (LGW) – Kyiv
