United launches Ukraine relief effort to support flying workers and supplies to areas in need

United Airlines today announced a fundraising effort that has the potential to play a critical role in the mission to fly aid workers and supplies to the areas of Ukrainethat are most in need.

Starting today, United’s MileagePlusยฎ members can donate cash or miles to the airline’s signature relief partners – Airlink, Americares, American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen – by visiting united.com/UkraineSupport. United will match the first five million donated miles – the equivalent of hundreds of connecting flights to places like Poland, Hungary and Romania – and $100,000 as well as award bonus miles to anyone who gives $50 or more.

“The human tragedy we are witnessing in Ukraine is horrifying and has shocked us all so we’re doing our part to quickly help get aid to the people who desperately need relief,” said United President Brett Hart. “Our partners have been on the ground for more than a week and it’s clear they need more resources to fulfill their mission of flying workers and supplies to and from the frontlines of this crisis. We’re proud to do our part and will continue to look for ways to lend support where it’s needed.”

United’s relief partners are already on the ground in the countries supporting Ukraine and are assisting in a number of different ways including:

  • Airlink: Using the power of aviation to deliver critical aid – medical, WASH, shelter, and emergency response and medical teams for 20+ humanitarian organizations to help refugees.
  • Americares: Mobilizing large-scale shipments of medicine and relief supplies and prepared to deploy an emergency medical team to provide essential health services for refugees fleeing Ukraine.
  • World Central Kitchen: Working with local restaurants, caterers, and food trucks in the region to provide hot, nourishing meals at border crossings, shelters, and other refugee communities across Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania and Slovakia.
  • American Red Cross: Supporting the global Red Cross network providing humanitarian relief to those affected by the Ukraine crisis.

In addition to fundraising efforts, United has paused Russian airspace transit, suspended interline agreements with Russian carriers and until further notice, credit card payments from Russia will no longer be accepted on the United app or united.com. United Aims to quadruple the size of its fleet of training aircraft

United Aviate Academy today announced that it aims to potentially quadruple the size of its fleet of training aircraft, in response to the surge of applications to the country’s only flight school owned by a major airline. The Academy will add 25 new, state-of-the artย Cirrus TRAC SR20ย training aircraft to its current fleet of 25, with the option to purchase up to 50 more.

United Aviate Academy has already received more than 12,000 applications since announcing the school inย April 2021. The schoolย officially openedย in January and welcomed a historic inaugural class of future pilots, part of the airline’s effort ย to train at least 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030, with the goal of at least half women or people of color.

United Aviate Academy also recently purchased seven state-of-the-artย FRASCA simulators, including some with 220-degree wraparound displays, with the first of these brand-new flight simulators arriving in April. These high-quality flight simulators feature hardware and software that operates exactly like the aircraft, for maximum effectiveness for students.

United Aviate Academy, whose corporate name is Westwind School of Aeronautics Phoenix, LLC, already has a fleet of 25 late-model Cirrus TRAC SR20 series single-engine aircraft, which feature advanced safety characteristics. This new order will add at least 25 brand-new TRAC SR20 aircraft beginning in May with options and purchase rights for up to 50 more. The SR20 features impressive capabilities that complement its stable flight characteristics. Its integrated Garminยฎ Perspective+ flight deck includes features found on advanced airliners such as two large flight displays, a Flight Management System keypad controller, an Electronic Stability and Protection system as well as integrated engine indication and crew alerting/warning systems.

Its durable all-composite airframe with the signature Cirrus Airframe Parachute Systemยฎ makes the TRAC Series one of the safest and most versatile training airplanes available today. United Aviate Academy is also the launch partner for a significant expansion of CirrusIQโ„ข, which allows for monitoring of flight data, enabling United Aviate Academy students and instructors to do enhanced debriefings after each lesson.

United Aviate Academy is breaking down barriers to introduce new pilots to rewarding careers. Last summer, United unveiledย United Next, which will revolutionize the United flying experience and add more than 500 new aircraft. United plans to hire at least 10,000 new pilots by 2030 to meet this need. United will find those pilots through targeted recruiting, strategic partnerships and scholarship and financial aid solutions.

