Virgin America selects CFM International’s advanced LEAPโ„ข engine to power its 30 new Airbus A320neo aircraft

Virgin America (San Francisco) has announces it has selected CFM International’s advanced LEAPโ„ข engine to power its 30 new Airbus A320neo aircraft scheduled to begin delivery in 2016. In addition, the airline has selected the CFM56-5B engine to power 30 of its current technology A320s on order. The engine orders have a combined value of $1.4 billion at list price. In January, the airline announced it would nearly triple its fleet size with an order for 60 new Airbus A320 Family aircraft โ€“ including the first commercial order for the new eco-efficient Airbus A320neo. Together, the A320neo and the LEAPโ„ข engine promise to deliver one of the world’s most fuel-efficient commercial aircraft, with more than 15 percent improved fuel efficiency, corresponding improvements in carbon efficiency and double digit reductions in NOx emissions.

Virgin America’s current A320 Family fleet is powered by the CFM56 engine and is up to 25 percent more fuel efficient than other domestic fleets and one of the most carbon-efficient in the U.S. on an RPM basis. The LEAPโ„ข engine and the A320neo with the new wing tip “Sharklets” will yield even greater efficiencies. Compared to aircraft powered by today’s best engines, the A320neo with the LEAPโ„ข engine will provide more than 15 percent improved fuel efficiency and equivalent reductions in CO2 emissions, double digit reductions in NOx emissions, reduced engine noise and lower operating costs. Based on Virgin America’s use and operation of the aircraft, it is estimated that the LEAPโ„ข advances will offer Virgin America an annual fuel savings of $1.9 million per aircraft at current fuel prices. With the LEAPโ„ข engine, the A320neo aircraft will also offer increased performance range and emit 3,600 fewer tons of CO2 per aircraft on an annual basis.

Virgin America reports a first quarter operating loss of $29.5 million

Virgin America (San Francisco) yesterday reports its financial results for the first quarter of 2011 (ending on March 31). Virgin America reported a $29.5 million operating loss with its operating margin remaining steady at (14.7) percent. The airline reported strong revenue performance with $201 million in revenues for the first quarter โ€“ a 37 percent jump in revenue versus the first quarter of 2010. Virgin America continued to deliver significant unit revenue performance even as it ramped up in new markets, with a 12 percent improvement in revenue per available seat mile (RASM) year-over-year โ€“ a period in which the domestic industryโ€™s RASM increased by 10 percent. The airlineโ€™s mature capacity RASM growth exceeded this, with performance in the carrierโ€™s established markets improving by 20 percent year-over-year. During the quarter, the carrierโ€™s scheduled capacity increased by 23 percent, compared to the domestic industryโ€™s average capacity increase of one percent for the same period.

The company blamed the loss on the rising cost of fuel:

“Investment in growth and increased fuel prices accounted for the cost increases for the carrier year-over-year. ย The financial pressures of growth reduced first quarter operating results byย $13 million, when accounting for the additional investment in capacity and the revenue ramp up associated with new routes. ย Operating expense per available seat mile excluding fuel (ex-fuel CASM) increased by 5 percent over the year earlier quarter, as a result of cost of idle capacity, primarily new teammates in training and new aircraft being modified to Virgin America standards. ย Although the airlineโ€™s new Airbus A320 Family fleet is up to 25 percent more fuel efficient than other domestic fleets, sharply rising fuel prices remained a challenge during the quarter. ย The skyrocketing cost of fuel accounted for 30 percent of the airlineโ€™s fuel cost increases year-over-year. ย The cost per gallon impact of fuel increased operating expense byย $17 millionย over the increase attributed to the airlineโ€™s growth.ย  Crude oil hedges offsetย $4 millionย of the airlineโ€™s overall fuel cost increase. ย A significant portion of the rise in jet fuel costs is due to the record high crack spreads experienced in February and March.”

Despite the operating loss, Virgin America is growing its fleet from 28 aircraft in service in the first quarter of 2010 to a projected 52 aircraft by the second quarter of 2012.

Virgin America arrives at Chicago O’Hare today

Virgin America (San Francisco) today launches its low-fare, upscale service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), with daily nonstop flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The upstart flashy airline is using every high tech advantage it can find to promote its new level of service.

Today, Virgin America welcomes its dual inaugural flights with a red carpet welcome on the ORD tarmac followed by a party with a Virgin twist at the airline’s new L3 gate. Local officials and Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson will greet the airline’s first guests, including “Flight for Chicago” Facebook fans who scored the chance to “taste test” the new airline versus the competition with a free one-way flight on a legacy carrier and a return on Virgin America.

Virgin America’s new aircraft offer a host of innovative amenities, including custom-designed seating, mood-lit cabins, power outlets and the most advanced entertainment system in the skies. The Redโ„ข entertainment platform offers each guest their own nine inch touch-screen TV with 30 on-demand films, live TV, Google Maps, videogames, seat-to-seat chat, music videos, a 3000 track MP3 catalog and an on-demand menu โ€“ so flyers can order a cocktail or meal from their seat any time during a flight.

Is Virgin America winning the marketing and level of service battle?

Virgin America to stir it up in the Chicago market, taking on American and United

Virgin America (San Francisco) is entering the Chicago market with a flourish on May 25 when it starts its brand of service to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

On April 20 the airline launched a social network assault on the established carriers in the market. The flashy airline issued the following statement:

“Virgin America, the new airline that is anything but ordinary, today (April 20) launches a social media-driven digital marketing campaign that invites flyers in its newest market to take the “Flight for Chicago Challenge.” In February, the award-winning airline launched sales to its newest market of Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), with daily nonstop flights from both Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) starting on May 25, 2011. With legacy airlines representing 98 percent of domestic departures at ORD, Virgin America is injecting some much-needed competition into the ORD-West Coast routes with its unique low-fare flights. The “Flight for Chicago” Facebook Challenge asks Chicagoans to help the new airline “put the smack-down on ordinary air travel” and fight for a good cause at the same time. Those who submit an approved Facebook photo or video by May 11, 2011, showing how they “rise above the ordinary” and are not “featherweight flyers” receive a two-for-one offer on Virgin America’s fresh new Chicago flights. The airline will donate $5 per entry to Stand Up To Cancer. The top five video submissions and top five photo submissions, as determined by voting and judging, will go on to become “contenders” to decide who will be the title holder of the Chicago skies, with the airline inviting them to fly on its competition to California and back to Chicago on one of Virgin America’s inaugural flights.

Known for its mood-lit, beautifully designed cabins, touch-screen entertainment and low-fare service, Virgin America has been shaking up the status quo in domestic flying since its 2007 launch โ€“ and winning over consumers and travel awards along the way. The top ten “Flight for Chicago” contenders will score a one-way flight from ORD to LAX or SFO on any competing domestic airline and a “victory lap home” on one of Virgin America’s May inaugural flights from California to Chicago. Contenders will also receive environmentally-responsible roundtrip ground transportation from Embarque, a three-night stay at the Clift San Francisco or Mondrian Los Angeles Hotel and a video-enabled no-contract Virgin Mobile USA LG Optimus V with a $40 Top-Up card to document their experience. Voting is open to everyone, and those who vote will also receive a 20 percent off discount promo code on Virgin America flights. The “Flight for Chicago” challenge is live from April 20, 2011 โ€“ May 11, 2011 on the airline’s Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/virginamerica.”

On the financial side, the airline on April 21 reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2010 and full year 2010.