United Aviate Academy’s year-long training program sets up students for a career that reflects United’s high standard of professionalism and deep commitment to delivering a safe, caring, dependable and efficient travel experience. After completing their training at the academy, students can build flight and leadership experience while working within theย Aviateย pilot development ecosystem at partner universities, professional flight training organizations and United Expressยฎ carriers on their way to becoming United pilots. United currently has about 12,000 pilots, and Captains of United’s Boeing 787s and 777s can earn more thanย $350,000ย per year. In addition, United pilots receive one of the highest 401(k) matches in the nation โ€“ 16% of base pay.

United plans to expand service to Cape Town with year-round, nonstop flights from Newark

N29981

United Airlines made this announcement:

United today announced it plans to expand service to one of the worldโ€™s most popular vacation destinations by offering three nonstop flights per week, year-round, between Newark and Cape Town International Airport, subject to government approval.

United will fly a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft that includes 48 lie-flat, United Polarisยฎ business class seats, 21 United Premium Plusยฎ seats and 39 seats in Economy Plusยฎ. All seats are equipped with seatback on-demand entertainment to help customers pass the time and relax during their travels.

United is the only airline to offer nonstop flights between the U.S. and Cape Town and offers more flights to South Africa than any other North American carrier.

United first launched flights to Cape Town in December 2019, and it quickly became one of the airlineโ€™s marquee international routes. The airline later built upon this success in Africa with the launch of flights between New York/Newark and Johannesburg in June 2021, new service between Washington D.C. and Accra, Ghana in May 2021 and between Washington D.C. and Lagos, Nigeria in November 2021.

This expanded service also strengthens Unitedโ€™s leading network from Newark. United offers service to 74 international destinations from New York/Newark, more than any U.S. carrier. In 2022, the airline will introduce new service to additional international destinations including Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Azores, Portugal; Bergen, Norway; Tenerife, Spain and Nice, France.

United officially opens its Flight Academy

United Aviate Academyโ€™s first class of students is 80% women or people of color, outpacing the airlineโ€™s goal to train about 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030 with at least half being women or people of color

Unprecedented training commitment will dramatically expand access to lucrative and rewarding careers while upholding Unitedโ€™s world-class safety and training standards

United CEO Scott Kirby, United President Brett Hart, and other officials on hand at Phoenix Goodyear Airport to officially open new school and welcome students

United, the only major U.S. airline to own a flight training school, officially opened United Aviate Academyย today and welcomed a historic inaugural class of future pilots, 80% of whom are women or people of color. United Aviate Academy is a key part of the airlineโ€™s goal to train about 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030, with at least half women or people of color. This unprecedented training commitment will dramatically expand access to this lucrative and rewarding career while upholding Unitedโ€™s world-class safety standards.

Last summer, United unveiled its ambitiousย United Nextย strategy to revolutionize the United flying experience and introduce more than 500 new, narrow-body aircraft into its fleet to match the anticipated resurgence in air travel. United plans to hire at least 10,000 new pilots by 2030 to meet this need with about 5,000 of those coming from United Aviate Academy.

United Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby and United President Brett Hart were joined today by Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Brad Mims and other government officials at the Phoenix Goodyear Airport to welcome the new students. The group also outlined Unitedโ€™s plan to help break down some of the barriers to entry through targeted recruiting, strategic partnerships and scholarship and financial aid solutions.

โ€œOur pilots are the best in the industry and have set a high standard of excellence,โ€ said Kirby. โ€œRecruiting and training even more people who have that same level of talent, motivation and skill is the right thing to do and will make us an even better airline. I couldnโ€™t be prouder of this first group of students and look forward to meeting the thousands of talented individuals who will pass through these doors in the years to come.โ€

Unfortunately, for many people becoming a pilot seems not only out of reach financially, but completely unimaginable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 5.6% of pilots are women and 6% are people of color. Earning a commercial pilot’s license in the U.S. can cost about $100,000 and becoming an Airline Transport Pilot requires 1,500 hours of flight time, which requires a significant commitment.