According to Virgin America, “Against the backdrop of higher fuel costs and the 2010 winter storms, the airline reported strong revenue performance with a 32 percent jump in revenue versus full year 2009. The airline reported revenues of $191 million for the fourth quarter of 2010 and $724 million for full year 2010 โ€“ a year-over-year revenue increase of 25 percent and 32 percent respectively (on a 17 percent year-over-year increase in capacity for the full year). For full year 2010, Virgin America reported a $12 million operating loss on revenues of $724 million โ€” a 68 percent year-over-year improvement, and notable given that the airline’s fuel costs also increased by $73 million for the same period due to higher fuel costs per gallon. The airline reported a (1.7) percent operating margin for full year 2010. As the airline continued to deliver significant growth, it reported industry-leading unit revenue performance (RASM) with a 16 percent improvement in RASM year-over-year for full year 2010. The growing airline’s stage-length adjusted guest unit revenue was also up 12 percent for the quarter and 20 percent for the full year. In 2010, the company reported its first quarterly net profit in the third quarter. Despite its revenue performance and its first quarterly net profit, the airline’s full year 2010 results were lower than originally forecast primarily due to increased fuel costs, higher costs of growth and the impact of the East Coast storms.”

The airline reported an operating loss ofย $11 millionย in the fourth quarter.

The airline grew its fleet from 28 aircraft to 34 aircraft during 2010. The airline’s yield per passenger mile for full year 2010 was 11 cents, up 16 percent compared to full year 2009. Virgin America continues to hedge in order to help manage fuel price volatility. The airline hedged 50 percent of its 2011 projected fuel requirements, with 77 percent of its first quarter 2011 requirements hedged at an average crude oil call strike price of $82 per barrel.

Virgin America ended 2010 with $30 million in unrestricted cash and $66 million in total liquidity. Does it have the financial staying power to take on the big legacy carriers? It bravely believes it does due to its superior product.

Virgin America orders 60 Airbus A320s, including 30 A320neo aircraft

Virgin America (San Francisco)ย today announced a firm order for 60 new Airbus A320 aircraft to be delivered starting in 2013, including 30 of the A320neo aircraft โ€“ the first commercial order for the new eco-efficient engine option. ย This formalizes and expands an initial commitmentย made at the Farnborough International Airshow inย July 2010. ย Today’s announcement of the new fuel-saving A320neo is a new development in that deal. ย Virgin America is the launch customer for the new eco-efficient Airbus A320neo aircraft, which promises to be one of the most fuel and carbon-efficient commercial aircraft in the world. ย With today’s order and growth from other sources, Virgin America’s fleet will more than triple in size โ€“ from its current 34 aircraft to 111 aircraft by 2019.

The 30 current technology A320s are slated for delivery from 2013-2016. The neo option was launched in late 2010, and the 30 neo aircraft are slated for first delivery in early 2016. ย The A320neo will offer 15 percent gains in fuel efficiency, along with the accompanying improvements in carbon efficiency โ€“ including double digit reductions in NOx emissions. ย The A320neo offers reduced engine noise, lower operating costs and up to 500 nautical miles more range. ย Virgin Group Founder Sirย Richard Bransonย and Virgin America President and CEODavid Cush, today join Airbus CEOย Tom Endersย and Airbus COO Customers John Leahy, to make the announcement alongside one of the new aircraft during the Airbus annual press conference atย Toulouse, France. ย Video of the event is available at: ย www.airbus.com/broadcastroom.

Since its 2007 launch, Virgin America has operated a new Airbus A320 Family fleet. Seating configuration on the new aircraft will remain the same as the carrier’s current 146-149 seat A320s, which offer an international-grade First Class cabin and unique Main Cabin and Main Cabin Select services. ย  As with all of Virgin America’s fleet, the new aircraft will undergo modifications to offer the airline’s signature mood-lit interiors, touch-screen entertainment and upscale design features. ย The upgraded neo aircraft will feature 95 percent airframe commonality with the original A320 Family, offering a seamless fit into the existing Virgin America fleet. ย Virgin America has not yet announced its engine choice on the order.

It is estimated that the A320neo’s fuel efficiency will yield an average annual savings ofย $1.1 millionย per aircraft. ย The neo will employ wing tip devices called “Sharklets,” which enhance the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the A320. ย The A320neo will emit 3,600 fewer tons of CO2 per aircraft on an annual basis.