United and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have renewed last yearโ€™s commitment to fund nearly $2.4 million in scholarships for future aviators attending United Aviate Academy. The airline also directly works with the following organizations to educate prospects about the benefits of becoming a pilot and to find candidates for scholarship opportunities:

  • Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals
  • Sisters of the Skies
  • The Latino Pilots Association
  • The Professional Asian Pilots Association

United currently has about 12,000 pilots, and Captains of Unitedโ€™s Boeing 787s and 777s can earn more than $350,000 per year. In addition, United pilots receive one of the highest 401(k) matches in the nation โ€“ 16% of base pay.

United Aviate Academy expects to train at least 500 students annually as one part of United recruiting as the carrier works toward hiring at least 10,000 pilots by 2030. Aviation consulting firm Oliver Wymanย estimatesย a worldwide pilot shortage of 34,000 aviators by 2025.

United Aviate Academyโ€™s first class is undergoing a year-long training program that sets them up for a career that reflects Unitedโ€™s high standard of professionalism and deep commitment to delivering a safe, caring, dependable and efficient travel experience. After completing their training at the academy, students can build flight and leadership experience while working within theย Aviateย pilot development ecosystem at partner universities, professional flight training organizations and United Express carriers on their way to becoming United pilots.

โ€œAs a United pilot for more than 32 years, it’s exciting to see these new students earning their wings and beginning their aviation careers, and Iโ€™m looking forward to them joining me on the flight deck one day,โ€ said United Chief Pilot Mary Ann Schaffer. โ€œWe need more pilots and a more diverse pool of young aviators, and United Aviate Academy will help us achieve both goals.โ€

United worked closely with multiple organizations, cities, and elected officials to help make the academy a reality for aspiring pilots who otherwise may not have pursued a career in aviation. The airline extends its gratitude to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and his office; the Arizona Commerce Authority; the City of Phoenix and Mayor Kate Gallego; and the City of Goodyear and Mayor Joe Pizzillo and the late Mayor Georgia Lord.

United Aviate Academy

The 340,000 square-foot United Aviate Academy facility at Phoenix Goodyear Airport includes world-class features such as:

  • Leasing a fleet of late-model Cirrus SR-20 series single-engine aircraft, which feature advanced safety characteristics
  • Nearly 50,000 square feet of office space
  • Multiple aircraft hangars
  • Dormitory rooms for student housing with ample room for expansion
  • Proximity to many auxiliary airfields in the Phoenix area
  • Favorable weather for year-round flight training

United releases its fourth quarter and full-year 2021 financial results

United Airlines issued this financial report for the fourth quarter 2021 and full year 2021:

United Airlines (UAL) today announced fourth quarter and full year 2021 financial results and reiterated confidence in its longer term United Next financial targets. The company achieved every major financial guidance target for the fourth quarter โ€“ and set a new Net Promoter Score (NPS) record in 2021 โ€“ despite the sharp spike in COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant. Despite near term volatility, bookings for spring travel and beyond remain strong, which is why the Omicron spike has not altered the airline’s confidence in the 2023 and 2026 CASM-ex1ย United Next targets announced last year.

The airline starts 2022 with a scaled-back schedule, reflecting the impact of the Omicron spike on demand. However, as the year progresses, United expects to nimbly ramp up capacity by ungrounding 52 Pratt & Whitney-powered Boeing 777-200s, as demand returns, which will yield improvements in the airline’s gauge and aircraft utilization. The airline expects this approach, which continues to prioritize matching capacity to demand, means: 1) the airline will fly fewer available seat miles (ASMs) in 2022 than 2019 and 2) CASM-ex1ย will decline significantly over the course of 2022. Most importantly, these 2022 trends will lay the groundwork for successful execution of the multi-year United Next strategy and achievement of the financial targets set for 2023 and beyond.

“The United team has been fighting through unprecedented obstacles to, once again, overcome the new and daunting challenges that COVID-19 is bringing to aviation, and I am grateful to each one of them for their commitment to taking care of our customers,” said United Airlines CEOย Scott Kirby. “While Omicron is impacting near term demand, we remain optimistic about the spring and excited about the summer and beyond. We look forward to beginning to return the Pratt & Whitney 777s to service this quarter and getting the full airline back to normal utilization โ€” as we ramp up along with demand this year. By investing in innovative technology, focusing on process improvements and implementing a transformative United Next strategy, we’re poised to emerge as an aviation leader that’s more efficient than before and serves our customers better than ever.”

United Airlines is temporarily curbing its flights due to surging Omicron

A letter to United employees

by CEO Scott Kirby.

Happy New Year – I want to start this message with a thank you.

Our frontline teams continue to put in a tremendous effort during what I know is an incredibly challenging and stressful time – the Omicron surge has put a strain on our operation, resulting in customer disruptions during a busy holiday season. I appreciate your professionalism, creativity, and caring approach โ€“ itโ€™s really made all the difference in helping us manage the impact on our customers.

In addition to impacting our operation and our customers, I also know that Omicron has affected the personal well-being of our United team. We have about 3,000 employees who are currently positive for COVID. Just as an example, in one day alone at Newark, nearly one-third of our workforce called out sick. To those who are out sick or isolating, we wish you a speedy recovery.

But as difficult as this period has been for you and our customers, there are two pieces of good news:

  1. While we go to great lengths to avoid cancelling flights, we worked to get ahead of the impact by acting early to cancel flights when necessary and notifying impacted customers in advance of them coming to the airport โ€“ we’re also reducing our near-term schedules to make sure we have the staffing and resources to take care of customers. As a result, weโ€™ve been able to get a high percentage of our customers on other flights and close to their original arrival time. And considering the impact of Omicron and winter weather, our NPS scores and contact center hold times continue to hold up well. While we hate to ever have any operational disruptions, these results are a credit to all of you and your teams so thank you again.
  2. The second and most important piece of good news is that our vaccine requirement is working โ€“ and saving lives. While we have about 3,000 employees who are currently positive for COVID,ย zeroย of our vaccinated employees are currently hospitalized. Since our vaccine policy went into effect, the hospitalization rate among our employees has been 100x lower than the general population in the U.S. Prior to our vaccine requirement, tragically, more than one United employee on average *per week* was dying from COVID. But weโ€™ve now gone eight straight weeks withย zeroย COVID-related deaths among our vaccinated employees โ€“ based on Unitedโ€™s prior experience and the nationwide data related to COVID fatalities among the unvaccinated, that means there are approximately 8-10 United employees who are alive today because of our vaccine requirement.

In dealing with COVID,ย zeroย is the word that matters – zero deaths and zero hospitalizations for vaccinated employees. And while I know that some people still disagree with our policy, United is proving that requiring the vaccine is the right thing to do because it saves lives.

Thank you for all you have done as we navigated the unprecedented and unpredictable challenges that COVID has thrown our way. Stay safe and please continue to take care of each other and our customers.

From CNN:

“United Airlines said it is reducing its flight schedule in hopes of stemming Covid-related staffing shortages that have caused thousands of flight cancellations across the industry.

In a new company-wide memo, CEO Scott Kirby said the airline is “reducing our near-term schedules to make sure we have the staffing and resources to take care of customers.”

The two 787-9s are powered by General Electric GEnx engines and configured in a 257-seat layout with the new Polaris and Premium Plus cabins. As air travel returns, these widebody aircraft are expected to deliver the advantages of lower fuel consumption and efficient economics to open new routes and markets.

The thirteen 737 MAX 8 aircraft, powered by CFM Internationalโ€™s LEAP-1B engines, feature a total of 166 seats in a 2-cabin layout. The MAXs are operated on the carrierโ€™s short- and medium-haul missions, delivering a reduced environmental impact and an enhanced passenger experience as United advances its long-term strategy to further entrench domestic operations.
